anabanana's candles
I made OHM scented soap yesterday. It was 35% coconut oil 40% crisco, 15% grapeseed oil and 10% shea. I added ground oatmeal and honey at trace and the bar seems kinda flaky. Did I do something wrong? It looks beautiful and smells great. Should I just give it some time? Meridith
How much lye did you use? Oats and Honey? Did you check for zap? Can you post a picture? Is it flaky or crumbly? I'm trying to picture what you mean by flaky. Other than that, I'd give it some time and if it doesn't zap, I would not worry about it and use it for yourself. anabanana's candles
No zap. It was a 1 pd recipe and called for 2.3 lye and 4.66 water. It seems to be flakey and crumbly, but the acual bars don't crumble just the pieces that get cut off. It is also very smooth, almost like a creamy texture. I tried for a pic, but it doesn't show what I mean.
anabanana's candles
Oh yeah, the soap also has hairline cracks running through it if that helps.
LovelyLathers
It sounds like it overheated, that is why you have cracks and it can make it flake too. Honey will do that unless you put it in the refrig. Especially if you used any type of milk.

I came back to post and then read it cracked. Great minds DO think alike.
anabanana's candles
No milk and I didn't insulate, but what does that mean? Is this batch unuseable? Can I fix it?
LovelyLathers
Yes, you can use it as long as it doesn't have any zap. Honey makes the soap very hot and you will get cracks.. Any thing that makes a soap overheat, milks, honey, some FO's will do better if you put them in the refrig. Also you do not have a lot of soft oils in it which in my opinion will make it flake, also. I try to do 50% soft / 50% hard oils. Or atleast 40% soft to 60% hard. I also do not use more then 20% coconut oil either.
crazycacti
Dont people say not to use grapeseed oil also-since not much of a shelf life? Seems like i bought some when was going to make my first batches and then recommendations were not to use-so it still sits in cupboard!! LovelyLathers
I use grapeseed in some but only 10% or less. I have never had a batch with it go bad with that little amount in them. But yes it can go rancid in high amounts.
