I've been making candles for almost a year and I love it! I'm planning on starting my own business in the candle industry within the next couple of years.

  1. So much great advice on this website! Thanks for all your help! It makes life a little easier:-)
  2. I haven't seen anything about a 100K limit to establish yourself as a LLC. You can change from Sole Proprietor to LLC at any time I believe as long as you file all the right documents. Your state's website can help you out with the details.
  3. I did some research on starting a LLC in VA. It looks like the total filing fee will be about $100-150 which is definitely worth it! THanks for all the great replies and links! To reply to the last comment - Insurance is definitely good too but I'm sure the insurance company has a cap limit too, right? So if you were sued and the plaintiff was granted more than this limit I think you would be liable (i.e. your personal assets)...I'm not sure about this but I would think that's how it works...
  4. Before I start selling my candles I want to establish my business - get a business license, tax id etc. Any suggestions whether to pick sole proprietor or Limited Liability Company (LLC)? I'm getting insurance too but with the sole proprietorship you're still liable with all your assets. Just wanted to know what has worked for you? Thanks!
  5. Thanks for all the good advice. I'll check out Handmade Beauty Network insurance. I'll talk to my landlord too.....
  6. Makes sense. Thanks for all your help! I greatly appreciate it:)
  7. Ok. Thanks! I'll look into making a couple of soaps then too:smiley2: Always open to learn something new. I thought zoning laws only applied to business owners who had customers buying directly from the business address (like a store in a privat home)?Or did I completely misunderstand that?
  8. I live in VA. Is it a problem if you make your candles in your house/apartment but don't own your house/apartment you live in?
  9. Thanks! I thought so....just wanted to get a second opinion. I want to present a professional image from the start. Any recommendations on insurance companies?
  10. I have a lot of people expressing interest in buying my candles. I have not yet gotten a tax ID and I'm not a registered business owner. I also have no insurance since I've only been making candles for personal use. Do you recommend selling candles without being registered or having insurance? Please help!
  11. I tried them when I first started out in candlemaking about a year ago. I haven't had any issues with their paraffin waxes. I've had no problems releasing the candles from my metal molds (even when I forgot the mold release....). After putting them in the fridge for about 10 minutes it came right out:-) I've had no issues with GenWax. The order takes a week to get to VA.I recently ordered their mottled wax but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I like their selection and everything is packed well. I wasn't impressed with their FO - not bad but not great. After reading a lot of posts here I ordered FOs from Peak and just received them today! Can't wait to try them! I'm trying out my luck with Eco Soy waxes because I want to avoid the repour and I like that too. I hope this helps.
  12. I just received a two piece Christmas Tree candle mold from Peaks today and I can't wait to try it out this weekend. Small problem though....I'm not sure how to wick the candle. There's a little bit of room for a wick but not much....do you make the wick fit into that 'pocket' or do you make a small hole pull the wick through and seal it with mold sealer?
  13. What about using your hairdryer to gently heat the mold for a couple of seconds - not too much or it will be a big mess....maybe the heat will help you release the candle?
