  1. That's okay and you are entitled to your opinion. Yes I was TOLD this and I did see it first hand. I am saying that since it did happen to me, and infact most reputable gas fireplace companies will tell you this, I saw the proof first hand. Now I'm not here to argue and I will not all I know is I NEVER bashed a paraffin candle I was just stating my opinion as you were. I prefer soy, so what, you prefer paraffin, so what. It's just a matter of preference, I never bashed a paraffin candle nor did I say I believe what is printed, as far as that goes we are all poluting the air by making any type of candle.

Again, you were TOLD this. You never saw this in writing from anyone that did scientific studies did you? I have burned parrafin for yearsssssssss and have always had gas fireplaces and never had a problem. Hmmmm I am not trying to get nasty with you, just trying to show you that all you are getting your facts from hearsay and web crap , not from scientific studies that are written in stone.
  2. Thanks Bill I was looking for that. I knew I read it somewhere. All in all, you can't please everyone and people are entitled to their opinions. So, if it works for you than do it.

Someone mentioned that the "majors" such as Eco Soya would have the benefits listed on their website if they were true. Well.........NGI makes Eco Soya and here is a link to their website describing the benefits of soy.

    http://www.ngiwax.com/AboutEcoSoya/Benefits.php

  3. Now if I read what I posted right, I made NO mention of Soy candles being better than paraffin. The only thing I said about paraffin candles are they clog the gas logs up--which HAS been proven. I DO know this for a fact because we have 2 gas fireplaces not even 3 years old and we have replaced the logs at least once in each of them---they should have lasted a good 10 years. We WERE told by someone who has been in the gas fireplace business for 10 years that the paraffin candles are what did it--I always bought them and burned them---from a major candle company. Since gas fireplaces are a huge industry here I am just trying to save others the expense of having to prematurely replace the logs.

I would never say soy candles are 100% natural becasue there is NO candle that is 100% natural due to what is put into it.

    http://www.candle-licious.com/html/soy_vs_paraffin.html.

The only thing I don't agree with is they say the soy wax is not watersoulable. I know it is without the scent and dye because it and I think it cleans up quite nicely with hot, soapy water.

Here is something about soy and parrafin candles. I'm not by any means against paraffin candles.

I find it offensive. Prove the cancer crap to me and tell me the reason why you use it? So we can take this one at a time, but there's not even a reason to bring it up is there? Yet, you do.

Soy wax is not a natural by-product. Do you think they squeeze the bean to get the wax? It doesn't just peal off the bean either. It's manufactured to get the wax from what's left of the product once the farmers harvest them, but the wax is a minute portion of soybean growing in the US.

I don't buy the expanded burn time either. I think that's a joke.

Good to know that there is now a gas fireplace issue out there.

You did forget that using soy wax will keep your Mona Lisa's from losing that smile ... :tongue2:

  4. I agree. Although soy is all I make, besides some gel candles, I can't bash the paraffin ones because the gel is petroleum based like the paraffin and I would be counterdicting myself! I do state the facts of the soy over paraffin just to let people who have health problems know there are alternatives. If someone who wanted paraffin contacted me I would refer them to someone else.

I am new to this candle making business and I am learning as I go on so bear with me here. From all the research I have been doing everywhere I go I see articles and information on the benefits of soy over parrafin. I am not sure that a newspaper article pointing out all of the benefits is so bad. If they were bashing a particular candle maker then that is a problem. If soy wax does burn cleaner and longer then why shouldn't someone use that as a selling point to their candle? I plan on making soy candles as long as they are cleanest burning on the market. If something else comes out in the future that burns cleaner than soy I would change. Does anyone else out there defend my standpoint or am I all alone on this one, lol!
  5. Maybe as long as you don't add any additives to the wax and make sure the wick size is right. I don't make a lot of tea lites so maybe someone more seasoned in tea lites might give you a better answer.

So am I safe to assume an unscented t-lite should not produce soot?
  6. I use their jars but have never tried their FOs. We were burnt a few times on "great" FOs. So we just started making our own. I have heard others like them though.

Has anyone tried them and what do you think about them? Im thinking about ordering some jars from them and wondered how good their FO's are?

    Thanks :)

    Kristy

  7. I use the C3 P1 for pillars but have never used it for votives. I use the V1 and so far, knock on wood, I haven't had problems with it.

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone has tried using c-3 for votives. I have used v-1 but cracks too much. I know that additives would be needed. I was just curious.

    Thanks!

  8. I use The Jar Store right now exclusively for my candle glass. I just love it! I hope you're happy with them too!

Ahhh...I'm on that adventure right now. Ordering from a manufacturer can be really expensive. Not the cost each. But, you may have to order by the pallet.

So far, I have discovered a company called Fairway Glass. They cater to smaller orders. I requested some samples and they were delivered in 2 days. Unfortunately, I cannot use their jars. The quality is outstanding. It's the fitment for my application that keeps me from buying.

So, I found another possibility. They are called The Jar Store. They also own Decor Trends. I just called them a few days ago for samples. So, I don't know if they are good or not. Last year, I had problems with the fitments. They promised me, they changed manufacturers. That's a good thing. Besides, samples are free and I will test them to make sure wll before i buy.

Another place you could shop is a restaurant supply warehouse. Beer mugs, coffee cups, Irish Coffee Mugs and a bunch of other glasswares. I had beer mugs and Irish Coffee mugs coming out of my ears. They sold quickly. I don't remember how much I paid for them. But, it was a deal I could NOT refuse. They were either Anchor or Libby. I forgot.

You can shop at a Dollar Store. But, you are taking a chance. You don't know who made them. You don't know if there is enough silica in the glass to keep it from shattering. Above all, you don't want a certified letter coming from someone's lawyer.

    I hope this helps.

    Rick

  9. Although I have had some sales for unscented candles, most of our sales come from scented candles. Now, we have always had a huge amount of sales from uncolored candles. The soy wax, depending on the FO, has a nice pretty natural white glow anyways. We have been told "white goes with everything."

I am amazed at how many more unscented candles I am selling this year. Last weekend my sales were almost 50% unscented. Are others finding a similar trend in their areas?

  10. I personally do not like the EZ Sy wax but it might be the FO. We manufacture our own FOs. I had a customer say once that they had problems with one of our strongest FOs. I didn't understand how this could be until I did some checking into the batch it came from. I found the problem and sent her out a free replacement because it was out fault. So maybe the batch your FO came from was bad somehow. Just a thought...HTH:highfive:

Using a tried and true strong FO for soy, BCN, Spiced Cranberry. Tried 1 oz per lb, 1.25 oz per lb, plan to try 1.5 next. I am not having any problems with wicking or melt pool. Just no hot throw even after 3 weeks of curing. Using CD 12 or 14 in 8 oz jjs. Cold throw on 1 oz very weak, cold throw on 1.25 good. How do people only use 1 oz per lb FO with Ezsoy and get strong scent? I am adding FO at 170 to 180. Also use just under 1/2 oz beeswax pellets per lb of Ezsoy. What can be the problem here? I know its not the FO, great throw in paraffin.
  11. I use C3 and have an awesome scent throw both hot and cold. I mix a little beeswax with it to make the smooth tops. You also need to pour this slushy.

I just dont understand what it is w/me and soy. I started out with the GB 464, worked out the kinks and was very pleased with it, then suddenly my local supplier stopped carrying it and sent me 415 instead. I went on a hunt and found no suppliers anywhere near me that had 464, so I began working with the 415. Aside from having to pour slushy, I liked the 415 better than the 464 as far as throw. So now I go back to order more 415, and my supplier has stopped carrying it too! Once again, I searched around and cant find a local supplier for it. :cry2: I even checked out BCS cause I knew they sold EZ Soy which I heard is basically the same as 415 but it is no longer in stock. I really need a great hot/cold throwing soy that I can get in OK/TX area. One that isnt going to be discontinued. I dont color my soy candles, so frosting isnt an issue w/me. I do want a one pour, but I dont mind pouring slushy to get smooth tops. I want a 100% soy, or a soy w/modifier, no parasoy blends. Can anyone give me some feedback? I have searched through threads, but would really like some feedback from those that have used the GB 415 and are now useing something they like better. Anyone have any opinions on EL waxes?

    TIA for any comments/suggestions. :grin2:

  12. If the jar has a large opening I double or even triple wick. You just have to be carefull to not over wick. That could cause unnecessary sooting and the candle might burn too fast. Just a thought...HTH

I am testing the 6-7 ounce tureen jar with KY 125. I started off using two LX 16. Did not get hot enough burn so I pulled the LX 16's and put in two LX 18. Stronger scent throw. After about one hour I noticed that I did not smell it as strong so I went and looked at the candle and one of the wicks had submerged under the melted wax. Did this happen because the jar is so short or did I do something wrong or maybe because the wick was not stuck to the jar and it floated out? I really like this jar but man it is hard to wick.
  13. Just reemeber that when you make tarts with container wax they will be sticky. I use the C3 and I love it but just for the container candles. We don't make tarts very often because we have more of a demand for the container ones. So, I'm not sure what would be a good tart wax. I know a supplier I uses makes her "so-in-demand" tarts from the ecosoya pillar wax, but I have nevere tried it.

Hi everyone ! I want you to know that I am very discouraged. I figured I start making tarts, that were out of this world, on a part time basis, and make a hobby into a small income. So far I have spent more than I should have and not seen the results that I expected.

The only positive thing is that if I make tarts out of Joy Wax (container wax) with 1.5oz fo. I get great throw. Yes the first inexperienced move I made was to get Joy Wax (very good wax for what I can see) and make tarts. Naturally they were very sticky, yet when I popped some in a simmering pot I got an excellent throw. Since I had purchased the wrong wax for tarts, I ended up making candles and getting hardly any throw.

Lastly, I purchased LP 416 and my tarts don't melt in the electric tart burner or the simmering pots. The first two batches were small and the heat went up considerably in my little fryer and these actually have a better throw then the ones were I kept the heat low. These tarts are very hard, I am wondering if any of you use any other tart wax that is softer ( I had purchased tarts on the internet and they were perfect and a little softer than the ones I made). I am thinking that If I bring up the fo to 12% instead of 3tbsp per lb (I think the difference isn't a lot) that I might get a better through as long as I bring the temp. up to 180, maybe ?, and add fo at 160 and pour at 120.

I am waiting for NG's, Santa's wiskers, Loving Spell, Pink Sugar, Cinnamon Buns, Frangelico Strussel so that I can pour my next batch. I think that I will test 1lb at a time to see what happens.

I must say that I am very happy to have found this forum.... it is lonely out here... when you are starting out.

Thanks for posting and please post advice. :cry2:

  14. http://www.fil-tec.com/candles/ultra.html. Check out this company. It's cool because on the right hand side of the bottom of page gives you 5 different wicks to click on. With each wick you click, it shows you how the wicks look during the wax pouring process. We use Fil-Tech 2.402 Ultra Core. I just love these wicks in our soy candles. Let me know what you think. You can buy like a sample kit for like $20.00. I did that and wished I bought more!!!

I am very disappointed with the CD wicks from Tennessee Candle.

I need a different supplier with higher standards and good quality CD's.

    Thanks to all who respond,

  15. I got so sick of having to stop, fill up the Presto, wait on it to melt, and then go again, that I decided this was the next reasonable step. I got it for $79.00 with my 20% off, so it was a good deal. Now I'll go pour since all of have helped me.

Wow for $100.00 I'm going to buy on right after the holidays. So tell me, where is the best place to get this pot? So this is a turkey frier?

  16. I was exactly in the same position. I started with GW444 and was happy with it but then I found a supplier 10 miles away and all the had was Nature wax. I tried and it works even better for me. It makes great candlea, very smooth looking and I get a great throw with it.

    I love it, try it.

I'm with you Katie. I love C3 wax. The best scent throw and container adheration!

  17. Love this! How cute...

And, you could tack on (not necessarily as part of the NAME... but a tagline on a logo/webpage/etc...) "Scents & Suds" to give a bit more clue as to what you're offering.

I whipped this up in Paint Shop Pro in about 5 minutes, so.. it's not gorgeous (and definetley not my best PSP work)... but I think it'd be a totally cute concept!

    Awwww this is soooo cute!

  18. Hello everyone, I am needing you all help. I want to change my business name from Macy's Boutique. I need you all to help me. I am thinking about using my real name which is Mary. Macy is a nickname my ex calls me and I do not want to use it anymore but if I can't think of something else then I might keep it:undecided . Some of the names I have in mine are: Mary's Bath & Body

Bath and Body by Mary, and Mary's Bath and Candle Shoppe. Do you think I should keep the Boutique in the name? Sorry so long and thanks for your help.

    Mary

How about something like Mystical Scents...kinda crazy...lol

  19. Way to go Kimberly. That is totally awesome.!!!!:highfive:

That's awesome. I'm glad you have had a great experience. I am hoping to do the same. I agree with the "no show" deal. There are already too many candle makers out there and I always hear how they never do very well at the shows. We are in the process of building a room ONLY for my candle manufacturing. I'm going to be "pounding the pavement" as soon as I'm setup! Good luck in the future!
