  1. First I really like your web site and think your candle line will fit in beautifully . BUT "Though vividly colored candles are beautiful, the dyes are highly toxic and release a number of known carcinogens while burning" things like this ALWAYS turn me OFF. People are not stupid and you are trying to scare them with this statement IF you have proof of this then back it up with references but please don't put statements like that out there unless you have absolute proof.

  2. "So long as no cosmetic representations are made for soap, other than that it cleanses, and no claims are made that it will affect the structure or functions of the body or treat a disease, it is beyond FDA regulation "....

above is straight from the FDA website

  3. The difference here is between BAGS and plastic WRAP. If you put your soap or tarts into a BAG then you should use PolyPRO. Most plastic wraps now use

low density polyethylene and it doesn't seem to affect the scents.

If MOST people are doing it then it must be working. ... sorry don't know why this is underlined.

  4. It would be easier to give you opinions if I could see your perfume line, the names etc. It's really difficult to give advice when you are flying blind. I like the name Greek Lover but you could upscale it to Grecian Goddess ? I don't think there would be a problem with offering the candles with the perfumes if you have a classy container? again difficult without seeing the products etc.

As a shop owner it wouldn't turn me off to see a slightly different line being offered by you on the same web page. It might get you more business.

  5. I am more than happy to reply to specific questions. If the poster had asked about making a certain kind of decorative candle I would have been happy to share...but to go into how to make every kind of gel candle ( and each has a bit different process) would be very time consuming and the poster didn't ask. That's why I offered the PM . I'm more than happy to share my process etc to any specific question...or to reply to PM's .

  6. I struggled with the same thing at first...it is difficult to see the tops of those clamshells. Now I use a very good light and something similar to this:http://www.fonduepots.com/fondue-pots/electric-fondue-pots/chocolatiereelectricchocolatemeltingpot.cfm

You can find them a lot cheaper than this one...Mine is blue and only cost 9.99 but it is worth its weight in ...clamshells ! Set it on low, take the pot and fill it from your Presto , make sure it's cool enough to pour into the clamshells. The only time I get a spill now is if I get distracted ... HTH

  7. Hi everyone! Hope everyone had a happy new year :) I am trying to get into gel candle making and bought one of those kits yesterday. I made some pretty nice basic looking candles (nothing inside)... How long does it take to actually become good enough to make crafty looking candles? I was walking through the fleamarket the other day and saw someone who had put little football helmets in his candles, which I thought looked really cool which gave me the idea. What do you have to do to the objects in order to put them in the candle where they will not burn?

Do your basic research, learn about polarity and fragrance oils etc. Then it really depends on your talent and your patience. If you really think your candle out and then go slowly you can create a fairly decent candle relatively quickly.

My advice is do not use anything that will burn ... so no plastic, no food... shells can also burn. They will soak up the gel ... so if you use shells make sure you crimp your wick above them.

I have made gel candles for over 10 years and still sell them. Used to moderate a gel candle forum and am happy to help you. Just PM me if you'd like some help without sarcasm or a "whose is bigger" contest.

  8. melting time...I use the same 1" per hour rule. It will make a difference if you are using a lower density gel (mp versus hp) so if you want to know how the candle will burn with mp you will have to retest. As with other candles, the weight of the fo will also make a difference in how the candle burns, blueberry is a heavier fragrance than pecan and you are only using 2 wicks there... I always use 3 wicks, gets me a more even burn.

It will also make a difference in how many embeds you are using, etc. etc. Lots of variables with pie candles. that said, most people buy them because of their looks, smell and not necessarily how they burn.

So once again it really comes down to ... testing :cheesy2:

  9. IMO charging more than actual shipping costs is just plain WRONG. It's like lying to me. if you want a surcharge then tell me you have a surcharge.

In this day and age there is no reason not to be able to tell exact shipping costs. I charge my customers exact shipping ONLY, if I can do it so can a larger supplier. I don't like being ripped off in shipping and just don't do business with companies who do this.

Love to know the name of this company.

I will not do business with a jewelry supplier .. Rings N Things, because of this very thing. They tried to rip me off for 11.95 when actual shipping was 1.98 ... that is unconscionable to me. I DID get a full refund for shipping charges I paid after filing complaints alll over and telling them so.... but i will never do business with them again.

  10. if they have plastic around them you can take very fine sandpaper and go around them..hold a sheet of sandpaper in your hand and rotate the bottom of the lid in one direction. If the problem is at the very bottom of the lid you could also shave a bit of the plastic off using a very sharp craft knife.

  11. you have to educate your customers ... if you have a website you should have somewhere on there what to expect out of the different types of candles etc. It always helps to be able to point your customers to that information, your policies etc. You can do that nicely and then when people like this read it they can see for themselves how ridiculous it is to expect any throw from a votive candle. While we know about waxes, wicks, containers vs pillars etc. the average person is totally ignorant.
