  1. I have gone to making candles in glass for my own use but I have had severe problems with wicks choking with mushrooming or having sooting problems from too high a flame. I use Parafin wax, either 1343A or 4625, or a mix of the 2. I have tried wire core wick and HTP wick in various sizes. My best results were with the smaller wire core wicks with the wires removed, but that gives me trouble when the wax cools and contracts. I even tried paper core wick which was a total disaster. I need help.

  2. A while back, I made 2 candles for a woman that worked in a thrift shop. In return she gave me a load of partially burned candles burned by people that knew nothing about how to burn a candle. I am big on recycling wax rather than allowing it to be dumped. I am nearing the end of the load and have found that some of the wax was garbage while some was very good. All this was almost a waste of time from a learning aspect. Total inconsistency. I have found some strange things in some candles. One is pictured here. The tab is not at the bottom of the wick. Is this intentional, or a screwup?

  3. I take a 3lb coffee can and put 4 wicks in it and pour excess wax in there. works well. Lots of different scents but it is a wonderful candle for when you are sitting outside.

This would work, but I would use the equivalent size glass container. I would have to decide how large a wick to use.

  4. I recycle them into tarts only. Wicking is hard enough when using premium wax, I dont' want to give myself further headaches by trying to wick an unknown wax. Also by doing this I use very strong scents and I also only use up to 2% FO in it. Again, without knowing the wax or scent load, I don't want weeping tarts, but I also don't want to waste good FO if it's crappy wax either.

So, that's how I do it...

Sounds good, but I don't do tarts.

  5. I keep coming up with stubs of candles, some mutilated by those who don't have a clue how to burn a candle. some are high quality candles, some are junk. I try to recast them so they won't go to waste. Main problem is wicking them is pure guesswork, When it doesn't work, it's a big problem. No, I don't sell these so it is my problem and nobody elses. Does anyone else recycle wax? Any thoughts?

  6. I picked up a block of unknown wax and tested a small chunk. It burned beautifully. I made a small pillar with a little red dye and a max charge of cinnamon and no additives. Both the F.O. and the dye separated out. I remelted the pillar and added some UA. It turned out good but I haven't burned it yet.
