  1. Crazzie, there is nothing particularly "green" about soy wax. When you examine the entire process by which soy wax arrives at your home, it is no "greener" than is paraffin. Besides the growing and manufacturing processes, you are still making a carbon-producing product. I choose to make veggie wax candles because I like the properties of the waxes. I also find them challenging with which to work. I think it would be disingenuous for me to try to promote them for their "greenness" or "sustainability" or anything environmental. I don't attempt to call soy candles "all-natural," organic, sustainable, green, soot-free, smoke-free or "pure." I promote them as high-quality alternatives to paraffin candles.

Soy is a renewable resource, though, and for some people that's an important issue.

  2. Interesting thought on the flammable bowls. Thousands are sold everyday here in the islands. The tourists seem to love them. Of course, the flash point of wood is 572 degrees F. For a candle to get that hot it would have had to reach its flash point. Not sure a judge would deem a candle maker responsible for such a reckless candle burner since the flames shooting out the top of the candle likely lit the house on fire before the bowl actually began to burn. But I appreciate the thoughts as they had not occurred to me.

I googled them and found these, you could make a little tag like this: http://www.amazon.com/Hawaiian-Monkey-Pod-Coconut-Candle/dp/B0006OCC0G

  3. What kind of scents? Holiday or just everyday?

    Both. A few here...

    Aquiesse has 3 new ones:

Black Fig & Cypress: petitgrain, mission fig, mediterranean cypress

Embers: Indian saffron, cardamom, leather, tobacco, olibanum & musk

White Tea & Mint: white tea leaves, night blooming jasmine, spearmint

    Voluspa has 3 new ones:

    Citron Vert & Vanilla

    Coeur de Cassis

    Atelier Provence Lavande

Votivo also has a new Winter Cranberry for the holiday.

  4. I follow a few candle companies on facebook and the big trade show (gift show) in Atlanta is going on this weekend. Looks like a bunch of lovely new scents being introduced! Is anybody here attending or showing there, or has in the past? I've never been to one but I imagine they're quite amazing events!

  5. Don't know if it will help, but there is a sticky at the top of the veggie wax forum that has FO's that throw well in soy. Peak is in post #7

Thanks for pointing me there! Several of the ones I named were there, but that list is from 2008 - if anybody knows if any of the following (not on the list, maybe they're newer than 2008?) have good throw I'd really appreciate it.

    Spruce Christmas Tree

    Red Currant

    Winter Wonderland

    Purely Peppermint

    Hollyberry & Ivy

  6. Does anybody have a rundown as to which Peak Christmas FO's throw well in soy? I can't resist their sale, and in my cart are

    Spruce Christmas Tree

    French Vanilla

    Red Currant

    Home for the Holidays

    Winter Wonderland

    Purely Peppermint

    Creme Brulee

    Hollyberry & Ivy

I've been working with CB135 but am having an awful time with gloppy tops from the low pour temps so I'm going to order and play around with some GW464 as well...

    Thank you!

  7. BINGO!! Bert is great to respond to customer's questions & concerns.

I placed an order on Monday (the 4th) and my order was shipped yesterday; in the comments section I asked whether any of the FO's I ordered will be discontinued anytime soon but haven't yet received a reply. Maybe she sent a note in the package? I really hope she'll be restocking - was looking forward to trying more of her FO's, especially the Christmas Pear which I ordered but is now sold out! :(

  8. Question for those of you familiar with these soy waxes: I used the CS wicking guide to find a wick to use with my CB 135 but their chart doesn't include an option for GW 415, which I'm planning to experiment with next. Are these waxes similar enough that the same wicks will work for the same sizes of containers? I also blend in some beeswax. My first ones didn't have much of a hot throw so I'm thinking either I needed more FO or needed to wick up (after 5 hours it still hadn't burned out to the glass of the container, which is 3" diameter). Ah, experimenting :rolleyes2 Any other tips as to the comparisons of the 2 waxes? I've done a bit of searching but didn't find much. Thanks :)

  9. I've only tried CB135 so far (with 4% beeswax) and loved the look of it but was disappointed with the hot throw - I used 1 oz. Beach Linen (from CS), maybe it's just a lighter fragrance or maybe it was underwicked but it didn't seem to throw at all... I've ordered some GB415 and am looking forward to experimenting with that too. I don't think I'll try messing with C3 as we don't have any local suppliers (that I know of) for it. Sorry I don't have any answers or helpful advice, just chiming in... :)

  10. What type of application do you plan to use the scent in...pillars, containers, soaps, lotions, etc, etc, etc.?????

Sorry, I didn't think to specify - I plan to make soy container candles (starting with CB135 and planning on trying GW415 soon) and am looking in particular for FOs that throw well in those. The only candle I've made so far was with Beach Linen from Candle Science but didn't get much of a hot throw from it...

  11. I just got an email from Peak (REMOVED SALE SPECIFICS -- Scented) FO sample packs (EDITED AGAIN TO REMOVE SPECIFICS, A VIOLATION OF THIS SECTION) and would like to try a bunch of good ones. I searched the forum and came up with the following as must-tries, do you have any other recommendations?

    Mountain Lake

    Moonlight Path

    White tea & Ginger

    Lavender

    Lilac

    Ocean

    Blackberry Tea

    Blackberry Sage

    Coconut Milk

    Fireside

    Home for the Holidays

(I haven't checked Peak's website to see if any of those have been discontinued; some may have been because I couldn't pull up any posts more recent than '07 or so...)

Thanks!! Been hoping for a sale so I could try more lovely scents!

  12. Thanks everybody! I'm taking lots of notes :) The whole process of this is just fascinating to me, I never would have thought there was so much science and experimentation involved. I'm looking forward to when the search function here is fixed; the things I've tried researching so far only pull up fairly old posts, so it will be nice when searches pull up newer info. How long does it take to get full access to the board? I tried to respond to someone selling FO's in the classified section but after I logged in it wouldn't let me do anything :/

    Thanks again!

  13. Hello from a new member! After a bit of research here I just placed an order with Candle Science for Ecosoya CB 135, some beeswax to mix in, jars and wicks, and a small assortment of FOs. Looking forward to experimenting with them!

I was wondering if any of you would mind sharing 5 or so of your top helpful tips, little things you've discovered after trial-and-error and wished you knew when you started out. And I'd also appreciate any other helpful advice. Thanks! :cheesy2:
