There's a huge variation in 'throw' between scents, I've found. I get mine from gelluminations, and must say that the blackberry, mulberry, smores, and cinnamon stick all will fill a good sized bar with one candle burning. Some scents just don't cast scent well at all, like their cherry for example. I rely on customer feedback since it's impossible for me to test this, living in a candle factory and all. I'm ordering a lot of 4 ounce bottles of scents I've never made before to make some small batches for my people to try, and strength of the scent will be a large factor to test.

I use those heavy 'meat cutting' scissors - with the black plastic and red circle on the hinge. I try to chop up half of each 50 pound box into little chunks that can be tossed into the coffee pots I use for melting. Heavier scissors make for easier chopping. Just got a pair of serrated scissors which make jagged edges on paper. Would probably work well since the scissors weigh about a pound, but I use them for clipping wicks and don't want to cross-purposes.

Don't forget that after you add your scenting oil your volume of gel will go up about 5% So one ounce per pound added to 50 pounds/800 ounces of gel will produce 850 ounces or 53 pounds of scented gel. Gel is also more dense than (most) wax, which is why wax that melts from pouring gel that is too hot will float to the top of the gel. So a pound of gel will fill fewer containers than a pound of wax.

Have been ordering from Gelluminations for about 5 years. My last 3 orders (gel, fragrance in different sizes) took 6-9 days to ship, whereas they had shipped orders in 1-2 days previously. Maybe it's because I've been placing bigger, more complicated orders, but it's really uncalled for. Bad customer service that could be improved by either: -Shipping each box as they get them filled, versus waiting for the entire order to be assembled -Noticing that I am a frequent customer, and will gladly wait for back-ordered items to ship with my next order so they don't have to pay additional shipping for say 1 bottle of vanilla bean oil -Calling/emailing me and explaining what is going on Lesson learned: don't order from gelluminations if you are in a hurry, or else place separate orders for your gel/wax and anything else you need.
