Newbie with 444 and Eco Wicks

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I am brand new to this board and to candle making and want to thank everyone for all of the info you have shared. I read a lot of your suggestions as well as manufacturers info before I started. I never realized how much time and testing actually goes into candle making.:shocked2:

I decided to go with the GB 444 and the Eco 12 wicks for my Libbey 13.25 oz double old fashioned tumblers.

I was so excited to recieve my products that I began my first attempt after an 11 hour work day training a new client. I didn't have a digital scale and I didn't realize until the exact moment that I poured my FO into the melted wax that the math calculations I did in my head were wrong. So on with the improvisations.

9-29-2010 9pm Batch A:

1. Heated 5 1/4 cups of GB 444 to 175F and removed from heat.

2. Added 6 oz of Lonestar Pumpkin Pickin FO at 150F. OOPS:rolleyes2 but it sure smelled good!

3. Pondered what to do.

4. At 130F added more wax to total 8 3/4 cups and reheated to 168F.

5. Poured first candle into preheated (170F) tumbler at 110F. Stored on wire rack.

6. Poured remaining jars into heated tumblers at 104F. Stored in cooling 170F oven.

4. Next morning tops were a bit lumpy so I heated with a blow dryer. Big lesson learned! Do not get to close to your candles with a blow dryer or you and your cabinets will be wearing quite a bit of wax.:P

The tops were not perfect but they sure smelled good!

5. Excitement got the better of me so I decided to burn one at 9:30 pm after reading about people's wicking issues.

The candle burned beautifully but they need to cure longer. I made another batch of mandarin/lemon before burning so i am not sure if my smeller is thrown off or if the hot throw just wasn't that strong.

You are so right! I am obsessed. I have been reading this forum and searching different vendors websites all week.

I want to try so many different fragrances but I know I have to get my pour right first....baby steps.

My second batch I poured last night look amazing!! I will post another thread with the pictures. I messed up with the FO blend, though. I had a 4 oz bottle of Mandarin/Tangerine and a 1 oz bottle of lemon chiffon that I mixed. I had no idea the lemon was so overpowering. Again, baby steps.

I really love the scent of the Pumpkin Pickin from Lonestar for the Fall. It is not overpowered by some of the spices that have turned me off of other pumpkin pie scents. I can't wait until that batch finishes curing so I can test the HT.

P.S. The messy wax splash all over the candle is from getting too close with the blow dryer. I walked around all day with tiny bits of wax in my hair. I called my husband after that fiasco and asked if he had a heat gun and, yay, he does. No more messy splashes.
