  1. I'm refering to round soap cavity molds. I have used pvc before but I want to do a specific application. Basically I want to cut loofa into 1" round pieces and pour a light trace of soap into the 1.5" cavity mold, drop the cut loofa circle into it then pour soap around it and on top of it.

My concern is the whole gel process etc. In the molds I generally insulate so my soap gels. I'm wondering if cavity molds can be used for CP soaps. I'm under the impression that cavity molds are generally for M&P soaps. I'm I wrong with this assumption?

  2. Just invest in the EO. It is very much worth it. I think you can still get it about $30. pp. A little goes a very long way. You can mix it with other cheaper oils too like sweet orange that is only $8.00 pp. That is much cheaper than any FO. I recently made an orange, Patch, lavender at only 3%. It was super strong, enough to fill a few rooms. There's nothing like the real thing. You could charge more for EO candles too.

I forgot to say the real Patchouli ages. It gets stronger and deeper smelling the longer you have it.

Where can you get 16oz of patcholi EO for $30?

  3. All I know is there is absolutely no need to go outside of these boards for molds. We have the best of both worlds here with itsmeJeff and SoapMaker Man. I purchased an 18'in HDPE mold and couldn't be happier. I have a system down where my soap practically slides right out. It takes me under a minute to line my mold and under 15 seconds to break down and release my perfect soap from the mold. I'm planning on heading to SoapMaker Man's house sometime soon to check out his products. All I know is that both give exceptional customer service and stand behind their products 100%.

  4. After being on this board for a while now learning all kinds of info for our candles I have been bitten by the soap bug! Now I am off to buy some soaping books from ebay. I can't take it anymore I have to try soap. Wish me luck. Karen:yay:

    Same here =). SOAPING PWNS!

  5. Pre-Creamed shortning is mainly tallow and lard. I render my own tallow. I call our local butcher and he saves me the kidney fat and sells it to me for like .15 cents per pound ground up for me. Kidney fat is the best fat to render from beef. I can give you some if you drop by.

    Paul....

Dang, I seriously need to drive up to your neck of the woods. I need to hit Springfield soon for some candle wax. People still wanting candles... I use to love making candles until I started soap =P. All I'll probably need is beveller for now. You dont have to give me tallow. I would buy it from you for much higher $$ then what you pay since you put in all of the elbow grease =).

  6. "Beef tallow - This fat is extracted from beef adipose tissue. By definition, tallow is fat rendered primarily from cattle, but it also is fat from sheep and goats.

Inedible tallow gives numerous and various derivatives from plastics, lotions, soaps and detergents, tires, candles, paints and varnishes, lubricants and several pharmaceuticals."

Just read the ingredients .. if you see lard or tallow listed then you'll know.

Nevermind I think I found the answer.

  7. Is Lard the same as tallow? We generally use shortening for our soap but found a glyc recipe that calls for tallow.

I'm in southern missouri - is this something that is generally ordered via net? I did a search on the boards with no luck.

  8. From what I've read, candle chips can not be used in soaps. Bittercreek and others sell dye chips for soap. HTH

crap.. I used one chip =). The orange vanilla soap turned out perfect. Thanks for your info. I would have called candlescience but it was closed and we had already mixed the lye/water and fat/oils when we decided orange lol.

oh well.. pretty and yummy smelling soap ALL FOR ME WOOHOOO.

  9. ok, now i'm really crapping my pants. This is my baby and i'm scared my customers are gonna hate it.

Hope you like it. I'm no web designer so this has taken me 3 months of hard work to build it from scratch, doing the photos, descriptions, teaching myself flash etc etc.

I must say, I feel TOTALLY liberated at being able to get rid of paypal. I created a totally integrated basket and checkout that accepts debit/credit cards so no more paypal - yay!

anyway, I only just uploaded it, so i'm still proof-reading...but here it is:

    be gentle!

did you use that open source zen shopping cart sys? You learned how do actionscript (search) and flash in 3 months! That's awesome.

  10. Those are only your first? Wow, they look great!

Thanks! Ya. I was scared ea. time to lol. So many steps and things to consider vs. making container candles. Locals keep asking me when I'm going to make another batch of candles and I don't know what to tell them cuz all I have on my mind is soap haha.

  11. If you need to sub an oil, you can always check out soapcalc and play in there.

First, select the oil called for in the recipe. Then take note of the numbers for it, especially in the fatty acids section. Select different oils until you find one with similar numbers and you've found a likely suitable replacement oil.

    Good luck!

(I'd answer the question exactly but 1- it's the "teaching a man to fish" philosophy and 2 - I don't use Hydro. Soy... sorry...)

Hmm.. I just realized that Crisco main ingredient is soy. Is Crisco hydrogenated soy?
