I've tested over 15 wicks and have fallen in love with the LX and premier wicks. They haven't left any soot on the jars and burn wonderfully. Testing the RRD wicks now.

Hi, which wax or blend have you found works great with LX? I got a sample pack for trying in just paraffin, but would be good to know how it performs in soy as well.

I've used ECO 4 and 10's in a 464/4630 blend, with ok results. The throw's not spectacular, but there's no sooting.

--> With eco 4 in an 8oz straight sided jar, FO 8%, i got a full melt pool in the first 2 hours burn.

  2. @Dorothy Mantooth  which wicks did you use? yh i just burnt the single candle i made with this blend using an eco wick and i Like the results. I didn't even let it 'cure'. I burnt it on the 2nd day after pouring and the HT was there.

i find paraffin a little annoying to work with compared to soy and the top of my candle didn't dry smooth initially but it was easily fixed with a heat gun. however after each burn the top of the candle dries perfectly. So I think i'm gna stick with this one :)

are you back to using 100% 464?

I did one batch of 4630 - without fragrance, testing wicks.  I only let it cure two days before testing.

My notes don't appear to be great, but I've marked down some good and bad. I don't have listed what made them good or bad to me, but normally if the wick dies out I mark it as bad. Overall I wasn't sold on the look of the wax. it wasn't the creamy soy that I've been working with.

My intention was to test the "good" wicks with FO.  (I know the debate here of testing without FO.)

    I have some 464/4630 blend I haven't burned yet.

    GOOD

    8oz tin - CD10

    8oz tin - HTP 83

    4oz tin -  CD8

Hey Dorothy, have you burned the 464/4630 blends yet? How did it go ?

I was using a jar that is about 3 1/8 in diameter and used a HTP 105 wick and the scent was from Bitter Creek. I let it cure for 2 days. I'm currently testing the Q210 and will move onto the Q220 and Q230 soon.

oh wow you got strong HT with straight gb 464 after 2 days? the fO must be very strong. what happened to letting it cure for 7-14 days. i' just got the 210 , should have it by this weekend:) ; how are you liking it?

Did the ECO 4 wick tunnel, it seems very small for a 8oz jar. Have you tried CD wicks or other series ?

hi moonstar, the short answer is NO. no tunneling with the ECO4. The ECO4 did much better than ECO10 after the first 2 hours burn so that's the one i've been testinG. so far i've burned the candle WITH ECO4 5 times for a total of about 14 hours now. the first time i got some HT was after 18days of curing. it's decent but not strong enough for what i intended.

what are some FO's you know are very strong in gb464. I think i should try some that are tried and tested. if i do and it's still not strong enough for what I want, it might have to add some paraffin.

If you put some of that wax from the candle in a waxtart  melter can you smell it?

no i haven't tried this yet, since i eventually got some HT, just not as strong as i think is marketable

Are you getting a cold throw at all? I haven't used this exact scent but used another fragrance oil from another company and had a great hot throw and I was using 8% fragrance for that one and added no colour.   I added my scent at around 155-165 and poured at your temp and stir for about 2 minutes.  Try lower your fragrance load as that is the only thing I can think of.  I used straight 464 as well.

Hii! yes the cold throw for this one was very store, i was almost certain the candle would be a hit! . but alas I lit it and was super disappointed.

Which FO and from which company are you referring to? also what wick/jar combination were you using when you got good HT? and how long did you let it cure for ?

Which products are you testing these days?

OMG ... this is like Pandora's box! hahaha do you use a commercial parasoy , or make your own? I tried mixing GW464 with IGI 4630 and found it gave me weird tops. I did soy70/30 parrafin then just 90/10 ... then even did 60/30/10 coconut to try and smooth it out. I wasn't happy with any of them ...

hey @obsessed were the weird tops the only problem you had wit hate 464/4630 blend?  how was the hot throw and which wicks did you use?

BTW did you try using a heat gun, i find that I have to heat  almost all my tops which i pour around 135, though I've been using 100% soy. i spoke to someone who uses 100% 464 and consistently gets smooth tops from pouring at 145. that may or may not help since you're using a parasoy blend.

  8. @jbradshaw im taking your tip and pouring close to 145 next batch! fingers crossed for beautiful tops. I also always stir for at least 2 minutes timed with a spoon. maybe i'll stir more.

    I think the max. f/o for GW464 is 9% ... it's the GW444 that is 11% as far as I'm aware.

Now, that's amazing though ... the 464 will actually hold 12% without seeping?  The thing that concerns me the most with using more f/o than recommended is fire hazard.

@birdcharmin the info section for GB 464, CS actually says the max fragrance is 12% or 2oz/lb. so that's what I used as a guideline.

but absolutely noted! i'll go much lower next time seeing as 12% is counter productive and expensive.

  9. I loveeee mistletoe! the name alone had me all giddy and reminiscent of my favorite time of the year. I just ordered white birch, fig tree, toasted pumpkin and pomegranate cider. can't wait to smell them. I wish i had read the forum early enough, I would've added a bottle of xmas hearth too.

  10. @jbradshaw did your top automatically dry this smooth after one pour with gb464, or did you have to use a heat gun? I've made a few candles and this has never happened for me.

Also with  the separation, I burned a gb464 multiple times, it would always cool with a greater like top until a few days ago. it had burned for a cumulative total of 32hours and i noticed that when it cooled down, the top was completely smooth. I also noticed some tiny beads of oil on top. First time it's happening. Not sure how to explain it.

I ordered some 4630, htp, and cd to test. I still have zinc sampler.  I'm doing 4oz and 8oz tins. I've got two FO in quantities to test across those three wicks in those two size containers- peony or tobacco cherry. Do you suggest 8%?  Ultimately I'd love a strong smeller. I've tested these FO in my soy and I like the ht at 10%. I read that paraffin throws better than soy so I assume I can do 6 or 8%. I've also not been able to get a 8oz candle to burn for a zillion hours like most people say about soy. I think the best I did was 22hours. I've been weighing between burns and keeping track to compare to 4630. Always appreciate the guidance.

Hi, how did you get along with the wicking for 4630? What was it like on it own? How long did you let it cure before burning? Which wicks worked for it when it was just paraffin? Did you also try a parasoy blend, with which wicks and FO?  How was he HT in both?

I just got some 4630 and will start testing soon. Just wanted to have kind of a base before setting out.

Wanted to add that I made a soy candle from gb464 FO 2ozpp. 8oz glass jar. It's has burned for over 30hrs and still has a couple more hours to go. Eco 4 provided great HT in this candle. Eco 10 has no HT at all.

    thanks

? it is very challenging - it took me years to perfect it but it's what I started with so I don't know any different really

I could pour hotter with 135 and 464 but the throw wasn't there for me

after testing 415 I was blown away by the throw but could not get it to look decent for a vey very long long time

playing with parasoy I'm not going to lie - I LOVE heating and pouring and I'm done!

Beautiful candles everytime but my challenge is still finding the perfect wick that doesn't leave black soot all over the jar, that's a whole new world for me even though soy can do that also you don't see it so much unless you use the lid to extinguish (guilty) or burn in a drafty area (again guilty) lol

what type of soy are you experimenting with?

    Hi,

which parasoy blend were you using and were you able to find a wick that was satisfactory in terms of burning clean with good HT? I'm currently testing some gb464 and got ig4360 to blend it with.

    thanks.

  13. Hi guys, i just joined the forum and I'm very new to the candle making scene.

I have been reading & testing for the past couple of months. I saw that some people really like the raspberry sangria fragrance from CS which is supposedly great for soy. I made two candles  with it of the following specs::  gb 464, 12% FO, heated wax to 185 and added fragrance around 185, poured at 135, cured for 12 days. One container had ECO4 and the other had ECO10. both are 8oz straight sided tumblers. great CT, no hot throw.

what could be the  problem here? the wick? i realize 12%FO is a little high , but i've gotten great HT with that in an identical setup using ECO4, gb464 and a gardenia FO.

    thanks for your suggestions

  14. Hi everyone!  i just joined the forum and I'm very new to the candle making scene.

I have been testing for months and am having difficulties working with raspberry sangria from CS. I made two candles  with it of the following specs:: gb 464, 12% FO, heated wax to 185 and added fragrance around 185, poured at 135, cured for 12 days. One container had eco4 and the other had eco10. both are 8oz straight sided tumblers. great cold throw, ZERO hot throw.

How did you get the raspberry sangria scent to throw so well when lit ?

I saw that some members love raspberry sangria  so if anyone has useful tips for making candles with it in  gb444, gb464, igi4630, or a blend of any of these three, please share:)

    thank you!
