  1. When I first got in to paraffin, I tried a chisel and hammer. Didn't work. Now I take the hammer from up above my head and whack the wax on the cement floor. Usually one or two swings breaks it up. And I don't have a very strong upper body. I tried on the work bench but that took too much hammering. HTH!
  2. I can't tell you how much I love taking the hammer and wacking the crap out of a slab of wax. It is one of the best parts of candle making. Hhhmmm, I think I'll go make some candles. lol
  3. You guys are hillarious. I read the replies to hubby. We both laughed but he said hey, classiccandle supported me! And annie, totally, he is soooo not allowed to extinguish a candle again. Seriously. I think he was thinking "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your.... candle down." !!!!! too funny!!!!
  4. When blowing out a candle, don't blow with all your might. Wax went everywhere. He didn't even realize he did it. I came out of the bathroom and there was wax all over my dresser, the wall, the mirror on the wall. Thank goodness for heat guns.
  5. I use color and love mixing colors to get the right candle. But then again I'm not a soy person and like parafin (don't hate me).
  6. lol, love them! The beer one is great!!!
  7. This is a link that is in the newbie area. I think you'll find it helpful: http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Discussions;action=display;num=1112822236 Also just keep experimenting. You're going to waste a bit of wax before you get your method right. Candle making isn't like baking where you follow a recipe and voila. It's more like the art of cooking.
  8. Wow, everything looks so amazing. Love those pillars!
  9. Agree, I only order from CandleScience and Peak. I prefer Peak's packaging but both have great products. What temp are you blending your FOs at and in what type of wax? And what percentage of FO per wax weight?
  10. Just got my new gift bags yesterday and labled them up. And had to throw in a picture of last weeks batch of tilted layered.
  11. It was the equivilant of having a girls night out and the wine is in the mail and all you have is boone's farm. lol
  12. We live in an old house and had some remodeling done last year. The inspector made us put in some fancy smoke/heat detector system that has all the detectors linked. I spilled a bit of wax on my hot plate last night and ran it to the next room while the smoke dissapated. Thing is so sensitive. There is no visible smoke with the heat gun.
  13. Just my $0.02. When I go to craft fairs, I hate the tents that the person is looking at me and no one else is in their tent. It's creepy. I love the ones where they are doing something. Also if a tent is too perfect, I think $$$$ and sometimes pass it by. Put your marketing hat on and think what would make you want to go into a tent. And what is your "thing." Romance, vintage, rustic, etc. Actually was going to give some examples but let me ask, what is your theme of your company?
  14. I swear anything for candle making at hobby lobby is junk. I was in a pinch one time and bought this ridiculous set of dyes only for the purple, even the entire bottle barely colored a pound of wax. Then I ran out of stearic and bought theirs to get me by, my candles when they got to 150, which is where I pour, the wax had all these wierd bubbles and had semi-solid... bits. Ugh.
