Downscale recipe size?

Recommended Posts

I am having a real moment here and no one is in the house to ask, but if I have a recipe say for a body lotion and i just want to make 1 sample size for me, say a 4oz, how do I downscale the size. This is probably total basic math, but its not sinking in right now.:embarasse

Not sure what you are actually asking but if I understand it right, you want to cut your recipe, correct?

Ok, if you normally make 24 ounce batches, you divide it

So lets say you have

8oz ABC product

4oz XYZ product

6oz of HTD product

6oz CPG product

Total 24 ounces, you want 4 ounces so divide 4 into 24, that answer is 6 so you want one sixth of the above products

divide 6 into 8oz (1.33oz), 6 into 4oz(.67oz) and 6 into 6oz (1oz).

That is how I do mine anyway.

Hope that made sense and was what you were asking

Ok, this recipe is cindym's for emulisified body butter, but i jsut want to make a 4oz jar. How do I scale it down? it looks like it makes 30oz and if I want to make just the 4oz wpuld I just divide everything by 7.5. I am making this way harder than need be,

15.6 ozs Water

1.5 ozs Steric

1.5 ozs E-wax

7.5 ozs Olive OIl

3 ozs Avacado Butter

.3 ozs Fo Black Raspberry Vanilla

.3 ozs Liquid Par Optima

.15 ozs Vit E

.15 ozs Dry Flo

If you're planning to make this lotion lots, you might find it worth the trouble to convert it to percentages (%). That way you can just multiply the basic % later with the amount you're planning to make.

For example, say

2 oz mango butter

1 oz shea butter

3 oz macadamia oil

2 oz jojoba oil

1 oz glycerin

1 oz beeswax

Total everything up to get 10 oz, then divide each ingredient by the total.

2 oz mango butter = 2/10 = 0.2 = 20%

1 oz shea butter = 1/10 = 0.1 = 10%

3 oz mac oil = 3/10 = 0.3 = 30%

Ingredient amt = % X (total)

Say you want to make 24 oz of body butter...

20% of mango butter = 0.2 X 24 = 4.8 oz

10% of shea butter = 0.1 X 24 = 2.4 oz

30% of mac oil = 0.3 X 24 = 7.2 oz

etc, etc.

..... Am I complicating things too much?
