  1. The tart burning we use is rated 18Watt, which seems consistant with other tart melters I have seen.
  2. Made a first batch of tarts this weekend and wow do they seem stong. Used Ecosoya PB and a some CB with 1 oz/pp of several FO and they came out great with no frosting and a great cold scent. We couldn't wait so we popped one (a fluted tart about 3/4 oz) in the electric tart warmer about 24 hours after we made it using a Best Friends from NG. Drove us out of the house it was so strong. After curing, will the tarts release the fragrance a little more gradually or will they get even stronger?
  3. I would stongly suggest standardizing a proceedure for testing scent throw. We have standardized on using 4 oz tins as the testers with 1 oz pp FO. We test burn in a couple of enclosed 8x10 room in a heavy metal tray (for safety reasons) and check the smell every half hour. This gives us a basis to judge and compare scent throw when we either change an aspect of a candle or to compare FO throws. As you test a bunch of FO with a standard proceedure, you'll get a feel for what has strong/weak throw. I have noted that a lot of candle makers go for knock you out of the room throws. However, there are alot of FO that are much better as a subtle smell vs one that tends to cling to you. IMHO a good scent is one that greets you and welcomes you in with a gentle reminder, not one that knocks you back two feet when you open the door.
  4. I have continued to test adding FO at different temperatures (170*, 145* and 120*) using a FO and FO/EO combination. I have made the following observations: The candles made adding FO at 170* do not have as strong a throw as the candles with FO added at 145* and 120* after 48 hours. The 145* FO candle and the 120* FO candle have about the same hot and cold throw after 48 hours. The 170* FO candle has equal or better hot and cold throw than the 120* of 145* FO candle after curing for a week. Adding a EO/FO blend at 170* tends to lose the EO scent, even after a week of curing. The EO/FO added at 145* or 120* had a stronger scent even after a week of curing.
  5. Like IDA above, I use pure and have tried NG Best friends adding FO at 170*. I didn't get much hot or cold throw after 48 hours. However, after a week of curing, both the hot and cold throw became much stonger.
  6. After you mentioned about adding FO @140-150, I went and checked out two tins I first made where I added FO at 145*. They have much better cold throw than the current batch with FO added at 170-175*, so you may be on to something there with this wax. Anyone with experience unsing additives in this soy product?
  7. We have been experimenting for a while using Ecosoya CB-Pure in 4oz tins. Heating to 175*, adding soy based chip color until well mixed and then adding 6% (1 oz pp) FO at about 170*. We do not keep the wax on the heat while adding the FO and the temp drops to about 155-160 after mixing well. Wicks are an ECO 8. I've gotten to the point that I can get some very nice looking candles with very smooth frost free tops, but the hot and cold scent are not great. Placing candle in a small 6X8 room to check hot throw after 2-4 days and can barely detect the scent. We have tried about 8 FO from JS, Peaks and WSP that are reported (on this forum) to be some great throwers in soy, so I don't believe it is a weak FO. Should we try adding FO at another temp? Adding BW, universal additive, or other? Mixing the wax with another product for a blend? Any other suggestions before we abandon this wax?
  8. Using ecosoya CB Pure with a very small smount of soy based dye and 1 oz/ lb FO into a 4 oz tin. Using ECO wicks No. 6 and No 8. Both the No. 6 and No 8 wicks give a good melt pool and scent throw but both wicks tends to drown out after a couple hours of use. The flame never goes out, but gets very dim. I typically need to pour off a little wax to keep it going. Sides of the container are somewhat clean with little tunneling on the side away from the curl of the wick. Obviously the No. 8 does a better job of cleaning the sides than the 6. I would think the eco 10 would be a torch in this size candle. Is there any better wicks to try in a pure soy wax? (I was thinking of tring the HTP wicks) Thanks
