Katcameback
Hwat is the optimum time for a 3 inch pillar to reach the proper meltpool for pariffin? I'm wondering if I should be using a larger wick, but I don't want it to be melting over the sides either.
judyvega
The general rule of thumb is your melt pool should widen about one inch per hour of burn time - typically after test burning a three inch pillar for three hours, I know if I need to wick up or wick down. Sometimes, though, it will catch up during the second burn, even if you think your wick is too small, so you might want to wait it out a bit more. Katcameback
Ok thanks. You know...I thought of that after I posted this, lol "1 inch per width" DUH! But, I never realized about the secod burn, so thank you. I'm glad I asked.
judyvega
Oh, and the reverse of that is that sometimes I think I have too high a flame, so then I wick down and it ends up too low and I have to wick back up again - So now I just wait it out a couple of burns to avoid the hassle lol. Katcameback
Don't you trim the wick? I thought that was just a standard thing to do with Pillars.
judyvega
certainly I trim the wick (have always done that even before making my own) - but the flame can still seem too high until the candle burns down within the shell a bit, know what I mean? Katcameback
Oh! I thought maybe there was wick I was missing out on that we didn't have to trim!! lol.
