  1. I think most here can appreciate your excitement for this and eagerness to sell. Its very contagious and addicting. But regardless of whether you've done this before but not on as large of a scale, the fact that you are using different waxes will still require extensive testing under all scenarios with all jar, wax, color, wick and scent combos that you plan on selling. No matter how long you've done this, when you change wax, wicks and jars, you must thoroughly test. Experience will not alleviate the need and responsibility to do this. Please make sure that you are absolutely sure that your testing has been thorough and you've done everything you can do to make sure you are making and selling a safe product. I just don't think that 2 months is enough time.

    Meridith,

Thank you for your input. We will take your advice and not put the soy candles out, as they are the candles we are really new at. We will do alot more testing with it. And as just a small note, the party that my wife is having is just family and some co-workers. We arent trying to become the next Yankee candle. Thanks again for your input

  2. No ok let me clarify some things here. One my wife has been making candles for 2 years for herself and family. We are new to candle making on a larger scale and at using different waxes. That is why I am asking questions here on this forum, so we can learn from people like yourselves that have done this for much longer.

And Carrie We are NOT doing this as a get rich quick thing. We do take this seriously. I admit we have not done test burns on EVERY combination, but we've burned more than one candle in each jar, and pillar.

I guess I'm at fault for not clarifying more about how long she's been at this, We are new to this compared to alot of you here.

  3. OK, if no one else is going to jump in here, it might as well be me.

You are brand new to candle making, on December 6th you posted you were new and asked about soy wax. Here it is, two months later and you have an entire line of at least 5 different jars in several different colors and combinations of colors.

I just have to ask. Have you thoroughly tested every jar in every scent and color combo? Do you have your insurance lined up yet?

    carrie,

We've done some test burns and been very happy with the results. Also people that have bought candles have loved them. They've all said they are better than anything you could buy in a store. So it's a work in progress still.

  4. I know 'yall love us newbies asking questions out the waazoo,:laugh2: So I wont dispoint with mine. HI everyone! Have a wax question. My wife and I are looking to get some Pillar wax:whoohoo: . The place has 3 different waxes they say is for Votives, Pillars, and Small Containers. they have different melt points there's 125 melt point, 130 melt point, and 140 melt point. My question.....(wait for it..........) which one would be the best for Pillar molds.

This is the only info I have on the wax, the website doesnt have manufacturer, the MSDS sheet that goes along with each (which is the same sheet) says nothing about pillars just containers and Mottling. Does the melt point have to do with the amount of shrinkage in the wax? dont want the candle getting stuck in the mold because it wont shrink away from the sides. Any help will be really appreciated.

    Shane

  5. hey all, my wife and I are new to the candle making world. We have just been making pillars and jar candles and a few votive. But we are reading about these "tarts, melts, warmers and burners". can someone explain what each of these is, and where we can see some pics of each. Thanks

  6. I'm curious... is this how they were pictured in the auction? Again, if the molds arrived with a lotta buildup on them, and the photos didn't look like that, I sure would leave feedback for the seller.

BUT this does turn out okay for you because you got discounted molds that do clean up easily! :yay:

Suprisingly, yes the pic that I Posted with this thread is the pic off of ebay, Yes the one they used to sell these molds. I clean the molds as soon as I get them. And I agree The molds pictured I picked up all of them for $30.00 including shiping. so far all the molds we've bought have been in really good shape, not dents, dings, or rust. I've attached pics of 2 ebay auctions that we bought. again these are the pics from the ebay ad. Thanks for the input Stella

  7. Are these metal molds, plastic or latex/silicone? Metal molds are easy to maintain - put 'em in the oven and let the wax melt off, wipe clean and voila! Latex/silicon molds are a little dicier to keep clean, especially if they are detailed, and easy to damage. Plastic is more difficult than is metal but much easier than latex/silicone molds.

Many busy candlemakers do not pay a lot of attention to the exterior of their molds because that isn't the part that needs maintenance the most. Since you obviously are buying these molds used at a discount, the sellers do not feel obligated to clean them. If you have a gripe about it, leave feedback on eBay. If you want the molds to be like new, buy new ones. :)

Stella, these are metal molds. I'm not griping, just wondering if this is caused by overflow, or if they might be using a cold water bath and there is wax in the water. Just a simple question from curiosity.
  8. Hello everyone. I've just been sitting in the shadows reading away, but I've come up with a question that hopfully someone can answer. My wife and I have purchaced about 15-18 molds now on ebay. We have gotten them from various people, but one thing is common with all the molds. While the mold itself is in good shape the outsides of the molds are caked, or plastered with wax build up. We havent had this with our molds. the stay fairly clean on the outside. We also wonder why people dont clean the molds up when they sell them or before shipping them. I'm attaching a pic of some molds we recently bought. notice the star molds especially. and the octogon mold has it all over the sides. Any info will be appriciated

    thanks

  9. First of all You should ALWAYS scent by weight...your wax can only hold so much fragrance oil (FO)

the way to figure % is... 16oz wax X 6% = .96 or 1oz FO and 9% is 1.44 oz most of us use either 1oz or 1.5 oz per pd wax.

you have to look and see how much FO your wax can hold. It is best to start at 1oz per pd. this is by WEIGHT. You need a postal type scale.

    what is a scent block??????

    tootie

a scent block is sold by Yaley.com they look like the color blocks they sell but a concentrated scent.
