topofmurrayhill
I put my recipe through soapcalc and the recipe with lard subbed for palm through the calculator and they are almost the same. The qualities numbers in SoapCalc aren't very useful for assessing an oil substitution. The numbers below the soap qualities are the ones that tell you how how similar the results are likely to be. In this case, they suggest that a direct substitution can make a significantly different soap, which is true. That's not to say that you shouldn't try lard. It's just that the results will change more than the soap qualities indicate, depending on what percentage of the recipe it is. I think that lard is inherently somewhat better balanced than palm oil, so it could be an improvement.
