TartAddict
Probably a stupid question...but, you don't charge sales tax on a gift certificate, right? They haven't actually purchased anything. Thought I'd get the consensus Thanks!D
Jane42
I have never paid sales tax on a gift certificate/card that I have bought from a store.
candlelady
I believe the person who redeems the gift certificate/card will pay the sales taxes.Carrie

debscent
I'm so glad I live in a state without sales tax.
candlebean
I agree with everyone else - if you charged them tax on the gift certificate, then they'd have to pay tax on whatever they bought too, which would mean they are being double-taxed. At least that's how I look at it.
prairieannie
Hmmm... I've redeemed gift certificates many times before and never had to pay the sales tax. Are you sure it's not backwards? It's also possible that I wasn't paying a lick of attention and I really DID pay tax too LOL. I've been sitting her thinking about it. It really doesn't make sense that the one to purchase the gift certificate would pay the tax not knowing exactly what would be purchased with it. southern.scents
But, most of the time if you are using a certificate online, it will be in another state and they won't charge you tax on what you buy with the certificate nor on the certificate. If that makes any sense at all.
Jane42
Hmmm... I've redeemed gift certificates many times before and never had to pay the sales tax. Are you sure it's not backwards? When I buy a gift certificate, there is no tax. When I go to redeem them, in a store (not online), they tally up what I am purchasing - with tax included - then subtract the gift certificate.A gift certificate is just like cash.
