  1. I actually prefer to set up the day/evening before...but I can see not everyone does.

As for the method of peer jurying, I think that is very strange. If the coordinator is unable to determine if products are handmade or imported then they should hire a qualified jury.

I think having a system to filter out imported goods is a must. Unfortunately, this coordinator doesn't seem to be using the best means.

  2. Nature's Garden...also try:

    Pink Sugar- excellant throw

    Blackberry Sage

    Fresh Linen

    Cucumber Melon

Black Cherry Bomb-take it easy this one is way strong. Realistic.

    Red Ruby Grapefruit

    Mullled Cider

Pumpkin Pie-mostly spicey not doesn't smell too bakery.

    Christmas Splendor

    Spiced Cranberry

    Eggnog

All of these throw well for me. With Black Cherry Bomb, less is more.

Stay away from their Nutmeg...it smells like a cheap colonge...nothing like nutmeg.

  3. I don't use the formula / cost (matl) x 2 for wholesale. I take matl + labor + profit (what you need your company to make) = wholesale price. Sometimes you have to "tweak" it for your particular area. There was a good post on this just before the board went down last week. Carole

I base my prices this way also.

  4. Canwax.com I haven't ordered from them myself, but they are the only other supplier I know of in Ontario.

Lynden House International in Edmonton has a good selection of fragrances, prices are too bad.

I order almost all of mine from U.S. suppliers. When you buy in bulk, the savings far outweights the shipping costs.

  5. I haven't used Candlewic's two part either. I use Peak's and have used Pourette's in the past. I don't recall hearing many complaints if any from the two part as far as reliability goes.

With Peak's, the only one I have had discolour at an alarming rate was "Pink Sugar" (Cotton Candy). Most will eventually discolour even with UV inhibitor, it just buys you more time. How old are the discoloured candles?

  6. where can I find this mold?

    Thanks

The past few weeks I have been on a quest for Lotus molds. There don't seem to be many out there. A few water lilies, but even fewer lotus flowers. Where did you find the picture...any chance it might have a clue as to were to start hunting?

  7. Most paraffin waxes have a flash point somewhere around 395 degrees F. If you heat the wax to this temp. it will burst into flames, possibly explode. For most applications, you want to pour the wax between 150 deg. and 195 deg, depending on the desired effect you are wanting to create. This is well below the flash point of the wax.

FO's have much lower flash points than wax. However, it is safe to add an FO with a flash point of 160 degrees to a pot of wax that is 185 degrees. But do not heat the same FO on its own to 160 degrees or it will burst into flames.

For starting out, get yourself a double boiler and melt your wax on the top. Keep bottom water topped up. This way you cannot heat your wax beyond 212 degrees (temp of boiling water). This is the safest way to melt and use wax, especially when you are just starting out.

Read as much as you can here before you start... you can save yourself a ton of money and time by doing as much research as possible. Consider getting a kit from one of the suppliers..ie: Peak.

  8. If the guy is telling the truth which I have no clue if he is or not. He is looking for something to blame. I do know from personal experience that when face with major illness we look for the reason why we are sick or why a loved one has this happen to them. When a scientific reason can not be found then we tend to blame what we think might be the cause without any real evidence. Since the propaganda has been being spread about paraffin that is what he is blaming.

    Well said Vicky....

  9. Well I would demand a retraction from the newspaper (since I work for one) and would inform them to look at the National Candle Association for starters (specifically the Q&A section). I believe any candle will soot black if not wicked properly. Now they aren't going to want to hear that, but a lot of us are sick of the myths that are floating out there. Not every soy maker is going to do that and it would be nice if they could be educated before they made a candle (some are though!) and that they would participate in helping to stop the myths and fallacies. But then we all want a perfect world don't we?

Anyway, as a responsible candlemaker, it's also up to you to oh help fight the battle too ;)

And what a shame it is that others put down other products (particularly ones used to make those other products as part of the processing), but it happens all the time. People actually think they aren't necessarily doing an injustice you know ... kinda like the people who practice religion on Sundays only by going to church and thinking one hour is enough.

I gotta get off this soap box lol! I hate this debate a lot and I'm definitely not unbiased on this topic.

I agree entirely with Scented. We candlemaker's need to work to bring about reality based information, and to deliver it to the media each time we run accross a situation like the one Ingrid has.
