dgal
I'm just doing a little catching up on reading the posts and have a thought about double wicking versus single wicking. The thought occurred to me that some might presume that a double or triple wicked candle will burn faster than a single wicked candle so choose singles for the economy. Honestly, I haven't tested to see whether there is an appreciable difference or not. Has anyone tested the difference and willing to share results?Don Galaway
Beth-VT
In my experience, overall yes, doubles will burn hotter/faster than singles, but certainly not significantly more so. It's hard to find a singe wick that burns hot enough to reach a fmp in the large apoth's. It take s pretty large wick which will produces a higher burn rate in g's/hr. When double wicking, you've got to use 2 pretty small wicks so as not to overheat the jar, but hot enough to be able to maintain a good burn with the restricted air flow as you reach near the bottom. Depending on the chandlers choice of wax blends & wicks, you can get results varying from say 10% faster burn rate to 50% or more. There's no really conclusive answer cuz there's so many variables....it can go either way, and still produce a nice candle.
