  1. Think it was me your thinking of! Anyway yes i did have the problem of it not putting in paragraphs and it drove me nuts!!! Anyway i fixed it by going to the member control panel and changing the settings for posting msgs! There's one right near the end which is the type of type box you use. Anyway mine was on the WYSIWYG type so i changed it to the very simplest it and voila!!! I got me my paragraphs!!!!! Hope that helps (there's more info on it in the board usage thread under paragraphs
  2. If you're using 6.6 oz of wax (in weight ounces), then its whatever 8% is of 6.6 oz. (which is 6.6 times by 0.08. This gives 0.528 oz (in weight).
  3. Hi everyone. I was wandering if you could help me out. I wanted some nice very bright purple chunks, which looked just liked the flowers violets. Anyway i used a dye disc labelled violet, it looked purply, but when i came to pour the chunks it was blue!!! Anyway i wandered if maybe it may just look that colour when melted and turn purple (it's happened with other dye discs). Anyway a few hours later the chunks were still blue, so i decided to remelt them and make them purple. (I'd already made a load of blue chunks earlier!!!!). Anyway i added some red dye, but all i got was a dirty off purple colour, so i tried mixing in different amounts of red and blue, but the colour never really looked very bright and distincly purple. I tried some purple liquid dye i had, but that itself was an off purple, kinda reddy burgundy colour!!! Anyway i then tried my lavender powder dye, but i used too much and though the colour was much brighter and more of a proper violet, it was too dark!!!! So i added loads of extra wax to lessen the colour, but it was still very dark and now i've got loads more chunks than i wanted!!!!!! Anyway i much prefer using dye chips/blocks and was therefore wandering if anyone could recommend a great violety vivid purple!!!!! I've tried the reddi glo dye colours, and they're not quite right. Some websites have a great colour shown on the page, but from experience i've found they very rarely match the dye itself!!! Thanks in advance.
  4. To be honest it's hard to think of fragrances i specifically want, i usually just see what there is and choose from that!!! I do love the aniseed smell though, and lily of the valley and spearmint!!!!
  5. There are three places i've found have the best wax. They work out quite cheap if you buy in large quanities. The cheapest (and i find it's good wax) is http://www.craftwiseuk.com/acatalog/candlemaking.html They have free shipping and sell the wax in 1kg, 5kg or 25kg. They don't always have the 25kg one in stock, but it's well worth waiting for it for the price. This website has quite cheap and good wax http://www.candelights.co.uk/ i find it's great for a mottled look. Finally the best for blended wax is http://www.4candles.co.uk/wax/paraffin_wax.html There wax is a little more expensive, but very nice wax it is!!!! Hope that helps
  6. Ok, i'll try the microcrystallin wax and see, but what about stearin / vybar? How much is too much?? I would like a bit of cold throw, so can smell it when your near it, but just not so it makes the room smell!!! Thanks everyone!!!
  7. Would a harder like microcrystalline be ok? I use that for my chunks at 1%, but i still quite a strong cold throw w those, should i use more than 1% (about 1 tsp / lb). As for the paragraphs, i've tried several different things, including double enter. It's weird cause when i type it it's all nicely in paragraphs with spaces in between, just not when i post, makes it much harder to read i think!!!!
  8. HiI had this very same problem a while ago and asked about it on here. I got some great responses which generally worked really well. Hopefully this link will work http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40060 Hope it works for you too!
  9. Hi, i know the feeling, i often have the same problem. I find that i use a pair of pliers and squeeze the top really hard (north to south orientation). I then do it again to the other half, (say east to west orientation) and then again to the first half. I then use the pliers to straighten it out, and usually (as you've done it enough on the both sides) the wick holds (well unless u pull it too hard!!!!). The wick sustainer is never beutifully straight, but i find it does it's job!!!!Anyway hope that makes sense!!!
  10. Hi EveryoneBeen thinking a lot lately about how much FO to use and how much to make my candles smell. Anyway i came to the conclusion (w a lil help from my friends) that i want the candle to not be v strong when its not lit, so u actually have to b near the candle when its not lit to smell it. My reason for this is cause i make generally decorative pillars, which ppl are more likely to have on display and so won't want the room to always smell of the candle! I know when it has, i've got sick of the smell!!!!Anyway, i do, however, want it to be quite strong when it's burning, as that'll be when the customers want to smell the candle. Anyway i therefore am wandering how to get relatively low cold throw but v good hot throw. I know it changes with the type of FO, but generally, how can one achieve this???Anyway i've often read on here that vybar allows more scent to be mixed in with the wax, but that too much vybar can lock the scent. Therefore what i'm wandering is, will this lock the scent just when it's not lit, ie give me what i want of a low cold throw scent, and unlock the scent when u burn it, ie giving me a very good hot throw scent???I just use straight paraffin, i know stearin can also be used to improve the FO capacity of wax, but will that give me the effect im after???Thanks in advance(and a special thanks to raggedy dani for being such a cook candle tech member and sending me lots of wick samples to try!!!!) (Sorry for the mess of paragraphs, i can't seem to get the text to start a new line!!!!!)
  11. How big are your floating candles? I've tried adding vybar and using a smaller wick to get them to last longer, but even then it's only about just over 3 hours. I usually use bout 150grams of wax to make 3 floating candles. I use just straight paraffin, we don't have all the different sorts in the UKi lke you get in the US.Thanks
  12. Hmm, just watch out though, as soon as you start buying in bulk more, you can stuck for custom charges. Anything over £18 can be done (less likely with USPS tho) for import duty, which isn't a lot really!!! I got stuck a few times paying like a £10 import duty and another £10 handling fee!!!! So you gotta be careful, cause take that into account and you don't save at all!!!!!
  13. Hi Everyone. I've been testing my floating candles, the average size ones, and they generally last 2 - 3 hours. I used straight paraffin with vybar in. Does this burn sound about right for floaters? I know theres a way of working out how long a candle should burn, based on weight etc, but floaters are different, as obviously all the wax can't burn!!!! Also what do people find customers want out of hot throw strength? Just thinking cause we have floaters at meals, so wouldn't want it too smell too much whilst we were eating. I'm thinking 1oz per pound may be too much? What do people find customers want?
  14. Well i make mainly colourful chunky candles and colourful layers. Most people i know i've sold them too have but them on display. I can understand people wanting to smell them, but how much do people find they want the smell to spread, when lit and not lit. I bought a candle once and it smelt the entire room which was nice at first, but it lasted so long i got really sick of the smell, so i suppose if customers are say going to have them mainly on display, how much do you think they'd want to smell them? Just wandering what people have found customers are after?
  15. What sort of candles is the 1 oz per pound ratio for? I make mainly decorative pillars, so for them to make the whole house smell when they're not even burning isn't the way to go. I'm wandering what people have found customers want for pillars. I can understand people making container candles / tea lights and votives to be very strongly scented, people generally buy these too burn, but my sort of candle's like i said are more decorative sort, the sort you wanted (hopefully!!!!) want to burn straight away. It's not i'm trying to cut corners, it's more that i want to get the balance right between the right level of scent and the right price. Basically it's the buyers price of the candle that will go up with the extra scent, so i want to get it right, so what have people, who make similar candles found the customers wanted?
  16. If you don't expect a votive to give as much of a hot throw, what do you expect it to give? What level of hot throw would make you decide whether you had enough FO??I'm trying to work out how much FO to use to get a good scent throw, but without using so much FO that it mkes the candle too expensive (like for me 1oz / pound would be far too much price wise)
  17. A perfect buring pillar should burn all the wax nearly, with a very small rim on the side so it doesn't overflow. If they create a tunnel then it probably means the wick is too small. Though i've been testing my pillars for ages and there's soooo many variables that you can't always get it perfect!!! Oh well, we can all aspire to perfection. If it only leaves a small bit of unmelted wax thats ok really, better than it overflowing!
  18. I sent both chunks and ovepour, but i usally put more scent in the chunks than the over pour. My reason for this is, i use polcarbonate moulds which can be damaged by too much scent. Therefore i use less in the overpour but more in the chunks to help protect my moulds!!!!Doesn't make any difference if you use metal moulds though.
  19. Hey, thanks i'll check those outThanks
  20. I suppose it depends in what your after really. I find i much prefer the simpler scents, sometimes the more complex ones are a little too much of a good thing. I like to try them all though (well i keep bakery scents far away!!!). In fact i plan on working my way through as many scents and suppliers as possible, but i have to get through all the hundreds of scents i've already accumulated first!!!!!
  21. I think i'm going to disagree with most people on here! I love the florals, they're my fave, along with the fruity ones and spicy ones, i love lavender and cinnamon and rose!!! What i hate though are the food /bakery ones, like anything with pie/cake/cookie in it!! LOL, think they're just far too sweet and heavy for me. Got a (free) sample of blackberry jam butte cookies today (daystar) and tried it out, only used like 1% and now my entire house smells of it (my mum smelt it as soon as she came in the door!!!!!!!) It's not bad, but i can't say i'm too keen, but then i'm glad i didn't use anymore!!!!
  22. Maybe if we spread the word about this website on here, more people will go and recommend FOs on the website. Need to try out my new FOs then i can write reviews of them too! That other website listed doesn't seem to be working???
  23. Hi, Just got my FOs from Day Star, Just over a week it took to the UK which is great, 12 2oz bottles only $9.50 postage, air mail! Very reasonable and they smell fantastic!!!!! As for forwarders, i know some people on this site in the US can get small orders for you and then send them to you. Only recently tried one lady and waiting to receive the items, but was only about a week ago i paid!Anyway could post on the general board for that sort of thing. Also NG does ship to UK, I placed my order with them yesterday!!!! Very reasonable shipping and a good choice of options.Peak never seem to repsond to my emails tho!!!!!
  24. Hi everyoneAs well as my candle making i also love making bead jewellery, and have only just noticed this general craft msg board!!! Anyway just wandering if any of you know any good suppliers of seed beads?>Thanks
  25. Hi, not sure if any of you have come across the website before, i've recently found it and have been meaning to mention it, but kept on forgetting. Its very helpful for finding scents and supplies in the US and it has some reviews of scents too.http://www.scentforum.com/
