Does anyone know of a list, website or can tell me what kinds of oils can be substituted for others in a recipe?

I keep hearing RICE BRAN OIL, PALM KERNEL OIL, AVACODO OIL.......AND OTHERS that are not usual for me in soapmaking.

I see alot of recipe's I'd like to make but don't know what I could subsitute an oil for..........

Is Rice Bran Oil something I can come by at a grocery store?

Is it considered an expensive oil?

Thanks.............!:D

that's the fun, figuring out what oils do what. It all depends on the fatty acid makeup of the oil, whether they are "hard" or "soft", hydrogenated....

"Standard" substitutions that don't change the feel too much:

palm/lard/tallow

And coconut/palm kernal oil.

Most soft oils can be sub'd for each other, but your soap will change characteristics. And you always have to run things through a calculator.

Bunny has a good thread in the FAQ about how to build a recipe

And here's a good site to understand what fatty acids do and how oils perform
