  1. Thanks, from reading for hours last night, I see alot of people use Ky Para-Soy Tart & Votive Blend. If I were to use another one do I need to look for a pillar or votive wax right since container wax will be to soft right without anything mixed into it? I'm trying to stay away from have to mix two different wax myself to start with..

The closest supplier to me is two hours away.. wish there was one that I could go to..

when choosing between soy and Para or soy is there one that is better with tarts? I thought i read somewhere that that para holds scents better than soy or is that wrong?

  2. Ok, so even though I only started making candles a couple of weeks ago, I want to try some tarts. They are just so cute! So I am driving to Candlewic this afternoon to pick up a sample of Ecosoya PB (1lb) and Crystallizing Pillar Palm Wax (1lb).

I got a little heart candy mold from Michael's this morning, and yesterday picked up a plastic paint pallet from Walmart for under a dollar. I just couldn't contain myself and poured a small batch of tarts with my 464 just now! I know it is a container wax so it is soft and not meant for tarts, but I wanted to experiment and see what happens.

Here is a photo right after I poured.... I got a little too excited and overflowed the first mold but after that was smooth sailing!

Oh, and I used freshwater cucumber FO from candlewic... 3.75 oz wax, 0.25 oz FO

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm just going to get into making tarts. when you make them this size with candy molds, how many do you melt at one time? I'm used to using the bigger ones..

  3. So I've been planning on getting a kit for container candles.. but now after reading your part of the forum, I'm wondering if it would be easier to start with Tarts then work up to wicking... After doing too much reading without having anything to experiment with infront of me yet, i'm stressing the wicking part.. :laugh2: Do you guys know of any kits for tarts or ones that would work... Or a easy wax to start with? I'm thinking

of using the little portion cups (not sure of the real name) to pour them in and candy molds.. does it matter what portion cups i get?

    Sorry for all the questions..

  4. Mzphee, the melt pool is the part of the candle around the wick where the wax melts and becomes liquid. It's where the lion's share of the fragrance comes from. The width of the MP determines how much scent can be released from its surface. If the MP isn't large enough on successive burns, the candle is said to "tunnel" which means burns straight down. This isn't how we want a candle to burn. We want the MP to spread out to the entire diameter of the container and release lots of FO as the candle slowly burns down.

When testing you are looking for several things - how slowly the wax is melting (long burns are better), how well the candle throws scent, how well the wick consumes the wax without a large flame or one that sputters, flickers, etc., how cleanly the candle burns (no noticeable soot or smoke) and how safely the candle burns (doesn't heat up the container more than you can comfortably touch, no wick "torch", etc.).

To test your candle, burn for 1 hour per each inch if inside diameter, ie. a 3" candle should be burned for 3 hours. Between test sessions, let the candle cool COMPLETEY, trim the wick to 1/4" and you're ready to go again. Burn for the same amount of time each time until the candle self-extinguishes at the top of the wick tab or there's 1/2 inch of wax left, whichever comes first.

My best suggestion is for you to make best friends with the search too and read, read, read. There is a HUGE amount of information contained in the threads. If you have questions about veggie wax candles, post them in the vegetable wax forum; otherwise post paraffin related or general questions here. Have fun!

thanks I've been wondering the same thing!!!!

  5. I order a lot for Peak's as it is just one state away and that helps with shipping costs. The kit looks pretty good, lot's of stuff and a nice range of FO.

The wax 4630 is a container paraffin blend, so if you wanted soy wax, this is not it. That said, I use 4630 and find that it is a great container wax and throws well and looks great. This kit should provide a great opportunity to learn the process. I don't use zinc wicks but they should work great. If you have any questions about 4630, feel free to ask and I will share what I know.

Thanks, I will keep you in mind with any questions about it.

  6. Newbie here.. I really want to get into making candles but after reading through all of this forum and all around the internet, I'm now so overwhelmed. I'm thinking I want to get a kit to start out in parrifin, but as I keep looking around I don't know which to choose.. Also any suggestions one which suppliers online have the best shipping charges? I looking through the list by state and the closest to me is two hours away.. I'm thinking I want to start by making container candles and votives. I would love any kit suggestions!?!?

    Thanks in Advnace!!
