  1. Ok, so which one is wind resistance with the cross bars in the top? I have looked at both descriptions and I don't see it in either one of them... did I miss it? Thanks!!!
  2. I received my postcard from the Jar Store yesterday! Now, I feel like I'm in the club!!! I have never purchased from BCN or Candle Cocoon so it can't be from them. And I don't have my vendor's license from my state but, I have registered my business name. However, the postcard was sent to me, not the business name. I purchase regularly from Candle Science (I really can't see these guys selling a mailing list), Nature's Garden, and Fillmore Containers. I have ordered from Indiana Candle Supply and Tenn Candle Supply, as well as a few more. Interesting... so is anyone going to use the 10% discount or did this type of advertising backfire on them? I'm still debating even going to their site to look at what they have.
  3. First, I want to say thank you for all the great suggestions!!! My 1st choice when deciding that I wanted to start a business was Pine Creek Candles... but the domain name is taken. Even though, there isn't a web page up for the business, it's got to be out there somewhere, right. My 2nd favorite is Mountain Laurel Originals but I kind of agree with the comment about the word Originals, Creations, etc.... it does sound start up and it doesn't roll off the tongue. I also found a Mountain Laurel Soaps online and since I want to eventually branch into Bath and Body... it doesn't seem right to use Mountain Laurel with whatever I would add to it. It could get confusing. Then there is Miller Farms... it does sound like a food business. So, now I don't like it (believe me, I am driving my husband batty, too :embarasse ) But, last night (or morning), I had a flash. What do you think of: Pine Laurel I am afraid to say I like it but, it combines my 2 favorites, domain name seems available (for now), and implies country with a little class. Thanks again for all of your help.
  4. Can't wait to hear what you come up with... thanks!
  5. Hi, everyone!! I have only posted a few times but I am addicted to reading all the threads for ideas, help, knowledge, etc. First, let me say, this group seems to be one of the most helpful, creative group available. Not trying to "brown nose" but it is so nice to realize that there are people like me out there! I have been testing soy based candlemaking for about 1 year now, still have a ways to go, but am convinced this is what I was meant to do... enough said! I seem to be stuck now on creating a business name. My 1st idea was Pine Creek Creations but have come to realize that it's probably not a good idea. I know there is Pine Tree Candles and it seems like pretty much every Creek seems to be represented in the Candle making world!! I am originally from Pennsylvania, now residing in North Carolina for the last 20 years, but I will admit my heart is in the hills of PA. I like country but really not totally prim. I want to start with candles, but want to branch into soaps and lotions eventually. I really don"t want to be limited to Candles in my business name. My ideas so far are: Mountain Laurel Originals (state flower of Pa, kind of a play on my name and it's abundant where I am from)... my favorite so far. Tiadaghton Originals (this is the State Forest name around Pine Creek and it is the Iroquois name for Pine Creek... it would make sense to the people of the area but I am afraid that the spelling will really throw people outside of this area of PA.) Miller Farm Originals (my family name, I grew up on a dairy farm and it would represent my family, particularly my Dad, who was my hero). Figure 8 Originals (our favorite family field...). My husband suggested it... it wouldn't mean anything to anyone but my family, but it kind of strikes a chord with me. After this, I am drawing a blank. I am willing to incorporate a North Carolina aspect but can't seem to come up with anything that just rolls off the tongue. I do like the idea of Mountains being represented... that's a part of my heritage. Where I am from, we also pronounce Creek as Crick so I was thinking that might be an idea... Crick Creations or Crick Originals... it will admit, overall I like Originals rather than Creations but am open to any ideas you have to offer. Thanks for any suggestions. I look forward to hearing anything that you might have to offer.
  6. Maggie... thanks for the correct website for Fillmore Containers... I have them saved in my favorites and I always mess up Filmore vs. Fillmore! I've been very pleased with what I ordered from them so far. I am hoping to get by there sometime in the summer to meet them. I would be interested in hearing what soy you are blending with the C-3 because while I like the EcoSoya CB135, like I said before, it's not perfect. I realize that most likely I am going to end up in the long run with blending also to get what I am looking for. If you want to keep your blend idea private, I understand. Thanks for the save!
  7. Oh, sorry forgot to add this... I find that with CB135, depending on the fragrance, that I get best results with 1.5 oz. of fragrance per pound of wax. But, you really need to work that out when you are testing. Also, CB135 is a little soft for making tarts. It does not release well from tart molds...I use Ecosoya PB for my tarts and that works great.
  8. Hi, I use EcoSoya CB135 and I don't have any scent throw problems. I find this soy to be the easiest to resist frosting but you have to be careful with it because it can be tempermental! Warming your jars and pouring around 110% seems to help frosting issues. I was using NatureWax C-3 and liked it but the guys at Candlescience recommended trying the EcoSoya CB135. I am close enough to them to pick up so shipping charges is not an issue for me. And, they are GREAT to work with... just a wonderful group of people! Since you are in PA (my home state!), you might also want to considering looking at Filmore Containers' website...I think they are around Lancaster. They have NatureWax C-3 and their prices are reasonable. Also, they have great prices on jars... and their shipping charges for me in NC are not so bad. And, they also ship pretty fast. They also allow pick up... I am going to place an order around the next time I go to PA to visit family so I can meet them... I like to know the people I deal with, when possible. They seem like a decent company. Their website is www.filmorecontainer.com. Good luck, candlemaking is very addicting!!
  9. Ginger... that's good to know! Honestly, I am quite sick of smelling Mistletoe and Pumpkin Pie. I guess I will just store them and move onto spring/summer scents. I have a tomato leaf I can't wait to try... when I told some co-workers about it, they kind of gave me a funny look. That might just have to be something I make for me. I have a tendency to like some of the more different scents. Thanks for the reply!
  10. Hey! Good to know there are other "Tarheels" here! I am originally from PA but have been in NC so long that my husband's family no longer refers to me as "that D*** Yankee!" What's funny about that, though, is that I grew up way more country than they ever dreamed of!! Thanks for the welcome.
  11. I know this has been discussed before but I need some help from some of the more experience candlemakers! I kind of went reallly wild with buying Christmas fragrance oils...drove my husband nuts!! Okay, so I of course ended up with a stockpile. Would it be better to just store the fragrances until next season or should I go ahead and make the candles? I guess it would be a great way to test... I have basically been using 8 oz jj and I also make tarts. I do want to start experimenting with apothecary jars and tins. Basically what I am asking, will stored fragrance oils (kept in a dark area) last as long as a candle? I use Ecosoya CB 135 if that matters at all. Hope this makes sense!! Thanks for your help!
  12. We also have 2 parakeets in our home and I never even considered how burning candles would affect them. We have not had any problems, though. Now, something new to worry about!!
  13. I've ordered supplies from Cierra several times and always had a good experience. I think only two of my orders were over $100 and I received the free shipping but I was aware of the weight limit. It did take a while to get the orders (little over a week) but I am across the country from them. Even if it is over the 30 lb limit, you should get a discount. Hope it works out for you!!
