Therliana Posted March 12, 2008 Share Posted March 12, 2008 Hi Guys,I'm only new to the forums, I've been hunting the internet for weeks looking for natural products for my new puppy (soaps, shampoo, flea powders, Paw Balms, Nose Butters etc.) without very much success. I cook all her food and biscuits myself and would also like to make all her grooming products myself too if i can.I've dabbled in soap making and B&B products in the past (and daydreamed of the day i'd make my first candle) for a quite a while and when I couldn't find any "spa" recipes for my pup decided to look here in the hope someone may have had the same idea as me for their pets, although my husband thinks im the only "nutter" in the world for wanting to pamper my pooch. I've googled "paw balm" and have been able to get an ingredient list for that but im not sure if i need to add a specific amount of each ingredient.I've got a rough idea of what EO's and FO's to use for her, but i do intend to still show her vet anything that i may use on her before i do use it.We don't have any professionals in the area that could give her a spa treatment just a groomer that bath's and clips dogs, otherwise i'd probably just pay to have her pampered but no luck there :undecided Anyone else have the same ideas or any advice on balms/soaps/sprays etc Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A dog's sense of smell is much better than ours so remember to use a light hand if you do add scent to anything or it could bother him/her. Many of the healing balm type recipes for people could probably be used on a dog as long as all the ingredients were safe. If you want to buy something already made I have seen some good dog soap listed on etsy.com but even there don't forget to check the ingredients. Dog's, especially pure breeds, seem to develop allergies very easy (due to the mass amount of overbreeding and improper breeding) so anything synthetic can trigger that. I don't know much about making grooming products, but I know dogs aren't really all that different than humans as far as what products you can use on them, especially all natural products. I would say find a good formula for an all natural soap or lotion for sensitive skin that you would make for a human and that would work just fine. But that is only MY experience I'd be extremely cautious with EOs as well. "Natural" does not always mean safe or gentle. And EOs and other "natural" ingredients can certainly trigger allergies - that's not just a syntetics thing. Also, what we know that IS safe and gentle for (most) humans isn't always for animals. For example, I've read lavender EO is toxic to cats. I'd wonder about EOs and dogs...And don't forget to preserve your "natural" products that contain water - lotions and such. Therliana Posted March 18, 2008 Author Share Posted March 18, 2008 Thanks guys for the replies sorry im so long getting back to you but with 4 kids it's hard to find a few minutes to jump back on here.As for the fragrance oils i don't intend to use any fragrance oils and i have been researching a fair bit on what EO's are safe for dog's and will confirm with my vet before using on her. As for cats I also know Tea Tree Oil is highly toxic to them aswell. I looked at a balm i had here for myself but it had cocoa Butter in it and as dogs shouldn't be fed chocolate i thought against using my balm on her paws (as a just in case measure considering i wasn't sure).Thanks for the web links i'll head off in a tick and check them out.As for do doggies even really need that stuff, well I'd normally say no, However it's more for myself then for her. We would like to one day breed her and having kids ourselves are fully aware that anyone who might take one of her future pups into their homes might also have kids, so we want her pampered like a princess to ensure (as much as we possibly can anyway) that she's a well looked after, brilliantly natured dog who will to the best of "our" ability have lovely natured pups for families. Having said that she's got a major problem with being seperated from me already, if she's away from me OR can see me but can't get to me she cries and sooks and like an idiot instead of having her cry and sook and wake our baby up i put a blanket on the end of my bed and let her sleep on that so she didn't wake bubs, however her paws are dry and the noise it makes on my doona is like dragging fingernails on a chalkboard and it grates on my nerves terribly so it's more for me to soften her pads on her paws then for her benefit, although it is of great benefit to dogs to have soft paws, however doggie booties would do the same. I just don't want to be dressing up my stocky looking staffy in shoes lol.Thanks heaps for all your replies i'll go through some of my recipes and see what i can find out and check with the vet soon. Dogs "need" that stuff as a way to "give back" to their parents by indulging us in those silly things we like to do to them...just like when we dress them up for the Holidays...they need that to make us feel better:laugh2: Therliana, I'm not sure how much pampering you want to do, but I make my dogs a simple Goat's Milk m&p soap w/ Neem, Vit E, & Emu. I never, ever use any fragrance, and I'm not comfy w/ EO's either.The whole ritual of bathing is what makes me think I'm actually pampering them...it's a 2 hr process LOL. There's a jacuzzi & snacks involved along w/ lots of massaging and hugs & kisses. For their paws, I use Shea Butter or EVCO b/c both are fine when they lick. Of course, they'd probably be perfectly happy if I just slathered Peanut Butter on them, but it's just too messy:p Have fun pampering your pooch!
