Old Crab
Has anyone mixed 4794 with 4630 or with 4627 for containers?I've been playing with my sisters combo (see previous post) and its nice but I think the 4794 would have a better throw than 4786. HorseScentS
Cajun makes their candles with a blend of 60% 4794 and 40% 4633. But if I'm not imagining things, I could have sworn their instructions used to say 4630 instead of 4633, so maybe they've switched to 4633 lately? 4633 is a one pour container blend like 4630. But, anyway they say the mix gives an exquisite HT: http://www.cajuncandles.com/container-candle-making-guide.html Edited February 27, 2013 by HorsescentS
Old Crab
Ill have to check that. Last time I looked it was 4786 & 4630.

I'm sure they said 4630 too. I wonder why they switched? I never see anyone here posting about 4633. simply fragrant
Since 4794 is formulated for votive candles, would it adher to the container? Also, the recommendations for f/o are 3-6% (info from Peak). Perhaps the 4627 would overcome those problems though... I have combined 4794 and 4627 for melts with good success. HorseScentS
Oh, geez! I got totally confused by the numbers, so ignore my link to Cajun's instructions. They use 4786, not 4794. duh!
Old Crab
Their website does say 4786 & 4633 with a 60/40 ratio. On IGI's website, the 4786 & 4633 have a similar description, including vibrant colors. So maybe they are closer in makeup than the 4630. Anyway, I'm interested in the 4794 not the 4786. The reason is that I use to use straight 4794 wax for tarts, till I got the clam shells. I wanted to soften the wax a touch to make it easier to pop out of the clams. So I did a mix of 4794 & 4630 at a 75/25 ratio. They pop out nicely and when compared to the straight 4794 seem to have a better hot scent throw & last longer. Intrigued, I set out to make clams with the same ratio but with 4786 & 4630. My thought was container wax both ways gots to be better. They do remove from clams as easy as the other mix - but - they do not throw as well. So - I am wondering about making some containers with 4794 & 4630 and another with 4794 & 4627. What I should do is just buy some 2281 or another similar base / scale wax and make my own blend instead of trying to create one with two other blends.Truth be told, I love the scent throw of my 4627 but I am getting tired of it and I want to change to a harder wax that will sneer at fingers being pressed on it. I have combined 4794 and 4627 for melts with good success.Truly, I am unaware of what the true FO load is for 4794. I have used anywhere from 3% clear up to 9% with no issues of seepage, bleed, greasiness, etc. Since it is formulated for votives - which is just a container candle needing a jar is what made me think of it. 4794 is "preprogrammed" to melt fast for a quick melt pool. Right?
simply fragrant
Hi OC, I found this link regarding using 4794 for containers, and it also says a much higher f/o load is possible. if you do test this mixture, I would love to hear your thoughts!http://cart.candlesupply.com/product.php?productid=18549&cat=400&page=
Ravens
Yep, that's what Mike at Cajun Candle confirmed; they use 4786 and 4633; I've tried it and will say that it's a very good formula Ooops, forgot... they use zinc wicks with that blend. Did Cajun's ever use 4630 in their blend, or am I trippin'?
Ravens
HorsescentS, in all honesty I cannot say. I've been a Cajun Cande customers for many years, and do not recall their using 4630, but it's always possible that at one time they did. IdkI guess 4633 used to be known as Astrolite J-223. Old Crab
Maybe we will get lucky and Blacktie Affair will chime in.I know that they use (or use to) 4794 for everything, including container candles.I did try, once upon a time, to use 4794 in containers with no blending. It did pull away from the jars, which helped with the look, not much of a rattle noise. The problem I had was finding a wick for it.I absolutely loathe zinc wicks. They do work, but i just don't care for them....I went ahead and poured some jelly jars tonight with the 4794+4630 & the 4794+4627.I kept them at a 60/40 and 6% FO load for the moment.I know how the 4630 & 4627 burns straight, so it will be interesting to see how they turn out.Shame I have to wait a week to test.... I miss BTA too, and she did use alot of 4794. That was what I wondered about, it the wax would rattle in the jar, good to hear that it wasn't bad, but with a blend it probably won't even be an issue....oooh a week is SO long to wait!! Will look forward to your results.
Old Crab
Well, not quite a week but close enough for me. Visibly there are wet spots, and due to the mixture the wax does not "pop" away from the glass wall like it would if it was straight 4794. Touch / fingertip the wax felt fairly solid, no fingerprint like if it would be straight 4630 / 4627. I used CD wicks (7 & 8), since that is what I like with the softer waxes. I burned the jelly jars for 3 hours, nice burns actually. They did not reach the glass though. I have noticed when burning 4786/4630 combination the wax takes on a really funky texture. Imagine staring straight down at the wick looking at the melt pool. The wax looks like it has a wormy, grainy, brainy appearance. The 4794/4630 & the 4794/4627 wax did not have this appearance. I will continue to burn to see how it does, if it catches up on the jar, etc. As for hot throw I have my wife test for that at work, my nose is pretty much dead by now. LolI do wonder what a 4794/4627 50/50 mix with 10% FO would be like - if it could burn cleanly. I personally keep most candles between 4-6% but I am curious. simply fragrant
I have read that many use an htp wick in 4627, which is supposed to handle the higher fragrance loads. Wonder if it would work in a 50 50 blend with the 10% load? Did the melt pool ever catch up to the side of the jars with the cd's? Would a 10 be too big? They are ok. I've been using CD wicks going on 8 years now so my judgement is a bit colored there. LolI did another pour today with a different blend % and 6% FO and same blend but 9% just for kicks. The cd10 should get it, so I set up cd6 to cd12 just in case. I'm surprised the cd8 didn't do it, but then I have a friend that does 6006 with cd12 in this jar. simply fragrant
Yes, CDs are a nice wick. I have tried zincs in a variety of paraffin blends, with different fragrance loads, but they always seem to mushroom so quickly, but have been told that is the nature of that wick, I kept thinking I had too much fo! Let us know if the 10 works, I happen to have those two waxes , but never thought about blending the two until you mentioned it!!
