  1. "Heavy" means the weight of the FO. If you bought all of your FO bottles new, and they were packaged by weight, you may have noticed that many of the fill lines (where the liquid reached the top of the bottle) were at different heights. The ones that didn't look filled all the way are heavier than the ones which are filled right to the top. There's not really a list, but generally, vanillas, cinnamons, patchoulis, some roses, and FO's containing high amounts of those four will be heavier than, say, your average lemon drop or sweetgrass.
  2. I've got a feather palm and pillar soy sitting on the piano. Interesting effects. Looks sort of like a combination of starburst palm and sleek fur.
  3. I had one lady ask if I did homeschooling lessons. I thought it would make an interesting science project to view for kids, personally. I think you could do it in such a way that you didn't give away any trade secrets. Just set it up to have most things in unmarked containers beforehand. Have the wax sitting in a double boiler when they get there so they don't see which kind you use. Pre-wick your containers. Preweigh your FO so they don't see the original bottle. And then charge what you think it would be worth to see it (like one of those "continuing education" classes at the community college).
  4. Second burn; 2.75 hours. A bit of unpleasantness with the sidewall (which became more lopsided this burn). Not a break, but close. CSN 14 is definitely too big. I'm going to give a couple of LX's a go, see what that does. Good luck with all your testing, everyone!
  5. I agree. Whenever a "new" product comes out there are always very helpful and forthcoming testers here. I've enjoyed being able to join in on this one, even just a little bit. This is a great crowd. Of course six months from now (closer to Christmas) this site will have 6 posts a day saying, "Help! CS Palm wax! How to wick?!?" "CS Palm Wax - what am I doing wrong?" "CS Palm wax newbie - did a search, couldn't find anything!!!" The tester I lit last night (3 hour initial test) with the FO did a lot better than the previous unscented one. Beautiful "lantern" effect within 90 minutes, 5/8" shell by 3 hours (no pronounced thick side/thin side like the unscented one). Great scent throw. Slight mushroom, but nothing huge. I think the CSN 14 might actually be a little big for this one. Either FO helps these candles burn (or that particular FO helps them burn), or my purple dye inhibits it. I'm going to make an unscented dye-free one next and see how that burns.
  6. Good answer here. To the lopsided burn, I remembered this evening reading something here about "twisting" wicks, and now that CS has the CSN series raw on spools, this should be an interesting experiment.
  7. Fourth burn (5 hours); some improvement. Thick wall is now at 5/8", thin wall at 3/8". Tunnel is just a hair under 2" deep. No increase in flickering or outside wall temperature (around body temp by the end of 5 hours). The candle still looks sort of like one of those little floor spot lamps that you put behind the couch to illuminate wall art, though. Next up: 3x4.5" palm pillar, honey colored, scented with Vanilla Bean Supreme and Cranberry Spice, CSN 14 wick.
  8. Update: third burn - 5 hours. Melt pool is still somewhat lopsided, but in a consistent manner; 3/4" on the thick side and 1/2" on the thin, all the way down. Tunnel is about 1.25" deep. Some flickering, but not too much. Will start a fragranced palm pillar tonight after the kids go to bed, and maybe try this unscented one for another 4-5 hour burn just to see what happens before I melt it back down into something else.
  9. Hm. That is good info, too. I also found this one from the old board, which seems to indicate that I'm putting too much emphasis on elevation. Hm.
  10. Yes, that thread isn't there. It's here. Thanks for the input. I'm surprised there isn't more on this topic, actually. Even Google has precious little.
  11. Bumping this to see if anyone else has input. I found only four posts related to the search "altitude + burn" and the new CS palm burn tests have my interest piqued. Three to four hour burn tests on my CS palm pillar have not netted me nearly the same consumption rate as others I've seen recently here. I am at around 1,500 feet above sea level and can't think of any other reason for it. I'm even burning an unscented pillar, which I assumed would have a higher consumption rate in general since there's no FO to consume. Any thoughts?
  12. I'm testing a CS Starburst blend in a 3"x4.5" pillar now. Unscented, purple liquid dye, CSN 14 wick. First burn was 3 hours, it tunnelled about 1/2", melt pool was about the size of a silver dollar, slightly off-center due to the curling nature of the CSN. Second burn was 4 hours, tunnelling went down a little further, melt pool about another 1/8" out. There's still a good 1/2" shell all around, 1 hour into the third burn. The outside of the candle was just slightly warmer than room temperature after the 4 hour burn. I'm ambivalent about the wicks. They seem to curl like the htp and cd series, providing a somewhat lopsided melt pool. I might break out some lx-20-somethings and see if that's any better.
  13. You are mixing FO with the base, right? I thought Gellumination's base was pretty good at ~2:1 (base:FO), but they wouldn't tell me what was in the base when I asked so I don't know if it's straight DPG or isopropyl mystrate or what.
  14. For a 3" round cylinder it's about 3.5oz per inch of mold. or volume=Pi * radius * height
  15. Now I'm really sad... The only Peach I've ever bought was from the former Bark Hollow Mall. It would make your eyes bleed with Peach scent. Of course they don't sell FO's any more...
  16. I haven't tried it with FO yet. Love the look though. Even unscented they are stunning. Maybe this is why M-i-a-b-e-l-l-a used a soy/palm blend rather than pure palm?
  17. I found all of these to be very good throwers as well. One 4oz candle I made with Heather Countryside (415, 6% FO) about knocked me out the door of my 600 sqft front room! Caramel Apple is also good, as well as their Amber Romance, Estee Lauder Pleasures, Irish Cream Delight, Mediterranean Fig, Night Blooming Jasmine, and Spiced Cranberry. Fresh Cut Roses is also very strong (although not my preference in a scent). I did like the cold throw of the Cool Water but couldn't get a very strong hot throw out of it.
  18. Yeah, but see if there's ever a nuclear attack your house will look like an episdoe of Jericho.
  19. If the wick is completely raw you have to prime the wick with something before you light it or it will not burn. Wax works well, but even olive oil will do in a pinch.
  20. I have stayed away from Pyrex since they started being manufactured by World Kitchen out of soda-lime glass instead of the original borosilicate. The new Pyrex stuff seems more prone to exploding on impact and temperature change now.
