Making your own mineral make-up. A good idea?

Hi everyone,

I have seen some sites selling "making your own mineral make up kit". Some as low as $45+shipping and as high as $215 + shipping. Since I have heard many fabulous reviews about mineral make up, I am tempted to get a starting kit to make my own but I still have some worries whether I can do this or not.

Has anyone tried making their own mineral make up?Is this something simple enough for beginners to try out?Any advice would be great. TIA :)

Making your own mineral makeup can be hard. I have a professional kit that I have attempted twice and once it didn't work and once it did. The hardest part is measuring. With this kit everything is an exact science. I had a very difficult time finding a scale that I could afford that measured in .000 grams. And the one that I did find is a balance and I am still not sure that I am able to measure correctly. Now this has just been my experience with the company that I bought from that I probably won't buy from again. I started to go with a company that was alot more expensive that already has the hard part done all you have to do is add the colored mica to make different shades; But at the last minute I went with another company in order to get more product at a cheaper price. Big mistake on my part because what I didn't know did hurt me in the end. I had no idea that you needed to measure on such a small light weight scale and if I were to try and find one that was digital and measured at a .000 range it could cost in upwards of 1,500 at the least. Now don't let me scare you off. You just really need to do your research and get yourself a resale tax id number. You can do it on the internet and check back in a day or so and have your number and then they will send you a paper copy in the mail. And it's free. I found that most reputable companies will not sell you their products unless you have this number. I know that it can be done and you can find kits that are very inexpensive like the one you mentioned for $45.00. But if you plan on selling it, that little kit could get you started but you more than likely will need to buy on a bigger scale to keep up with customer demand if you are selling on an auction place. I planned on customizing mineral makeup for my clients but as of right now I wouldn't dream of selling them what I have because it is jus too hard to do accuratly with out the proper scale. I have had to learn a tough and expensive lesson. But you don't have to if you do your home work and ask the right questions now that you have a little more information.

I hope this helped.

I agree with everything that was said above, but depending on how much time you are wiling to put into the learning process it can be learned. If you are just wanting something easy to make overnight, this isn't exactly a good place to start. As with many products it takes a lot of time, research and learning to make mineral makeup. And like stated above finding the exact measurements is to me the most difficult part, there are times that if you don't measure just right, it can mess up everything. Check out the link Robin gave you, it has a lot of helpful info. there.

Thank you so much for the advice. I looked at the Conservatoire website and it has a lot of wonderful resources. I think I am going to wait and do more research before I attempt to make this at home. It seems pretty challenging. Right now, I am still a beginner so I'll wait until I have more experience and more money to buy a super precise scale :D
