SouthernGal
I started thinking - 'instead of trying to rid soy of frosting in containers, I wish there was an additive that inhanced it and give it that mottling look you see in some paraffins'.I started googling it but the only thing I found was Mottling Max for paraffin candles. I thought about trying it but wanted to ask you guys first if y'all knew of such an additive for soy? While googling I did find a candle company that claims their mottled candles are a soy blend...TIA Edited January 5, 2011 by SouthernGal
Jokerjen
From the pictures that looks like palm wax to me.....
dnj
It does look a bit like palm. Maybe it's a palm/soy blend? I love the look of those candles
SouthernGal
I kind of thought it look like palm. But I really like the way paraffin mottling looks. I like the way these pillars mottle. I think I've seen it in paraffin container candles before. bart70
From the pictures that looks like palm wax to me.....This is a very popular line taken by a stockist of palm pillars in my local area - She tells everyone they are soy to take advantage of its popularity (Despite the company who makes them saying they are not).Have not been able to find a feathering soy wax anywhere.....:rolleyes2:rolleyes2Either way, the ones pictured do look good regardless of what they are made from.Rob
Stella1952
Mixing in different types of palm wax (feathering, starburst, Glass Glow, tortoiseshell, etc.) at different percentages can add a lot of character to the "flat" dimensionless look of soy wax, both in containers and pillars. Put on your lab coat and see what you can come up with!
Jokerjen
Well, Im gonna play today and see what I can come up with....I can't get the conatiner palm aroiund here so I am gonna mix fethering palm with container soy and see what happens.... SouthernGal
I can't wait to see your results. I've placed an order but I thought I would try using mottling paraffin with a mottling additive.
Jokerjen
Well, I already do the mottling paraffin and do not need a mottling additive with the wax I use, curious about the soy and palm though!lol...so I will do a little playing.... Jokerjen
This is a pic of the candles with the paraffinhttp://www.heavenlyscentsationscandles.com/catalog.php?item=11&catid=6&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D6
SouthernGal
I love those. That's the look I want. I've been using a 70/30 with 4630. But I want to see if I could get the look I want with blending mottling paraffin. Are those your candles Jokerjen?
SouthernGal
Are those your candles Jokerjen?Oops!!! Sorry for the stupid question. My internet is down and I'm reading from my phone, lol. I really like your candles!
Jokerjen
If that is the look you want then I suggest 1286 for containers and 1274 for pillars, that is what I use and you do not need an additive. And thank you :smiley2:
Jokerjen
Ok, so here are the visual results....I tried just pouring into jars and that didnt work out....so I preheated the oven to 170..warmed my jars..poured the wax and placed them in the oven and shut it off...the trick is to cool very slowly....Sorry for the poor quality of the pics but my camera is at home...The red is straight palm and the other 2 are a 50/50 mix of palm and soy.Now to test wicks..... SouthernGal
Those look great!!! I really like the 50/50. It could be just my eyes playing tricks on me but it looks like the 50/50 looks softer. I really like the softer wax look, jmho. What do you think? Can you tell any difference? Jokerjen
The 50/50 mix is definately more uniform in appearance, where the straight palm has more sporadic patterns...in person it looks alot like the picture that you posted.
SouthernGal
in person it looks alot like the picture that you posted. With the wax being 50/50, this would explain why they can market their candles as soy.Thank you for sharing your photos!!!
