You just let them soak in grape kool-aid with half the amt. of water listed on the pkg.I tried it on some galvanized metal containers that I'd sanded first, and it worked pretty well. I'm guessing the citric acid affects the finish. I'm not sure if this is the look you're going for, but it's cheap to try. Hope this helps.
