Fairy_Light
My mom and I were discussing the new oil candles and she brought up a type of candle/oil thing back in the early 80's or so don't quote us on it... but she said you put a floating plastic wick holder in oil... and the wick would burn as long as the oil... it looked like a candy bowl or the fake crystal dishes in the hobby section. She said you stuck your wick through this clear plastic floaty thing. You lit the wick in the oil and it didn't burn the thing it floated around with but it burnt the oil kinda like a lanter would... we were wondering if these are still around and also if you could do that but use oil and fragrance it. Probably served to be a very dangerous type of burning a candle but still would be really neat to try and recreate it and figure out a way to make it safe or semi safe anyways lol ... defanitely wouldn't be for a home with children. Any input is greatly appreciated.. Thanks everyone for looking.HUGS
Sag_77
I can't remember what they were called but I know what you are referring to. I actually have some and you can still buy a type of them at Michaels, in Canada anyways. I found the ones I have on TSC here. My main use for them is on the dinner table during special occasions. You fill a wine glass (or any glass item that will hold liquid) half full of water and color it if desired then you add the oil. A basic cooking oil will do and if I want to add FO I mix it up in a measuring cup first then pour it in my glass. Then you float the disk with its wick in it and light it. The nice thing is you can put one per place setting or use something larger and make a big center piece. If the oil starts to get low you can just add more and if it runs out the water seems to extinguish it. As for the disk melting it has never happened to me but I normally only burn them for maximum of about 3 hours. (the time it take for a full dinner, Christmas or something like that) I assume if you were to burn them for an extended period of time they would get hot enough to melt. I have never had a safety issue with them, but I have a 2 year old and I am very cautious of where I put things.
mustang67
I also had some of those. I think you can still get them at BCN. Look on the main shopping menu.

RobinInOR
I used to use those at school! Worked OK, but the little floaty things got really gross - oily stuck on grease yucky
meshman
I actually bought a package of these not long ago. They are kind of unique, but as mentioned, can be somewhat messy.
Fairy_Light
www ya I hadn't thought about that... hmmm that might be why they weren't so popular... unless they are cheap enough to use them as disposable one lol
