  1. I am considering testing this wax and have a couple of questions. What is this wax's afterburn like? I have tried a couple of soy waxes that form a white line at the bottom of the melt pool when it hardens back up. For me, that's just ugly. Is there a way to prevent this, or is it just a characteristic of soy that you can't do anything about? Or is there a soy wax that doesn't do this?

  2. You can make castile-type soap using a high-oleic oil, but castile bars don't have that much going for them apart from mildness. I'd start off with a more conventional soap and experiment later. Regular sunflower wouldn't work for that anyway. It would just be mush unless it was the high-oleic sunflower.

Problem is, you're trying to use a lot of polyunsaturated linoleic oils with no really hard stuff in there, so you have a ways to go to get the recipe balanced out.

I've heard that health food stores often sell palm oil, so maybe you could turn some up and replace the Crisco with that or add even more. Another thing that could help balance the recipe is using olive oil along with the sunflower.

If by any chance you make candles and have some straight soy flakes lying around, that could help too. Depending on the melt point of the soy, you could choose something with a similar profile to represent it in SoapCalc.

Top, is there a book or a website that you would suggest to learn more about oils and their properties and how to balance a recipe out?

  3. I use mylar to line my slab mold and freezer paper for my log, but I just need to get some more mylar for the log!

    Steph

I have only seen mylar on the internet - haven't seen or touched - do you cut and fold it like freezer paper, or do you cut it in pieces like the foam sheets?

  4. I've never heard of foamies or Funky Foam ~ what are they? Molds?

It's a foam sheet used for crafts - I've seen it at Joannes, Hobby Lobby and Walmart. I used it for lining my molds like some other folks on this board have. The Funky Foam brand (I found at Hobby Lobby) did not bleed - the one I used was red in color - I can't testify for any of the other colors. It made my soap look real smooth and was easy to line the mold.

The Foamies brand (Joannes and Walmart) was red and is what bled onto my soap.

Read somewhere on here that some people had some foam sheets that would bleed onto their soap - I thought I searched to see which brand bleeds, but either forgot or didn't get results, so I thought I'd just try this brand. Maybe this will save someone else from spending a couple bucks on the wrong kind! ;)

  5. I used Funky Foam with no issues, but the Hobby Lobby available carried only the 8 x 12 size, my slab mold is 12 1/2 inches long. So I checked out the local Joannes and no Funky Foam, but they did carry Foamies in a 3 foot by 6 foot sheet, and I'm thinking should be ok. Wrong. First pic is what foamies did to my soap. Second and third is after the clean up. It's a goat's milk layered soap, no color on the bottom, TKB's green on the top, along with some ash. Fragranced with cool cucumber. My first attempt at layers and goat milk - I used powdered.

PS Guess what color the foam was :)

  6. Superfat: I did a 4.5% superfat on this recipe because I used full Goat Milk as the flluid and didn't want the extra fat from the milk to interfere with my suds negatively. This way, I got a really creamy lather with a lot of bigger bubbles too, instead of just the creamy by itself. Hope that makes sense!

Does this simply mean to set your superfat % to 4.5 in your lye calculator?

    Thanks

  7. I tried my first OHP the other day and am finally getting my pics up.

This was supposed to be ginger peach, but I realized as I was doing my marbling, I forgot the FO. Oh well... Live and learn

I like the way it came out except the top, but I think if i use my log mold and swirl the top with one of my chopsticks, I may get something I like.:rolleyes2

Looks great to me! Loved the colors.

  8. Again, I'm still using the same ingredients - red palm, coconut, pomace olive, sunflower, canola, castor. This time I did add FO - Mountain sage from GL.

Will the appearance of this soap change as it dries out?

  9. Fantastic looking batch here! Yes, I do agree... the color reminds me of Dial Soap! lol

    Excellent Job!!! :highfive:

    thank you!

Checked your website out - loved your soap! Nice layout, too.

There are some very talented people on this board!

  10. Looking good there! Did you use a fo in this batch?

No FO in this batch - will try that next time.

I did make a batch of OHP yesterday and put some FO in it. It definitely looks different that CP! I'll take photos and post.

This soap making is fun. Think I might have said that before.
