  1. Ya know.. Like Julie said, if your gonna get cancer, your gonna get it.. Cancer is not predjudice. My brother never smoked a cig in his life and got throat cancer that they see 99% of in smokers. He had stage 4 cancer. Thank god he is doing better today but if anything is gonna give people problems , it's gonna be the FO , not the Wax!

Yep I was thinking the same thing. And about the cancer, my grandfather smoked from the time he was 14...lived 92 years and never had cancer...and he smoked like 3 packs a day at least. I guess that just wasn't his way to go out. Thanks for the info. though.

  2. Didn't we just have this thread??????

Are you thinking about the paraffin bashing one. No, this one I was asking a question, not bashing anything. Actually that thread is what compelled me to try paraffin candles just to see what they were like myself---then I met that guy...so I was just wondering if anyone else had or knows or anyone else with the same problems.

  3. Romasoy, please go to www.epa.gov and read. Then read some more.

And take the time to notice that:

    1) Most of the EPA report is concerning emissions WITH lead wicks.

    2) Most of the emissions are from the FRAGRANCES added--they state this very clearly.

    3) They also state that they burned 30 candles in a room for 3 hours and tested the air quality, guess what? Less toxin that ONE cigarette.

    4) Most of the toxins emitted were from candles that were sooting, they contribute that to--a badly made candle, incorrect burning, drafts.

These are my words, you need to read what comes from the government not what these people are misconstruing it to say. When the soy companies bash paraffin, the forget to leave those very important details out of the picture.

I read that so I see what you mean. I guess, thinking about how soys are made also, they could cause about the same problems because they are scented with oil-based scents.

  4. Boy is this what the marketing ploys have spun off and into? What about second hand smoke? Could this guy have been around it? What about genetics? Some just get cancer because ... no rhyme no reason. Roma, stop. Seriously. Think about it and the logic. Paraffin does not have carcinogens in it. Seriously.

Now you know I don't expect to be slain for this. I was simply asking a question because I don't know anything about paraffin. I have always thought it is better to ask questions than to assume. I didn't say I believed him I was simply asking about opinions from people who do make paraffin candles. If no one else has encountered these problems than that's fine and I will come to my own conclusions, but sarchasim isin't what I asked for.

  5. You're kidding, right?

Nope if I was I wouldn't have asked the question. The guy said he is getting rid of his soy making because the market is so saturated now and the paraffin has caused him all those problems. He said it doesn't help that he used to make $100,000/yr with $60,000 profit and now he makes $70,000/yr with $22,000 profit due to the increased cost of the supplies on the rise. I thought everything is on the rise not just candle supplies. I just wanted to try paraffin to try something new, then after he told me that I thought I would find out from others who have made them for awhile as well. I'm not in the habit of believeing the first thing that I hear. So other's opinions would be helpful.

  6. This past weekend 2 of my older daughters needed a dress for their semi-formal dance. We went all over Michigan City, Indiana and South Bend, Indiana looking for "their perfect dress". While we were at a mall there in Michigan City we walked down this one particular aisle in which my hubby asked me if I saw the candles this guy was selling. I briefly walked by them but wasn't interested. Hubby was so we went back to look at them and the guy asked if I make candles because of the way I was looking at them. I told him I only make the soy ones---haven't made any paraffin yet. He said he has been making candles for 15 years and is in negiotations with a place who is closing their doors due to the increased price in candle making supplies. That company has contracts with places like Disney. Anyways, he told me to steer away from the paraffin making unless I wear a respirator because the last 15 years of paraffin has caused him to have lung problems and he is now undergoing biopsies for possible lung cancer and he is only 35----never smoked a day in his life! I feel so bad for him.

I was thinking about trying paraffin but now I'm not so sure. 2 of our kids have asthma and I know how hard it is to keep them out of the hospital in our "clean as possible" home environment. I was wondering if any paraffin makers have been making candles as long or longer and if you have any health problems due to the paraffin?

  7. PHEW! My second order due today is labeled and ready to be delivered. 38 tins for the second shift supervisor to give as Christmas gifts. Half are Hollyberry and half are Creme Brulee.

Between baking and pouring, my little butt is wore out! hmmm maybe time for some hot buttered rum! :D

Hey I always wondered how the tins do once the candles are lit? Does the temperature rise quite a bit?

  8. Still as yummy as when it was made like 2 days ago (I know, let it cure and let's see if it mellows.) I wish I could do things like this regularly though, because I love what was inside (on most of the bars)!

  9. I am sooooo pissed off right now. I just tried to generate 3 shipping labels and got redirected saying "paypal was unable to connect to the USPS shipping center" or whatever the hell it says and that my account would be credited within 5 minutes. Well, it's been over 5 minutes, more like 30 minutes. So, I called paypal. I was told that I will be credited in up to 21 days because the post office has to verify the labels weren't used. The main problem with this is....I never got to the page that has the "Pay and Continue" button so how the f**k did I pay USPS for the label? All the idiot could say to me was "I do apologize for your inconvenience and Paypal is aware of this issue that's why you got the "unable to connect to USPS" message. Hello, McFly.....if I was never able to connect please tell me how the f**k it was able to charge for a label? LMFAO, that left her speechless for almost 30 seconds and then it was "I do apologize..." At that point, I cut her off and told her if Paypal knows there is a problem with the link to USPS then they should disable the feature so people aren't charged. LMAO, that left her speechless again. I hope my entire conversation was taped for "quality control purposes!!!!" I just demonstrated the only requirement for customer service at Paypal is a freakin brainstem (and not much of that)!!!!!

I can empathize with you. Paypal is a PITA many many many times over and that's why we don't even deal with them anymore!---not for anything!

  10. When I make things like lotion bars I use Vitamin E oil as a natural preservative. It just makes the products last longer without smelly or moldy bacteria.

Over the past 10 yrs I've spent thousands on anti-aging products. On looking at many of the ingredient lists, I found that squalane was at the top for the most expensive products.

I bought some this past week from the Chemistry Store and have done many hours of searching for uses of this. For the past week, I have put it on my face straight. I would like to work with it with a few additional ingredients, but so far have found nothing that is simple enough for me. I would prefer not to include a preservative. Is this possible?

Research has shown several common ingredients in "anti-aging" serums and creams. Those include FCO, cranberry seed extract, emu oil.

I only have 2 oz of the squalane. A couple of drops goes a long way on my face straight. Could someone point me in the right direction for developing a recipe using squalane. I would also like it to have the antioxidant properties.

Would the ingredients have to be heated? If so, to what temp?

Any help or suggestions are certainly appreciated. :cheesy2:

  11. So last night I did it! I tried my first round of Feather Palm.

The two together was my first try. They are scented Cranberry Spice. The pics are a bit light as they are deeper in real life.

The second is scented Mullberry and is a deeper shade of berry. I like the patterns that came out on this one.

I have right now cooling a 5 inch tall one that is 2 color layered 1/2 Mullberry and 1/2 Blueberry Cobbler with a deep blue. I can't wait to get it out of the mold and see if that one worked.

The wicks are not trimmed so excuse them please. I trim them right before I burn.

Overall I'm thrilled these came out! Tomorrow I'll be making dark green ones with Xmas Tree scent for xmas pressies. Also waiting for my bayberry wax to make tapers. I'll post those if they come out. :)

    Thanks for all the advice!

    Beautiful!

  12. I currently use freewebs for my web hosting but it's been a royal pain to work with lately. Can't even get in sometimes. What do you use for free web hosting?

    TIA!

    ~Michelle~

We use www.citymax.com. We have tried countless website hosts and this seems to be the most complete, easy to use one---excellent customer service! They even fix things on your pages instead of just telling you how to! Let me know what you think.

  13. Me personally, I make to order. I have one I have made up that's for display purposes to show people what they will end up like, but otherwise I dont dip them until they are ordered. I always keep plenty of bears (and other critters) and FO in stock. Not sure how everyone else does though.

Yep same here. Made to order only. Just make sure you don't use container wax. I use pillar wax usually.

  14. That's kind of a harsh stand to take. You'll seriously miss out on some fabulous FO's with that take on things. Sure, you might get some junkers from other places.. but to stop and say you'll never try anything from anyone besides Peaks is just flat out silly.

I understand what your saying but I have to agree with wild on this one. I have tried many many suppliers and I wanted strong FOs that I would be proud to pass on to my customers. I have been taken for a ride many many times---to a very expensive tune---so we just learned how to manufacture them ourselves. Now, if someone else has a FO I have never heard of I will try it from time to time. It just always brings me back to ours. I'm not saying that ours are the best but it's just what I prefer.

  15. I feel your pain! You know, we even gave them many chances and they still screwed up. We went with FedEx to decrease our shipping charges since they are cheaper than like UPS....well....you know that old saying "You get what you pay for?"....yea well...you get my drift? I would rather pay more for shipping and know that my customers and I will be half way taken care of.:wink2:

The FedEx guy must hate me. He ALWAYS goes to my neighbor's house. For a long time she accepted the packages, but always told him that I lived in the next house. Then one day she decided not to accept the package (because it was rather large and heavy) and told him that he had the wrong address. The fool (Mr. FedEx) didn't even try to get the package to my house, he just returned it to the sender and said that it was refused. This happened several times (I can really understand my neighbor's reluctance to constantly accept my packages). Now I have to really want something to order if it ships FedEx. And I let my neighbor know before hand so that she can call me when she sees the truck pull up in her driveway.
  16. One word SCAMMER....Is she hasn't found anything to scam on you yet....she will!

I met a lady at my craftshow Saturday and she started asking questions about my candles. She knew I wasn't going to be blabbing my trade secrets, so she started to tell me she was an insurance agent for a well known company. I told her I had to go through the phone book and went through each insurance company before I found one that would cover my candles, so it was shocked to hear this company covered candlemakers. She started to say she just did a quote for one of my biggest competitors. And she asked if I knew of her and I said I don't know her personally, but I know of her. She proceeded to say she would offer me a quote because she quoted the other candlemaker $300. a year and she has a storefront. I was blown away and said for 1 million???? I was still leary. She said yeah and started walking off and said I will check out your website and give you a call about a quote. I didn't think much about it because of all the weirdos that hangout at these places. So this morning she emailed me and wanted to know more information about my candles. Like how are they made? What type of wax? Where I get my supplies? All my scents? Blah, Blah, Blah!!! Plus she typed in another insurance company, not the one she said she worked at. I even wrote it down Saturday, because who wouldn't want to save some $$$ on insurance. Now I am thinking she is either a friend or sister or something to this other candlemaker. I would love to lead her on but I don't know what to type back to her. I have even went to check out this insurance company name she gave me and it isn't in the phonebook. No phone number just her email address. Any suggestions on what to type back to her? I would like to have fun with this. santa wink
  17. We just recently moved from one city to another and it was in that city where I made the smelly jellies using my tap water. Our tap water did have chlorine and flouride added to it and after a couple of months the smelly jellies did mold. Our city water supply was so good there that when we went to have our water tested to install a below ground pool they said we didn't need to add anything but chlorine to our water. That is why I only use distilled water now---and of course we have well water now so we use distilled water only.

For the water crystal type, it depends on your tap water supply. If you have good tap water, it has had chorine and floride added to it, therefore, will not mold. I've been selling the water crystal style for years, and only ever had one case of mold, and that was when the customer used well water to "refresh' them. Also, you can add a few drops of "high grade" alchol to help inhibit the mold spores.

Mold grows from dust molecules and mold spores, not the water itself. Therefore, the enviroment that the smelly jellys are in are as important as the type of water used in their making
