FB has a scent named Death and Decay. Haven't bought any but am curious what is smells like.

The funkiest FO I ever came across was FM's Maple Syrup. Smelled like cologne. Didn't smell any better in my candles either. Sort of a stomach turner type of fragrance. Ick!

Death & decay is TOOOOO quirky! Oh my Lord!  I was considering maple syrup this morning. Guess I better not get it from FB! I love the way we can learn from each other's experience on this forum (and save time & money)!

Oh Belinda!!! Don't get rid of your dirt! :) Get some Cucumber from somewhere and get Tomato Leaf from BCN and do chunks and call it Spring Garden...oh it will smell divine...I am going to make this blend myself and sell it this Spring. The Tomato Leaf from BCN smells exactly like when you touch a tomato leaf and smell your fingers...oh love that smell!

I have also read where people have made soap with this scent for hunters in the Fall to disguise their human scent and people have said it works great.:)

Chevril...I would also have to say dirt. It is definitely a quirky scent and the looks on people's faces when you tell them that you carry a scent called dirt is priceless! :) LOVE!

A great idea for garden! I already have a nice tomato leaf, tho it's called basil from CS (but smells like tomato leaf). The first scent that came to mind when I started out doing candles was tomato leaf because it is one of the most heavenly smells in the veggie garden! I always thought that if a man wore tomato leaf cologne he would be irresistible!

There is a devoted following for dirt FO in the soaping communities for hunters/outdoorsmen. I had requests for it when I was making soap. What I never understood is if these men actually think a combination of chemicals (used to make the fragrance oil) will trick animals in the wild. I mean, why not just rub yourself down with real dirt? Any thoughts?

Oh, I had no idea that hunters use it! I'm interested because I like the scent of garden soil. I hate hunting (hope I don't offend anyone saying that), so I'll be sure to market in a different way. I appreciate the info! Thanks!

The only one I've tried (and I don't even know why I bought it) is Dirt from WSP. If anyone wants it, it's theirs! It smells just like dirt.  I don't know why anyone would want a dirt scented anything but it had good reviews LOL!

I'm interested if nobody else want's it. How much do you want for it?

Save On Scents and another supplier, I forget which one right now, will look into it, have a line a wacky scents.

Some of the ones I have tried are:

    Dirt/Potting Soil/Gaia - smells just like potting soil - Fragrance Buddy/WSP
Zucchini/Zucchini Flower - this one is from Brambleberry and it smells just like Zucchini, it's incredible.
Decayed Rainforest - smells like moldy plants. From SaveOnScents.
Rubber - Used to get this from Nature's Garden but they discontinued it. Save On Scents has one but it's not good.
Gasoline (low octave) - smells just like gas
Baby Diaper - don't even want to talk about this one. True to name. from SaveOnScents.
Tar - smells just like fresh tar. - SaveOnScents
Garlic - true to name - SaveOnScents
Permanent Marker - true to name- SaveOnScents
Seasoned Chicken - don't know how they did it but it smells like chicken - SaveOnScents
Exhaust - true to name again - SaveOnScents

Wow, I had no idea! I have to check out that zucchini and the decayed rainforest and moldy potting soil are right up my alley because I do love the scent of garden soil. I've got to get over to Save On Scents. I'm already making plans for gas & exhaust as I write this!  Thanks so much for the info & reviews! (I'll stay away from the diaper... yech!)

I have a decent area but not a dream area by any means - if I could I would build that barn we have been talking about for 10 years and it would have a staircase leading to the upstairs which would be my candle cave- heated of course with exhaust fans and Windows to watch over my horses and the entire area would be wrapped in stainless steel counters with cabinets above and drawers underneath for all my supplies

I would have 3 in my dreams only expensive wax melters for all my blends and I would have a corner gas fireplace with a cozy chair or couch to sit and take notes while I wait for my creations to cure

I want it out of my house, I have taken the entire storage room up which we did install an exhaust fan but I have no windows and the office down there is full of bins with my oils and tester candles plus my son has such bad allergies I do not make them when he is home - this way I could just wander down to my cave regardless anytime I wanted and it would be so clean- open and more efficient!

    Sounds dreamy! ?

  7. Trying to make do with limited space, I find myself dreaming of the perfect candle making work area, but unsure what that might really be like. Do any of you have that dream workspace? What's it like? Wire shelving on the walls, a work bench & storage bins? A shelf of Presto pots?  If you don't have your dream work space yet, how would you design it if money and lack of space were no object? :)

They don't need to be unlidded to cure. I lid my candles as soon as the wax becomes solid enough to move the candle around. Usually I try to lid, label, and pack my jars the same day if I have the time.

Wow, this is good to know! Working with limited room like I have, it's been getting cramped having them sit around to air. Well, life should be easier now! Thanks! :)

  9. Hi,

I'm unsure about when I should put the lids on my jelly jar soy wax candles. I'm working on getting my stock up before I start selling online and it would be convenient to be able to lid them to I can stack  or put them in storage bins but I know they need to cure. I presume this means uncovered and exposed to air. Am I right? Do they cure while lidded? I'd be grateful for any advice! Thanks :)

I'm not familiar with that fragrance. Honey Patchouli is a blended patch with the sweetness of honey to mellow it. The patch in it is strong thou and very earthy.

One of the best straight patchouli's is from Lebermuth. But it can be very pricey and they have a minimum order or you pay a fee. I think TallTayl was trying to organize a co-op a while back for it but at the time they were OOS. You could try to contact her and see if she is still interested.

Thanks for answering. If EBB patch is strong & earthy then I think it's worth a try. I'm afraid to try anything from Lebermuth because I know I wouldn't be able to afford to keep buying and I might get hooked!

  11. I have both the CS whisky & leather. Haven't tried the leather yet, but poured the whisky (C3, jelly jars). I know it was a bit early to light after 24 hours, but I'm impatient so I did. Gotta say, I don't like it. Slightly like tobacco, slightly like leather, but dull somehow. Maybe I want it to smell a little woody like a whisky barrel. I'm not a drinker, but I've made fruitcakes soaked in whisky and I remember it having a more appealing scent.  However my grown son likes it. I gave him the candles and I'm THINKING about using it. He said the scent wasn't very strong when lit, but there was little cure time. I'm thinking maybe it smells different to men (if that's possible).

Oh lawd I love Patchouli Honey from EBB. I have yet to meet one customer that doesn't like or love it. It always sells out no matter what I put it in... soap... candles... whatever.

It got me started on learning to like patch scents. Now I love them but PH is my fav patch scent.

    Hi Candybee,

Does EBB Patchouli smell like head shop patchouli circa 1960s/70s? I've been searching for a patchouli fo that smells authentic, but so far they have all been light and kind of floral. Not at all like that earthy, overwhelming scent I remember.

  13. WOW, I never expected so many great responses! Thanks everyone! It's a relief that uncolored is OK for most of you.  I'm thinking I'll offer all uncolored except maybe banana (since yellow seems a bit more forgiving) and see what happens. I love graphic design so I'll work on making the labels "the grab" rather than dye. I'm so glad I found this forum because all the info I've found has saved me weeks of experimentation ! ?

  14. Hi,

Do customers prefer colored candles enough that it increases sales significantly to go ahead and dye?  Dying would likely mean dealing with more visible frosting on my glass container soy candles (C3), but if dying is important to sales I can work on solving this. However, if uncolored is OK for sales, that would be terrific. I'd appreciate any advice!

                                                                                                                                                                                        Thanks :)

  15. Hi,

I'm looking for a good strong black walnut FO to use with soy wax candles (C3 wax). I want it to have that Shilling food flavoring nut meat sort of scent instead of a green hull smell. Has anyone here come across a good black walnut like this? I thought it would be easy to find, but it sure isn't. Thanks! :)

  16. I just switched to C3 after using 464 & 444. I loved 464, but had to change since it's not good to ship it in hot weather (CA desert).

So far I'm very happy with C3. Almost as easy to work with as 464.  What size container are you using the Premier 767s in? I've been considering making a wick change (I'm using the eco series now). Thanks for info sharing

  17. Hi,

I should have introduced myself when I signed up in December. My name is Dee and I'm in southern California. I've only been making soy candles (made & sold a few paraffin many years ago)  for a couple of months but I'm extremely motivated and have been absorbing all information and tips eagerly because we plan to start selling them online soon.  I enjoy every aspect of candle making, even designing the labels. This forum is fantastic the greatest thing I could have discovered!! ?

  18. Hi,

I've had a devil of a time trying to find patchouli fragrance oil (for use with soy wax) that smells like I remember from the 60s & 70s. All the ones I've tried lack that extremely earthy scent. They smell simply like nag champa with a floral scent added. So frustrating! Has anyone else found a patchouli that they like? Thank you so much for any info
