  1. Scented, Thanks so much for that constructive critique. I test burned that one and can see that it is not safe. Much appreciated. Will refrain from making those again. Angie, thanks also for the comments. Watermelon and cucumber FO for the melon candles. I'll try the tip about the star mold. Came without instructions (lol)......
  2. Some pics of new candles I've made during the holidays. Paraffin wax with metal molds. Used azaleas and ferns that grow here for embeds.
  3. pleasureridgecandles: Thanks for the comments. The water candle one is my favorite also. leisa2003: The insides of the coconuts are naturally white but, you cannot use them like that as they will deteriorate with time. I removed all the coconut fruit, cleaned thoroughly, let dry and then added white colored, scented paraffin half way. Then I rotated the coconut to get the wax to stick to the sides. This was done many times until I got that look. After it cools I finished the wax pouring process. The shells had no cracks to seal.......although on some one hole always appears on the bottom, that was sealed with wax. Candybee: The husk really add to the look on these. I have a friend who has a band saw and he kindly offered to cut them for me and cut the bottoms level so they stayed still. He charged me 1 candle for his services. Although I like those level cuts, I really prefer the water candle one because I scored it around the center with a hand saw and then with a hammer gently tapped around it till it broke in 2 pieces with some jagged edges. One thing about the husks: I brushed them lightly with the FO for added throw.... Another benefit is that these candles float in water, adding a lot of effect for a special occasion. lovemylabs: Thanks for looking and the comments.....TJ
  4. I have several coconut palms on my land and decided to use them to make these candles. Paraffin wax with Pina Colada FO. Coconut chunks made from wax. Tried one using water candle technique. The one with frogs was done for a test burn...........
  5. Thanks for looking and comments! I've tried to incorporate my knowledge as a painter ( acrylics on canvas ) into candle making. Selection of colors, design and now, new tools, aroma and wax. Fake food candles are selling very well for me. The water candles have an amazing cold throw to them. Currently working on coconut candles since I have 6 coconut palms on my land and they always have coconuts falling on the ground to use as candle containers, will post pics soon. I want to thank all the artists here for the inspiration and helpful advice.
  6. Slice of cake, paraffin wax mixed with soy, strawberry FO and topped with gel and white wax for coconut shavings. 2nd one is first attempt at a water candle. Awareness FO, paraffin wax.
  7. Kitn, thanks for looking Soy.......a million thanks for that info. Very helpful and I have an Auto Zone close by. Safety is a prime concern for me. If i can turn one of my fake food candles upside down and it doesn't fall off the plate I will be happy....unlit of course.......lol.......... Agree about not reusing glassware. My marketing strategy is based on selling to fine restaurants and the candles as center pieces on the tables....with a fine aroma and unlit for quite awhile.........already have a couple of clients with my candles on their tables so safety and strong adhesive on plate was a big concern,,,thanks...........TJ
  8. Thanks all for the comments. Did a test burn on one. 1/2 hour burn time. Smells great................this one is not on the original pic, making a bunch of these for X-mas. Does silicon work well for attaching candles to plates? I have a safety concern about this........
  9. Fake food, love it. Soy candles using a bakery metal mold then adding a crystal made from gel in a ice cube tray I found that works great. Wicking after they are molded using a heated bamboo shish kabob stick for the wick in the soy and gel crystal. Heavy red coloring with gel for frosting effect. Strawberry FO. Had some trouble getting this to stick to the plate with a hot glue gun. Any ideas for firmer adhesion to plate would be appreciated. Thanks......and thanks for the comments....I haven't got around to reply to the other posts I have here. I appreciate the comments and input............so I'll just say that on this post to avoid bumping up previous candle artworks.................TJ
  10. Thanks Vicky, never even realized there was such a thing as forever candles. New to candle making but, been an artist for a long time and applying what I know about that and photography to my candle making experience here. I'm excited by all I see here and the fine chandlers and their artwork. Your advice is well taken.....thanx
  11. HD Gel, Strawberry FO, blue glass embeds on bottom and gel ice cubes on top. Decorated with some tan twine I got at the candle store.
  12. Working on seascape gel candles in a wide format. Using HD gel. I found some real small starfish to use. I worked up the inner artwork and placed the starfish. When I poured the gel it started to fizz like an Alka-Seltzer...................should I stay away from this embed or can I clean it, thinking the salt in it caused the fizz?.........I placed it far away from the wick, I know they can burn..........any suggestions................Thanx.......TJ
  13. Had a wooden plate that held a metal dish when serving sizzling foods. Had an indent I saw interesting. Sea ferns have been lying around for years so I got to mixing things around till I got this. Paraffin wax, Lavender FO in candle and Pina Colada FO in the blue water.
  14. Thanks for the comments Angie, the mold used was pretty strong and held up very well, an added bonus was that the inside was waxed, not by me, just came like that. Gotta find more of those......... Mommyof4: Thanks also for looking and comments..........
  15. I knew what I wanted to make when I first got involved as a chandler. Before I melted my first wax I wanted a lot of different embeds handy to get creative and find molds that were free. This one was done with a round cardboard case for " Cardenal Mendoza ", a liquor. It had a metal top that I used for the bottom of the candle which was beveled and when released gave a great shine to the bottom and made it appear to be floating a bit off the table. 3 pours and colors with glass embeds and blue aquarium gravel on the bottom. Heavy lavender FO. Soy wax. Comments and critiques helpful, thanks..........TJ
  16. Thanks dnj..........glad to have found this forum and make new friends. Anjie, thanks for the comments. The wick was mushrooming a lot on that pic, 1 hour burn time. I'm real new to candle making and learning a lot here. I am intrigued and delighted at the creative possibilities involved in candle making. Hope to incorporate my other art, painting and photography into this new venture.................thanks for " trimming the wick" tip, much appreciated.
  17. Hello, I'm new here. Just been working making candles for a month now. Hook on gel candles. This one is from soy. I guess there's something traditionally ancestral just to see that flame.........and the scents available now are so varied. Im hooked................TJ
  18. Hello, my name is Tony. I've been smitten with the candle bug. Want to create seascapes with gel candles. I've painted lots of acrylics seascapes on canvas and want to try my hand at making aquariums, seascapes with gel candles. I want to create the wave effect on water. Any information would be grateful. I've perused the sponsors and found a lot of great information. One question I have is: Can I make a small aquarium ( 4"x8" ) of glass to use as the vessel for the candle? Would it be safe? Can I find that kind of container from some company? Thanks..
