  1. I notices when I read the recipes some say SAO and some say AO, but in both cases a fair amount is listed, so can't be the essential oil. I actyally bought a bottle of oil that said "Almond Oil", it was sitting with other cooking oils.
  2. is sweet almond oil and almond oil the same thing?
  3. So does lavender water deal just give light scent to the items you are drying, or does it actually reduce static, or do something else?
  4. This is what I have been using so far (and for bar soap I was using Fels Naptha soap, but want to try it with my owns soap, which might be lard soap): Hot water 1/2 cup Washing Soda 1/2 cup Borax 1/3 bar Soap (grated) In a large pot, heat 3 pints of water. Add the grated bar soap and stir until melted. Then add the washing soda and borax. Stir until powder is dissolved, then remove from heat. In a 2 gallon clean pail, pour 1 quart of hot water and add the heated soap mixture. Top pail with cold water and stir well. Use 1/2 cup per load, stirring soap before each use (will gel).
  5. Thanks, I'll check them out (as soon as kids go to bed )
  6. here's the recipe 1/8 tsp borax powder 1/2 cup distilled water 1/2 cup sunflower oil 1/2 tablespoon grated beeswax so I am not sure if borax is emulsifier in this case? It did come out opaque white like a lotion, but very thin consistency.
  7. I tried serching library catalog, and didn't find anything. Can anyone suggest a good book on lotion making, I want to make my own, and I want it to be natural as much as possible.
  8. It kind of sounds interesting, maybe I'll experiment with a few ounces of my lotion and add corn starch. Just not sure if I can just add a spoon-full and mix, or I need to warm up the mixture....?
  9. I have made my very first lotions. Since I was so impatiend to make it, I found a recipe that did not call for e-wax or stearic acid (since I don't have those things on hand). It came out quite liquidy, and the recipe said "light lotion", so I assume it is supposed to come out thin. But is there a way to thicken it? I remember reading somewhere a recipe that used corn starch in a lotion. Should I try adding some corn starch? Better ideas?
  10. I have a brick of Yaley beeswax. On the package it says, "100% natural and free of impurities." Later it says, "...provides bright flame...", which made me believe this was meant for candle making. So I called up the company and asked if I could use it in lip balms or lotions, and the customer service said, "No it's not cosmetic grade. The beeswax needs to be purified to be a cosmetic grade." But their packaging does say "fee of impurities". So can I use it for lip balms and lotions?
  11. By liqid soap do you mean using KOH, or grating and dissolving the soap in water?
  12. Want to make my own laundry soap, but not sure what is the most effective oil/fat (or combination) to use.
  13. I'd like to know too. I just looked at MP soap I bought from Michael's, and it says, "Pure glycerin soap... blah blah blah...", but never lists the ingredients. This soap is actually white and opaque, so there are more ingredients then just glyceryn. Maybe the clear soap is all glycerin.
  14. Libaray doesn't have it, Border's doesn't have it... I found it on Amazon for 40 bucks (plus shipping), I guess it will go on my wish list for now. But if you are ever up for it, can you post some pointers that you think are important to know?
  15. Thank you! I do need detail explanation, so this is perfect. I do have one lavander plant in my garden, but it's still so tiny. I hope it grows by fall, so I can put it to some good use.
  16. I want to infuse some olive oil with mint (from my garden). Do I need to wash the mint first, or just pick and put it in the oil? Also, are some oils better for infusing then others?
  17. Are you trying a different proportions of oils, or adding something that's supposed to make it harder?
  18. I remember seing a thread on it, but can't find it now. Somebody suggested to just cut up the trim board, and that's what I wanted to do. I am just not sure what type of wood should I use, and does it have to get varnished (or water sealed in any way), or can it just be used plain?
  19. How alkaline does the soap have to be to actually zap your toung?
  20. Air at the moment, but I really want to try the swirls.
  21. I was too thinking that the test strips would not be a good test. My understanding is you have to wet the soap to make the strip react. But what is the ph of your water? If it's tap, it's either neutral or slightly alkaline. Reverse osmosis and distilled water tend to be more acidic, and so are a lot of bottled waters. I was wondering about the ph testing too, so thanks for posting the question! (I'll go check out the link now)
  22. Thanks! As soon as I think I got it all figured out, something turns up to mess with me
