  1. OOB thier FO's smell pretty strong. I've tested the 3 below all with good results in 4627.

    Cool Citrus Basil

    Midnight Pomegranate

    Apple Jack & Peel

I've tested the following in Ecosoya PB mix with C1 (For Tarts) with great results.

    Passionate Kisses

    Pina Colada

    Monkey Farts

  2. These are a popular jar, carried a LOT of places... where are you located? Best idea is to search the suppliers nearest you so that shipping won't be too bad...

I'm located in IL. South East of Chicago or NW Indiana. I not even sure what to do a search for on google. I've tried several things but mostly pull up auto glass or plastic bottle companies. I'm sure i'm not searching for the correct things. When I search for the libbey number I don't get local results.

  3. I do agree, and I should have tested them first before sending them out. I knew someone was going to spank me for that. LOL

I was just trying to get some prospective on what a customer would think. I've made over 50 testers and so far only 3 stand out. I'm going to be changing some things and doing some more testing. Burning a tester I made last night.

  4. I've been doing a lot of reading and testing these last 6 months and finally put out some testers to family to get feedback. I made some jars, tarts, votive, smelly Jellies, & Pillars. I need advice on everything of course but I’ll start with the jars first. ;)

I sent a survey and I asked if they were strong, fair, faint, none. All came back in the fair to faint. Everyone that came back also said I needed to add more fragrance to the candles.

To them it seems that I didn't add enough but I’m sure it must be something with the wick or my process. Maybe too much FO is burning off because I’m adding the FO in the wax at 195 and mixing with a stick blender and pouring at 180, or maybe the wick is too hot and burning it off. My tarts did very well with the FO's in EcoSoya PB so I doubt its bad FO's that are causing the problem. (Although i'll take advice on that as well.)

I did not test these before sending them out because I only have sample size FO's. In most of my other candles I have made them with the Eco's because was recommended by CS wick guide. I am getting more soot buildup on the jar than I would like though. I noticed most people here suggests the HTP wicks with the wax so i'm going to try that direction as well. I do appreciate your responses.

    Wax: 4627

    Jar: 2.6" Diameter

    FO load: 10%

    Poured: 180 Degrees

    Wick: Eco-6

Candle Makers Store - Black raspberry Vanilla

    Wellington - Coco-Mango

    Cajun - Mulberry Madness

    BC - Hawaiian Paradise

BC - Sex on the Beach

    CandleWic - Strawberry & Champagne

  5. Sliver and Candybee,

I wanted to tell you thanks for all the help you've given me these past months. I've been doing a lot of reading and testing and finally put out some testers to family to get feedback. I made some jars, tarts, votives, smelly Jellies, & Pillars. I want your advise on everything of course but I’ll start with the jars first. I hope you don't mind. ;)

  6. It takes color pretty good. Its a little pastel IMO. I mix it with with a lower MP wax at a ratio of 70 / 30. 70% PB and 30% being what ever i have the most of at the time... (464, C-1... etc.)

Cracking: I'm assuming you mean in the 6 or 8 cube tart mold. If you fill it up to the top, I haven't had a problem with cracking. However if you skimp a bit and only fill just past the dividers, it will crack when you try to close the lid.

If you plan to use PB by itself, its pretty hard, with a good CT. If your making anything over an 1" thick with straight PB you won't have an issue with cracking.

So why do I mix it if it does OK alone. I think its just too hard for my taste, so i mix it.

  7. I must say that I am presently surprised by the apple jack and orange peel in the ecosoya CBA.. It smells great and looks great!! I will be ordering more of this.. I am still not impressed by their Patch.. And for the price it is not worth it in my opinion.. The Eucalyptus Spearmint is much better.. Another one that smells much better in the wax is the Tahitian Vanilla.. Smells like a french vanilla dunkin donuts cofee.. Interesting smell

How did the others turn out. I noticed you stated that they are not worth the price. Who has a better product in your opinion with price not being a factor.

  8. At the risk of hijacking this thread, dsipp you can not, not, NOT sell straight FO in a bottle to be used for perfume. It has GOT to be mixed with a carrier oil. You also need to make sure the FO you are using is skin safe. Since I'm assuming you just do candles right now, some of the FO's you use might not be skin safe. The supplier should inform you as to whether it's skin safe or not. You also need to follow the guidelines as to how much is skin safe. But to answer your question as to how to make a roller ball perfume, I use FCO as my carrier oil. Depending on the skin safe % of the FO I have gone up to 24% FO/ 75% FCO. I've also used jojoba oil as the carrier, but the price of jojoba has totally made it not worth the cost. Cyclo also can be used as a carrier oil for a perfume, but personally I prefer the oil.. HTH!

    Lauran,

Thank you for your response. You are correct, I only make candles right now. The reason I asked is because I believe most FO suppliers dilute the FO some. Some places you can get Ultra concentrated, or a higher grade of FO from the stardard. This lead me to believe that they must be diluting it a bit. I read that DPG can be used as a carrier oil but i thought that was what you put in the reed diffusers. Where can I purchase the FCO.

  9. I don't blame you! We actually sell roll-on perfume in 1/3 oz. roller bottles, but we don't use a "wrap" around label so I couldn't help you there. My NEXT "test" if I were you would be to "create a label" on your computer to the size you think it would be....like let's say 2.1" x 2.1" OR 2.1"L x 1.9" high....print it out, cut it to size, wrap it around and see what you've got.

Are you printing your own labels or are you ordering them printed? (You may have to "cut your own label" if you're printing them yourself which means you'd kind of have to go through some of this "trial and error" regardless......make sense?

    Rach,

I've been wanting to do this along with my candles. Do you just bottle the FO or is there an additive i should be adding to it? So funny, my husband and I were just talking about this last night.

  10. Its true a larger diameter with a larger melt pool generally will have a stronger throw. I say generally because not all candle jars have a 4" diameter or necessarily have a full melt pool nor does a full melt pool always equate to having hot throw. You can still have a full melt pool with little to no hot throw. As always there are many factors that will determine your hot throw.

What might make you have poor hot throw and a full melt pool?

    Is there an "approximate" area a certain diameter should fill? (i.e. 2.5" D - 150sqft fill; 3" D - 300sqft fill; 3.5" D 400sqft)

Should there be a certain amount of time when we should expect to begin to measure the strength of throw from our candles. (i.e.. 3" diam after the 4th hour, or after the 2nd burn cycle, or immediately.)

  11. Burned another tester today and I wasn't pleased with the throw. I could smell it just a little after i got out the shower. It had been burning for about an hour. No noticable difference after the 4hr burn mark. I know i need to wick up because I didn't get a full melt pool. Burn pool was 2.5" after 4hrs.

My mom came over right after i put it out and she didn't mention the smell or the candle.

Apple Jack n Peel from Lonestar - Double HTP83 Wicks - 3.5" Square Container - Cranberry Dye Chip - 12oz wax - 12% FO load. Curred 2 days.

How much of an impact will that have on throw?

What are your suggestions for testing and measuring for FO throw?

I'm looking to make a candle that has the FO throw strong like AirFreshner, or Axe (Spray Deoderant). My glade plugin (the oil kind) smells stronger.

    Thanks for your help.

  12. Thanks everyone for you kind remarks. @ Georgia and Bruce--I struggled with the size for a while and that has actually since been fixed. The new labels now say 7oz net wt. I just need to get some updated pics taken. Crazzie I get the labels from Online labels.com Again thanks everyone I am excited...and nervous at the same time, but mostly excited. Now back to work getting stuff stocked for the open house!!!:yay:

What size labels did you use. They look great btw.

  13. dsipp138, for some reason it wont let me send you a private message. Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I too am in Joliet:yay:

I have been into candle making off and on for a couple of years and hope to start selling sometime this summer.

If you ever want to compare notes or we could even combine orders to save on shipping etc, just let me know.

Yes, Anytime. I'm actually in South Holland (45min east), so that would be great. I'm looking for a good container place at the moment. I don't think all the features are active on my account. I just started about 4 weeks ago. Started in Soy and quickly found that I can't acheive as much HT with it. I'm not having much luck with the IGI4627 either.

  14. What % FO are you using? Are you using a digital scale? Are you coloriong your candles?

    Silver,

Thanks for your reply's on both boards. I really need the help. I'm taking your advice and will let them cure for another couple of days before burning them again. I am using colors with candles. So far i've been using a 10% FO load, with a digital scale that I measure by weight. I'm looking to go into business and i'm not sure if i'm going to offer colors. I have liquid dye so my results can be reproduced if need be.

    Do you use the 4627?

What temp do you add your FO?

How hot do you heat the wax before you add your FO?

    What temp do you pour?

    I've used the following scents

    LoneStar Blueberry cobbler

    NCCS Warm Vanilla Sugar

    CS Wildberry Mouse

    CS Beach Linen

    DPS Moonlight Path

    DPS Mango

    DPS Blackberry Vanilla

    LoneStar Pound Cake

  15. why are you using vybar?

I read somewhere that Vybar helped with the FO throw. I'm still new to this so please excuse my ignorance.

I'm testing the candles in a closed 16x10 bedroom, every 15 mins for Throw. The throw after about 2 hrs of burning would be described as a little bit stronger than a used dryer sheet, but not as strong as an unused dryer sheet. I'd expect to open the door and cough. Your help is appreciated.
