  1. I'm taking this cheap imported POS back and going to get an old fashioned candy thermometer. I wanted something that was easier to read but it looks like the old tried n true candy thermometer's are gonna be the way to go...
  2. Bah! ya know, when you go to the store and buy an innocent looking digital thermometer that appears to fit your needs, then when you open it, you find out the battery is dead. So after trekking around to find the right sized battery, you get all excited to make your first batch of tarts! But alas, the imported product from a far away land, refuses to work. It shows 3 L's on the screen, even after several minutes in boiling water, it still will not register a temp. So I have a half melted batch of wax in my pour container and can't pour it CURSES YOU PESKY THERMOMETER!!
  3. I feel your pain! trust me. I have to deal with people who make 5-100times more money a year than I do, and they ALL have this same kind of attitude. I just fake my best smile and tell them to get bent, in my head of course.
  4. Hmmm, sounds like a plan! WALMART HERE I COME!
  5. hmmm will have to check those out. what is the suggested pour temp for those?
  6. I'm starting with tarts first. Thats all I ordered were clamshells, wax, FO, etc. Except like a fool, I got too excited and didnt order enough clamshells, so I am going to try half batches instead of a full pound, etc. So excited to get started!
  7. IT'S HERE!!!!!!!!!!! Now, my days off need to hurry up!! I will say some of the FO's smell divine out of the bottle!
  8. So how's this for a stroke of luck. Apparently UPS got the lead out and my supplies are here a day early!! Sadly I have to leave for work shortly so I won't be here when they get dropped off, but they are on the truck today!
  9. Warning? what warning? i have no idea what you're talking about! :tiptoe: Now, my next problem. WHERE IN THE WORLD AM I GOING TO PUT ALL OF THIS STUFF!?!?! Anyone have a house I can borrow? ha!
  10. If I were more advanced in my Candle making skills, I wouldn't have a problem with private labeling. As others said, it helps you reach out to others you normally wouldn't have access to. Just make sure that if you have a website, that it is updated to properly reflect your inventory levels, or willingness to create a large influx of candles, etc. Not saying everyone in the world will want to order, but you should be prepared for a rise in sales if this is successful. Good luck!
  11. I'm such a n00b.. In my excitement to make my first order, I failed to realize that I ordered 20lbs of wax to only 10 scents. Meaning, I have more wax then scent! As well as, I only got 50 clamshells which is not going to be enough for all of this. So i just ordered 10 more scents and 50 more clamshells. This hobby is going to cause me to go broke haha!
  12. To everyone for being so helpful here. I have spent the last few hours reading a few threads and all of the information, while overwhelming, has been helpful. Things I've learned so far and I haven't even poured my first tart: PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE Patience Experiment/Test Read more of these forums! Don't be shy about asking for help And use the search button (cant promise on that last one I'll always do that but i try to!) I looked for a little while before deciding to join this forum. Several other forums I came across only had a few hundred to low thousands users and some further had no posts since last year. I am glad to see this forum is active with a bunch of helpful people. So, thank you from this newb to all of the more experienced folks. I hope that this new hobby can give me the relaxation my doctor says I need. And maybe one day in the future, a new business venture!
  13. wow.. I read the first 3 pages of this thread before I had to stop. Working in Fire/EMS this entire thread made my blood pressure skyrocket to see all of the gross errors he is making. I am new to the hobby I assure you, but I am WAY too OCD about things, and I would loose my ever loving mind if I ever sold a product that wasn't 100% perfect. I'm starting out only making tarts (since it's pretty hard to screw up a wickless item! lol) and until I perfect that art, I won't be doing anything else. I have spent alot of time on here reading things, and still finding new stuff to read. It takes time, practice, reading, trial, error, and patience before you can make a product that can be sold. Thankfully I have some wonderful friends that are willing to be testers for my tarts. They can't wait until I have a batch ready and are willing to pay for the samples, which I thought was pretty nice of them! I had written the cost of this first batch off as a learning expense lol! I hope this guy still reads this forum if he does I have one thing for you: Do your research, homework, PROPER testing, and for the love of god man, don't sell products that are unsafe.
  14. i broke down and bought a taylor scale.. its the bamboo type, its all that meijer had :-/ cant wait to do my first tarts next sunday! thanks so much to everyone for the help! this has been an exciting adventure.
  15. I have not, am looking at it now thanks! We are blocked from ebay at work, so I will check when I get home tonight.
  16. OK so I hate going into stores. I always buy too much lol. I went in to get a cookie cutter scale and thermometer and I walked out with the thermometer, measuring cups, measuring spoons, and a pot to act as my double broiler. Didn't like any of the scales they had as they all took a bunch of batteries and only went up to five lbs. So now the hunt is on for a plug in type scale for less than 50$
  17. Peak had a digital one that you could set a temp alarm on. I thought that feature was really handy but I didn't order it as I thought it was a little bit on the expensive side, same with a scale.
  18. Thanks!! I've looked at some "closer" suppliers but by the time you figure in shipping, its just as expensive or more than others :-/ and the 25% off coupon helped. That's what made me take the bait and finally dive in. The forum wont let me look at the classifieds Apparently I'm on probation for 30 days, because I wanted to see if I could source a few items there, I.E. a good digital thermometer and a scale.
  19. Thanks! Im going to try just a few with the pillar blend by itself, then the mix with paraffin, paraffin by itself, then experiment from there. I have 20lbs of wax coming soooo ya I should have plenty lol! Items will be here mid week, and I have three days off coming at the end of next week, so excited to try my hand at this.
  20. Holy smokes Peak is fast. My order is already shipped!
  21. So here is what I ordered. Hope I got everything :-/ Ecosoya Pillar Blend Soy Wax 10 lbs. F1133 Fragrance Sampler Pack: Choice of 10 #1 Cedar #2 Cinnamon & Balsam #3 Frasier Fur #4 Purely Peppermint #5 Winter Wonderland #6 Lavender #7 Lilac #8 Midsummer Night #9 Storm Watch #10 Twilight Woods Seamless Aluminum Pouring Pitcher: 4 lb 6 Cavity Break-Away Tart Molds, pack of 50 Red/Pink Concentrated Liquid Dye 1 oz. Hunter Green Concentrated Liquid Dye 1 oz. Single Pour Container Wax-IGI 4630A-SLAB Vybar 103 8 oz. Unshipped $2.95 1 $2.95
  22. I thought about the kits as well but I don't really want to do containers yet. The kits are pretty awesome though, but they didnt have one for tarts Going to get the thermometer and scale locally.
  23. Ok so i found a thread where someone used Ecosoya PB with some 4630 and got excellent scent throw and it wasnt as brittle. So i guess thats what im going to do. 10lbs each of ecosoya pillar blend and 10lbs of 4630 with a scent sample pack from peak (10 different scents), my pouring pitcher, red and green liquid dyes, and 50 clam shells. hopefully this is enough to get me started except for the locally sourced items.
  24. I guess my only question is how well do these hold up as tarts? Is it too soft? I got most of my order ready for peak since I have that discount coupon for the shipping. It's going to be the cheapest place to get me started. The only thing Im not getting from them is the scale and themometer. Im going to try and get those here locally.
  25. So an Ecosoya Pillar Blend with Ecosoya Container blend? jeepers 20lbs of wax lol going to have lots of practice!
