Need advice from Country Comfort Jar users...double wicking with CD wicks?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I have searched and searched and cannot seem to find too many posts regarding the 8 oz Country Comfort Jar and wicking.

I use a blend of C3 and GB415 with 3% beeswax. I use 9% FO. I am currently testing the 8 oz Country Comfort Jar from Fillmore.

I have tried to single wick this jar and resulted with uneven burns, mushrooms, hangups, etc.

So I decided to double wick this jar. I'm a little concerned and think that maybe I may not be getting accurate results. Some people have recommended double wicking with 2 CD12s for this jar. What I have found is that 2 CD6s are working well but the jar gets HOT. So how can anyone use 2 CD12s? I know wax formulations are different etc but that has me wondering. With the two CD6s the sides are burning clean and the wicks have little to no mushrooming and are trimming down as they burn very well. But the glass is super hot. I tried 2 CD5s and found that many times I would be left with hangup of wax on one side.

I'm thinking about when I test the 16 oz comfort jar...it's going to be a hot nightmare!

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :(

Hi Msant!

Have you tried at all with using Eco series wicks? From my experience in testing over the years in using CD series, LX series and CSN series is that I never really got the desired results I was looking for like I get with the Eco series wicks. I have been making candles for 15 years now and tested everything known but have ALWAYS consistently received far better results using Eco wicks than any other.

CS sells inexpensive sample packs to try out the Eco series. Based on viewing the jar I would recommend trying either a Eco 8 or 10 for single wick or Eco 4 for double wick. When you double wick a jar you should be going down in wick size not up. The Eco wicks are self trimming and even after 5 hours in burning my candles there is little to no mushrooming at all. The key in preventing mushrooming is keeping the wick trimmed every 3-4 hours, however some wicks mushroom far worst than any no matter what.

I hope all of this helps you. :-)

Thanks Kandleindulgence, I'll have to dig up my old Eco wicks and try with those. Just for additional info I recently tried the CD22 wick alone to see if maybe that single wick is enough for this jar and first the wick was a torch! So big and did leave hangup even halfway down the jar and mushroomed like crazy. Keep coming back to the double wicks for some reason.

I wick a 4" apothecary jar (464 wax) with 2 CD-5s. Yes, the sides get hot but that is what stops the hang-up and give the better HT. My container pinches at the top so it is more of an issue than for a straight-sided container. Keep the wicks as close together as you can and, of course, centered. I was never able to single wick the container.

Thank goodness someone has the same experience! I'm not crazy. I'm still burning the CD22 in comparison to double wicked CD5s and CD6s and boy the flame is huge. Again melt pool is lacking! But the CD5s and CD6s are sweet and low and doing their little job! The scent throw is great too. Thanks for the feedback and advice Rjdaines.
