RobinInOR
that's the fun, figuring out what oils do what. It all depends on the fatty acid makeup of the oil, whether they are "hard" or "soft", hydrogenated.... "Standard" substitutions that don't change the feel too much: palm/lard/tallowAnd coconut/palm kernal oil. Most soft oils can be sub'd for each other, but your soap will change characteristics. And you always have to run things through a calculator.Bunny has a good thread in the FAQ about how to build a recipehttp://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3164And here's a good site to understand what fatty acids do and how oils perform http://www.naturesapprentice.com/oilchart.htm
siberia
Like Robin said, that is a big part of the fun of soapmaking! Here's a good read on the different oils, their properties and how they compare to one another. Soap Naturally - Description of fatty acids properties of some soapmaking oils.
