Scout
Hi. This is my first post. I am having a problem with my wick curling over and drowning itself out. I doesn't happen all the time and the most recent was in a candle with a double wick. One wick burned perfectly and the other curled over and drowned in the burn pool. I kept having to pour out wax and relight the wick although this did not solve the problem. Any suggestions??
Meridith
Are you keeping the wick trimmed? What kind of wick are you using? It sounds like you might be using self trimming wicks like the HTP or CD. These wicks will curl over as they burn and even though they are called self trimming, they still need to be trimmed. Scout
Thanks for the quick reply. I do not trim my wicks because I use HTP wicks. I used HTP105 in this particular candle. I tried using HTP83 but was not satisfied with the burn pool so I went with the bigger wick. Do you think I should use another wick other than HTP?? If so, what do you suggest?? Thanks for your help. logcabinmomma
I double wick with HTP 104's and had the same thing happen when I experimented with not trimming. Now I trim just the tips off every other burn or so. You don't have to trim much off, but if you don't it will curl over and drown eventually.-Kristi
funnygirl
Yep, you still gotta trim em. They just get so long that they curl right into the wax. The ECO series do it to. They are still good wicks, and are a must have for me in many scents. Just trim them and they will be fine.

Thanks for your help. There is nothing wrong with the HTP but if you don't like the self trimming aspect and the curl, you could change to RRDs, LXs, or cottons. However, all wicks do need to be trimmed so you will have to trim no matter what. And all wicks have some kind of issue. For example, the RRDs, LXs, or cottons are known to get mushrooms. So I guess what I am saying is you need to figure out what "evil" you can live with the most. BTW - What jars are you using and what is the diameter? Scout
The jar is a 26 oz. apothecary with a 4 in. diameter. I tried using one wick - didn't work so I tried two. The candle burned fine - clean sides - but I just had that one stubborn wick. I use Ecosoya CB wax and this candle had Maple Cream FO. (great scent throw) I come across this problem every once in awhile - with different size jars - which is why I am baffled.
Meridith
I don't think you could single wick that jar. 3" is about as big of a diameter on a jar that you can single wick. I would try 2 HTP 93s with that jar. With heavier FOs, you might have to wick up. I have a similar jar I am having trouble wicking a few new FOs that are heavy. The 2 93s don't even come close, and 104's are too large. So now I am trying a whole other brand wick. It can be so frustrating.
