  1. I have been researching this as well...soy-based fragrances for 100% soy wax. I believe it's supposed to "mix better" with the wax. I've also read that it helps with intensifying both the cold and hot throws, and from others have said around the Internet, it has been very successful with the soy wax.
  2. How do you create the labels for the lip balm containers?
  3. Hehe, wasn't going to use the jars to try to take them out...just wanted to pour in a jar and leave it in there, hehe. Thanks for the link, that is a good kit! Yes, it is something in the burning process...I made sure to state that I get these issues when the paraffin candles are burning. Understood; just to clarify, I just wrote "dirty air" meaning whatever chemicals that are in the air after a regular candle is burnt. I understand soy candles may produce soot or other stuff, but with the soy candles, I have zero allergy symptoms. Awesome! Thanks for links, advice, and for replying!
  4. Thanks Tallbabydoll and Satin...two questions: 1) If I use votives, would that mean I would need to experiment with molds? Can I start with somthing "simpler" by using small jars so I can just pour the wax and go? I'm just trying to spend the least amount of money on my mistakes and experiments just to start off. After I get the hang of it, I'll get bolder 2) I am interested in making 100% soy wax candles. Do you know of any starter kits for this type of wax? Regular or commercial candles that I've bought in the past give me allergy symptoms including headaches - I'm assuming it's the paraffin or other chemicals in the candle when they burn. 3) Where could I begin in acquiring the tools needed for votives? I am just estatic about creating my own candles where I don't have to deal with the "dirty" air and I can enjoy having candles around me at last. Thank you very much for the help.
  5. I haven't experienced this yet, but I call them "tricky people" or "invisible leprechauns." These are the same little people who: -steal your pencil/pen when it falls on the floor. The pencil/pen mysteriously disappears! -steal ONE of your socks from the dryer when you KNOW you put two in there! -keep the thing you are looking for away from you until you are not looking for it, then place it in front of you! -stick their foot out in front of you where you trip over nothing and make you look dumb at the mall or in another public place! -etc., etc. I guess they are now in the candlemaking business too!
  6. Which is recommended for a newbie, votive or tealight? I am assuming tealights are the smallest ones...I want to make something small to try things out first. Are tealights the same as (or similar in size) the candles I've seen in the small little tin cans? Thanks Tallbabydoll for the tips thread and archive referral.
  7. Thanks all! I've spent the entire day reading about candlemaking. I am sure I will enjoy reading these boards. Thanks all for the welcome!
  8. Quick Questions: 1) I did a search and became confused after reading on one thread that essential oils were more expensive than fragrance oils, and on another thread read that the reverse is true. Which is the more expensive oil? 2) On another note, is fragrance oil the better oil to use with soy wax candles? 3) Also, anyone know of any suppliers that create fragrance oils made out of soy? Thanks
  9. Hello all: I am also new to the site. My name is Daira (pronounced DIE-ra). I used to design web sites for 9 years and provided web hosting and domain name services for 2 years (so if you have any computer or web related questions, I'd be happy to help out). I currently work in tech support and am almost finished with my Master's in Manangement Information Systems. Anyway, I have been reading about candlemaking recently. A coworker's office smelled great and discovered that she was using an Er'go soy candle called Papaya. I had bought candles in the past, but could not stand the smell or it would make me cough/sneeze/get headaches. But with this candle, it didn't! This led me to investigate and learn more about candles and candle making. I find this craft interesting and it looks like fun! I have never made a candle before, but I look forward to learning more about it. There is SO much information online, that it's tricky to start out. I even went to a book store and read about candle making there too. If anyone could point me in the right direction as to where to begin, and what "proper" and/or best tools that are needed, that would be great. Is candlemaking something I can do in my apartment or would I need a shed or warehouse to do? Just wondering, thanks! I would like to make candles for myself (and possibly for a small side income in the future) if I can do it right. I am interested in making 100% soy wax candles, if possible, because paraffin or regular candles give me allergy symptoms.
