  1. Ruth, How is your melt pool? I know I discovered a WORLD of difference when I changed wicks. I think it is a matter of hitting on the right one for your wax, and wicking enough, by that I mean, getting the right size wick for the job. A hotter wick makes all the difference.

I understand your frustration, and I know that sooner or later, you will have an "a-ha!!" moment; it may take some changes.

How many other waxes have you tried before you chose this one?

    Hi Sharon.

If you don't mind me asking, what type of wicks between the cored and coreless have you been successful with in this 415 wax?

    TIA for any advice.

  2. I have been making candles a short time, I know compaired to alot of you ladies..

I started about 9 months ago..I have spent hundreds of hours in testing...

I go thru 30 to 40 FO's and am lucky to get 5 or so keepers out of that..Is this normal?

I am buying from Good sources..I believe I'm putting my candles together right..

I use 100% GB 415..it seems like this soy does not like to give a good HT..

Most have a wonderful CT..but when I light it up..nothing..

I cure from 1 to 3 wks..and have even cured some longer, if they are ones that I really like..I have tested some and within 15 min..wow it smells up a whole room..So I know that I can smell..lol :D

    I would appreciate your comments..

Wish I could give you some advice on wicking 415. I too have been working with this wax and it's been hit or miss with different fo's, (more miss than hit :cry2:).

I've been at this hobby for almost a year now. I'm at the point where I'm not so sure about what I'm doing anymore. I've tried 700 series wicks but wasn't happy with the funny "fuel" type smell that they would put off when burning. The LX wicks seem to work okay, but for me, the HT results were just okay (when I would get close enough to the candle, almost burning my face).

I'm digging into the nitty gritty details about different wicks and trying to learn the "real differences" between them. I too am looking for a good scent throw, both hot and cold. I seem to get a great CT with most fo's in my 415 but a good HT is a different story. Is there really a wick that works better for good HT? Wish I knew...

Good luck to you 8. I'll keep you posted with my HT success with this wax when and if I get it figured out.

Edited to say: I've recently tested fo's from Candlescience and they seem to be better than most other suppliers that I have tried.

  3. Hi CQ.

What wax are you using for your tarts?

If you used a molded wax such as votive/pillar or tart wax they should pop out of your molds as soon as they set up (maybe around 45 minutes or so) without using any mold release spray. If you used a container wax in you molds you will need to use a mold release spray and put them in the freezer to help with getting them out of the molds.

  4. I agree!!!

Candlescience has great customer service and their fo's are awesome too. I have 38 of their fo's, (2 and 3 leaf rated) and all of them are awesome in my 415 pure soy. You can't go wrong with their scents for natural wax candles.

  5. Did anyone else go through withdrawls when te site was down? I yell at my kids all the time about going on My Space, I think this is my My Space. I checked about 100 x a day to see if the site was back. All I can say is thank god I have some plcae to go and relate to things..... Welcome back one and all..

    :D :D :D :D :D

Cindy, you were not the only one going through CT withdrawls. I kept checking day in, day out, thought it was my computer so I tried to get on the forum from my brothers computer, still no luck.

:bliss:All I can say is, I'm sooo happy that it's up and running now. I shed tears of joy when the forum came back into my life.

  6. I have great luck with the MC FO's although I use 444 wax. I agree to add your FO at a cooler temp to see if that helps. One question though, where do you find ECO 16 wicks? I get my ECO's at BC and they only have up to 14. A 16 may help me with one of my jars.

CandleScience has pre assembled and spooled ECO 16.

  7. I have a Wagner 3500, variable temp (250F - 1350F) with 2 fan speeds. It works great! Got it at Amazon for $9.99. I applied for an Amazon credit card and received $30.00 off my first Amazon card purchase. On top of the $30.00 credit the heat gun qualified for free shipping.

I use my heat gun for soo many things, can't live without it now.

  8. i use 1.5oz.pp on some of them & some i use 1oz.pp.

thank you debra p. i'm no expert but i've been using mc's oils along time & i just don't have any trouble getting them to throw, i've found a couple that are to light throwing for me but that's it.

i would suggest to some of the posters to go back to square 1 do alot more reading, pick 1 wax, 1 size/kind of jar, 1 wick style. i have read all of your post & several of you are obiviously new to candlemaking quit jumping from wax to wax, wick style to wick style you are never going to get it figured out until you do. i do not mean this in a mean way, i'm really trying to help.

    Good point Carol!

One wax at a time, one wick at a time. Candle making takes patience.

  9. I appreciate all of your help! I posted this without thinking the question through (sorry, my wife is much better at this than I!) and I now realize how loaded this question actually was. I'll use the search feature and figure more out for myself. I look forward to working out other "kinks" in the candle making process with you all on the message board in the near future. Thanks again!

We are using a 12oz metro jar, Glass Glow wax, CSN 14 and 1oz FO. We're burning it for the first time this morning and it seems to be doing fine It's not burning perfectly clean to the edges, but extremely close. Hopefully we'll get the result we want in another burn or two.

That's okay, don't apologize, we all have to start somewhere. You guys will learn as you go and before you know it, you'll be pros. Ask all the questions you want, CT is one big team, we're all here to help.

Hang in there and have fun!!!

  10. How long are you curing your candles for? I've noticed that pure soy, (I use GB415) needs to cure longer for better/stronger HT results. I've used MC oils and have been happy with about 1/2 of the scents that I have tried. It's hit or miss with any fo supplier when your working with soy.

I add my fo at 175-180, pour at around 100 and usually get a great HT after about a 2 to 4 week cure. There are so many variables to candle making and results will vary from person to person, what works for one might not work for another.

  11. Hi Judy,

I also did several searches on this forum hoping to find other members opinions on Northstar scents. I was surprised to only find maybe 2 or 3 threads that mentioned very little about their oils. Since NS has soy based oils I thought it would be good for my GB415 wax. The following is a list of scents that I used that did throw in my wax. They would have been stronger had I let them cure longer.

    Berry Tangerine

    Blackberry Gelato

    Country Berry

    Country Garden

    Fig Melon

    Fresh Cut Tulips

    Honeydew Granita

    Honeysuckle

    Macintosh Apple

    Vanilla Pink Grapefruit

    Hope this helps. :rolleyes2
