  1. The reason that I asked the question is because I just bought some warmers from Levine Gifts and they are NOT UL Listed. I was rather surprised and dissapointed. The price is not cheap and they look real nice. Do the Cozy-Ups that several of you had bad experiences with have a UL Listing?
  2. Grumpy, I may be interested in combining an order with you. I want to do a little research and testing first. I have a combo and a Cachepot from Livines: however they do not have a UL Listing . They do look real nice. I want to do some more testing. Beware of the "cozy-up". Read the extensive thread a little ways down the list. There is cheap and then there is cheap.
  3. What are your thoughts about electric candle warmers and tart burners that do NOT have a UL Listing?
  4. Grumpy, Are these what you are asking about? www.levinegifts.com Jim
  5. Spigotty spagutty spuss Do the spogot and you will not cuss. Corny Huh! Seriously, you will not regret it. Besides, even though it has a spigot you do not have to use it.
  6. Thanks Lezli, That answered my question.
  7. Does anyone put a safety label on their wickless candles? If so, what does it include?
  8. Blest2, On the Cacoon main page click on the blue bar with the white letters that says "The Scent Event Oils - Very Low Prices"
  9. Price correction: The prices are between $6.00 and $12.00 per pound depending on quantity purchased. The problem is that there are no scent descriptions and you can not purchase samples.
  10. Has anyone purchased any FO's from the Candle Cocoon"s "Scent Event"? They have a bunch of scents from $10.56 to $12.00 per pound depending on the quantity purchased. They are suppose to normally sell for $20. to $30. per pound. They are also not from their normal line of scents. If anyone has purchased any of these please let us know. If anyone is not familiar with them their link is: www.candlecocoon.com
  11. Scent Cellar, What type of wax do you use and how much PY-16 did you use per pound? Jim
  12. Has anyone tried PY-16? PY-16 is an additive that is suppose to help wax adhear to glass containers and prevent wet spots. I don't have wet spots when I first make container candles. They start showing up a week or two later. I have ordered some PY-16 and will be trying it next week. I just want to see if anyone else has used it and what the results were. By the way I am (currently) using J223.
  13. I know some FO's that work well in parafin do not work well in soy. My question is: Do most FO's that work well in soy also work well in parafin? OR, in certain parafin wax only? OR, can no such correlation be made?
  14. Pam, have you tried using grams instead of ounces? There are 28 grams per ounce. Assuming of course that your current scale measures in grams as well as ounces. Anyway it would be cheaper than a new scale.
  15. BerryPatch, remember that a 12 fluid ounce jar will hold less than 10 ounces, by weight, of wax ( assuming that the wax is parafin). The most it would hold is 12 ounces of bees wax. In any case, never 14 ounces by weight. Unless you are filling the jar with lead anchors, then I'm sure it will hold much more.
  16. The person that I spoke to was in customer service. She said they were fully aware that the jars weren't 14-ounce and that she would tell the owner that I was not satisified. Donita, I won't give the name of the supply house, but I will give you a clue and test your knowledge of American history and geography at the same time. The supply house that sells 14-ounce punpkin jars and plastic lids packed in plumbing supply cartons is in the 1st state North of the Mason Dixon Line.
  17. What do you think about a candle supply house KNOWINGLY falsely advertising a product? This is a major supplier. Not a classified or e-bay dealer. I recently ordered some 14-ounce jars. When they arrived I noticed that they appeared to be the same size as some simular 12-ounce jars that I have. Sure enough, I could only pour 12 fluid ounces of liquid into them (up to the brim). I e-mailed the supplier. No reply for two days so I called then. They said that they knew that they were only 12-ounce jars, but since their Chinese manufacturer advertised them as 14-ounce jars they did the same. Shipping costs were high because that supply house is far from me; however, I thought (silly me) that I was getting a larger jar than those that I purchased from another supplier. ALSO, They advertised a plastic lid for that same jar and I ordered some. Welllll, they don't fit. They don't seal the jar and if you tilt the jar sideways the, so called, lids fall off. The supplier said that the 'lids' don't SNAP on the jars the just SIT on top of it and that they are only meant to be a dust cover. If I wanted a dust cover I would use saran wrap. At least it wouldn,t fall off. Now in some defense of the supplier, they did say that I could return the products and get credit for some other purchase. Thats not good because I would be out $45. in shipping costs. It's a good thing that I only ordered 4 dozen 14-ounce jars. I don't really mind, but the products were shipped in a used (utility shower tub kit) box. Something like that is OK for you or I to do but I was a little surprised that a major supplier did it. I believe I remember reading another thread about that same thing. Anyway......please excuse me for spewing. I just came from the gas station. The price of gas just went up 20 cents since testurday. I just had to vent.
  18. Thanks for all your responses. Dana, What does Crisco do for you?
  19. All of you who claim to get a good hot scent throw are keeping your secret away from the rest of us. WHAT IS IT ????? Do you use some sort of magic potion that you aren't telling us about? Do you wave your stirring wand over your melting pot and mumble some sort of chant? OR do you spray air freshner in the room and claim that the smell comes from your candle? Well?? Ok, deep down inside I really know that the problem is that I am not doing something right. BUT, what is it? I have tried 7 different types of wax including 4630, 6006, 4786, J223, two types of soy and a soy/parafin blend. I am currently using J223. I do not believe the problem to be wax. I am using a 3" container and I get a full 3/8th inch melt pool in under 4 hours. I don't believe the problem to be lack of ample melt pool. I also tried a candle warmer (all melt pool). I have tried six different types of wicks. With J223 I am using HTP wicks which burn a litle hotter than some of the others. So. I don't believe the problem is the wick. Tried with and without dye. Nope I have tried 80 plus FO samples from 9 different suppliers. I know that some of the FO's were probably of low quality or out of date. I DID get a good strong throw from about 7 of them. The last two batches were from two of the most popular suppliers. One of them was PEAKS. I wonder if the HOT weather has anything to do with it. Could the 2 to 7 days ride in a hot UPS truck be the cause of my problem? After pouring I wait 3 to 30 days to burn them. It can't be cure time. It may be the way that I add FO to the wax. With J223 I heat the wax to 180 to 185 degrees in a presto pot. I then pour the measured amount of hot wax into a heated pour pot and place the pour pot into another presto pot that I use as a double boiler to maintain specific temperature. I have added the FO at 180, 170 and 160 degrees. I tried adding the FO first and last. I stir for 3 minutes. Do you stir gently or viggerously? With J223 I pour at 145 to 150 degrees (with washed and heated containers I get no wet spots). I've tried 3% to 10% FO loads (mostly 6 and 8 %). You might say that the problem is 'candle nose'. HOWEVER, other people have said the same thing (no or little scent throw). I tried burning in a big room and a little room. Nope, same problem. I am retired and I thought that this candle thing would be a good hobby and a nice way to earn a little extra spending money. For the past two and a half months I have spent a part of every day involved in this in one way or another. At this rate I will be in the 'old foggy' home tapping out Lawrence Welk tunes on my bed pan before I learn The Secret. SO GUYS!!!....Come clean, fess up, and spill the beans. WHAT'S THE BIG SECRET???????
  20. What is the cause of the fuel like smell when burning some candles with certain fragrance oils?
  21. Well, actually I got my idea to combine the J223 and 4786 wax from a supplier. They combine these waxes in the candles that they make and sell. I like the resulting appearance. It has a smoother top than either of the two alone. It is a little harder than J223 alone. It is nearly a "one pour" wax like J223 is alone ( 4786 is definutly not ). They both have a 10% load capability. I only want to use 6% FO load; but there may be times with some weak fragrances that I want to use more. It also gives me a little more margin of safety that there will be no FO leak. Both of the waxes are suppose to give a good hot and cold throw. Now ironically most of the FO's that I got from that supplier are the ones that have a poor hot throw. Some of them, however, give a very strong cold throw. I do get a good hot throw from some FO's that I bought from other suppliers. Like I said earlier, I am new to this candle making business and I may not know what a good throw is suppose to be like. A lot of people here are really impressed by Peak. I want to try some samples from them. Right now they are out of some of the FO's that I want to try.
  22. Hi PamW, If you look real close at the flat sides of the HTP wick, you can see a herring bone like pattern. On one side the pattern points up. On the other side the pattern points down. When lit the wick will curl toward the side of the wick that the pattern points up. I usually have to use a magnifing glass. Some times the wax coating on the wick is a little thick and you may have to scrape a little of this wax off to see the pattern. I have only tested this theory about a dozen times; however it has worked this way every time.
  23. How do you rate Fragrance Oils from the following suppliers? Cajun Candle Factory......... Bittercreek........ Lone Star........ Longwyck.... Peak........ Taylored Concepts...... The Candlemakers Store..... Wick your Wax...... Are they concentrated? Thus eliminating the need to us as much in order to knock your socs off.
