TartAddict
Hi all!I'm making my first batch of tarts tonight. Does anyone know if the thermometer needs to actually be IN the wax while using a Presto Pot? I don't have enough wax in this batch for the thermometer (it's clipped on the side) to reach. Any ideas? Thanks!D
topofmurrayhill
Yes it has to be in the wax. You may have to tip the pot to get the thermometer in it and check the temp from time to time. Be careful.Or you could just take your own temperature while making tarts.Usually for amounts like that I just use the double boiler. TartAddict
Thank you I think I need a longer thermometer!
diamondk
If you have a piece of copper wire you could bend that at both ends. Attach one end to the thermometer and then have the other end bent so it would hang on the side of the pesto pot. I have some of these made up for both my presto pot and pouring pot using the double boiler method. I can take a pic if you need a visual of this. TartAddict
That's a great idea! I'll see if dh has some. I just had the thermometer clipped to the side (it registered 190 when the pot temp was set at 250). Now I'm wondering if the temp was hotter! Yikes! candlemakingkid
I am a clutz when it comes to glass thermometers. After breaking three in 5 months another chandler told me about the digital thermometer. I went to my local Bed, Bath and Beyond shop and bought a digital thermometer for under $20. This is also carried at Wal-Mart. I love mine. I always was concerned with my glass one being clipped to the side of the presto pot and how much additional heat came from the pot.The digital thermometer has a metal probe which you can insert directly into unmelted wax or whatever, and IMHO is much easier to work with. Plus, no glass for me to break Chris
