  2. Gday I just purchased what is supposed to be a 2lb Wax Melting Pot, however it appears to be a mini melting pot. i.e. it is only holding 1 1/2 lb of unmelted wax. Is there anyone here that has a 2lb pot? I have a 4lb pot, which is great. So if anyone could give me the dimensions on the 2lb pot or alternatively the dimensions on a mini pot. Thanking you Susan
  3. I'm a nobody, nobody is perfect, therefore i'm perfect ~=} lol
  4. No it is not a cheap hobby, and I was mistaken in thinking that getting all of the equipment was the most expensive part, more fool me :embarasse . My problem is two fold, one I am on a Disability Pension, so I do not have a disposable income. Secondly I used to live in WA, where I could have gone and picked up my supplies, and gone to some classes, however I now live in Tasmania, no classes and no local suppliers, which means not only do I have to pay for the Wax but also get slugged for it to be shipped. I am not bleeting oh woe is me, far from it, I am determined to get the "PERFECT" candle. More power to you for being able to sell your candles , I am not looking to sell mine, I am a perfectionist which is another problem for me. Now if you were to say to me 'hey Susan my PC is broken', I could walk in and fix it no sweat. But candles aint PC's lolz
  5. Stella the reason I am picking peoples brains is because I am on a Disability Pension, and I do not have a huge disposable income, so any tips, brain picking, advice I can get from here costs me nothing, except for peoples patience and time :smiley2: I am sorry if I am driving you nuts
  6. Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi Richard may I ask what sort of wax you use? And where you get it from Tried the Parrafin, got the making of them down pat, although sooting was a problem. Moved onto Feathered Palm from AACM, which is tunneling really badly, that or having blowouts. So now I am looking at two things to try. 1. Buy a kilo of Ecosoya Pillar Blend from NCS (to see how I do with the Soy) 2. Buying everything from wax to wicks from ACS.
  7. wooo hooo 1 question down, pellets are useable, do you know what ratio is needed of beeswax to the soy? PB enough to lower the MP. huh huh and huh again? What is PB and MP? Yes agreed Parrafin is the easiest to work with, and the tunneling with Palm is driving me nutty, so that is why I thought I would give soy a go. Now going back to your time with Palm you added soy to make it softer, did the soy at least slow down the tunneling? I am in love with Palm over the Parrafin ( even though I had the Parrafin candles down pat). It is just the tunneling with Palm is driving me nuts. That's why I thought I would give Soy a shot. I am thinking of buying just a kilo to start with see how it goes. I am also changing my Palm supplier to ACS, however I still have 10 - 15kg's of Feathered Palm from the original supplier left. It is too expensive to just throw away. So this is what I am thinking at the moment buy 1kg of Soy PB, as is without beeswax. This will make 1 and a bit candles for my mould. Then heading off to ACS to buy Crystallizing Palm Wax, the wicks ACS have suggested for there wax, David at ACS suggested I get ACS wicks for the Feathered Palm Wax I have at the moment. Try out ACS wax and wick, to start, then slowly (and probably only if the tunneling continues, add gradual proportions of the Feathered Wax I have left over, just so I am not wasting the wax. Although Candybee you have me most intrigued with using the soy wax in your palm.
  8. I emailed the Ecosoya people about EcoSoya® PB .... first question :- Does this particular wax require anything extra to make pillar candles? such as Blending Palm Wax. Or can it be used to make pillars as is? There response :- If you wish to make the PB more pliable for larger candles it will be easiest to blend in something like beeswax at about 20%. If you are making something like a 3X3 pillar PB can be used straight. As my pillar is a 3 x 6, I wanted clarification so my second email to them :- My Pillar size is 3 x 6. I live in Australia and the only brand of Pillar Blend Soy wax that is available to me is your EcoSoya® PB, which sells for AU$10.45 per kg (2lb), the online supplier of your EcoSoya® PB wax says I need to add Blending Palm Wax as well which sells for AU$7.50 per kg, making it an expensive venture. So will your EcoSoya® PB hold up for a 3 x 6 mould? There response :- You do not need to add palm. Using PB at 100% will make a nice pillar in a 3x6 candle. The main issue will be wicking. The pillar will not “roll in” on itself like with paraffin. If you want it to do that then you will need to add beeswax. If you do what most people do then you will need to leave wall as the candle burns. This will take some figuring out on what wick works best for your candle. The goal in this case is to create a “Hurricane Candle” effect. Now unfortunately for me NCS, and please speak up you Aussies if you know of another online store that sells EcoSoya® PB, the only beeswax they sell is beeswax pellets and they have been discontinued. I have emailed EcoSoya again asking if they are talking pellets, slabs or either. But after seeing your post's I am back to square one to Palm or not to Palm
  9. What difference to Feathered Palm would an ACS over a CDN wick have? *ACS wicks are a pure textile grade cotton.* *CDN wicks are a pure cotton with a paper a braid.*
  10. Gday again I am thinking of trying out Soy Pillars and using Ecosoya Pillar Blend my mould is 76mm x 165mm - Concave. However NCS (Natural Candle Supply) said this and I quote "It is defiantly best to mix the Soy with the blending palm wax, as this will harden the soft soy and help keep it's form once set." I would have thought that being a Pillar Blend it would not need any extras

  12. I was buying them from Spotlight, also heading down to the Penguin Markets, and one I think I bought while I was back home in WA, cannot remember where. Although if one was bought in WA while on holidays, it would probably be like King Kong's a $2 shop" albeit that's not what I paid for the candle.
  13. Yer they burn really well, no tunneling no blowouts a nice even burn, the only the warning label says is basically it will burn for 72 hours. It doesn't list the manufacturer of it. *rethinks* about going Soy over Palm again :undecided

  15. Yes I love the feathering effect of the Palm, I gather you use Palm? Tammy. I am tempted to try out the Soy, to see if I can get a better burn from it, but my problem is I am a bit like a dog (loyal), if I find someone or someplace, that gives me (at the time) what I see a good service, I try my best to stick to them. Not always the cheapest way to go on the hip pocket, but that's just me *pant* *pant* *woof* *woof*
  16. Yes I have been in contact with David from ACS, at this stage I am going to stick with the Palm, see if a different supplier doesn't give me a better product. As I have all the equipment for Pillars. If that fails, then I will look at switching to Soy and going containers. Also at the time Tammy, I liked the look of the Palm as opposed to the Soy, and please keep in mind, this was my first purchase of Palm, I had purchased the Paraffin from this supplier, they were the only ones I could find at the time that sold Paraffin. It is a learning curve
  17. Pillar the whole candle, and it's plastic covered
  18. I currently have one store bought candle, I just undid the plastic wrapper, and it feels oily to the touch. Any ideas as to what kind of wax this is?
  19. Hiya Eric You stalking me :highfive: hehe just joking. Wick Stickums, well they do sell them here in Australia which is a real bonus! But switching waxes is a no go for me, I live in the ass end of Australia a little island called Tasmania. Which means not only do I have to purchase the wax, but get it shipped to me. (The shipping costs almost $10.00 cheaper) than the Palm Wax. The cost of a 25kg bag of Palm Wax costs AU$84.95, Soy Wax for Pillars a 22.6kg bag AU$222.7, Soy Wax for containers a 22.6kg bag AU$173.25, and this is from one of the cheapest online stores I can find, top that off with AU$70.00 freight and it is just too costly. So I have no choice but to stick at it with the Palm Wax. I am just exploring other options, seeing as how I am having trouble with the Pillars
  20. Gday Let me begin by saying I am a newbie when it comes to making a candles, but I do so enjoy it. I started off using Paraffin Wax, it was the cheapest for me to get shipped in, until my walls turned black from the soot. I then purchased a 25kg bag of Feathered Palm Wax. I love the scent throw from the Palm, so I have decided to stick with that wax. Up until I started making my own candles I had been buying 6" tall candles, that had a 65+ hour burn time. And were palm wac. So when I purchased my first mould, I bought a 76mm x 165mm - Concave Pillar mould. Did ok candles with Paraffin, nice even burn, cheap enough - DOWSIDE soot. Now with the Palm Wax, I am having so many issues, with tunneling (this is my biggest gripe) the tunneling. I have been told Palm behaves in this way. I have googled my ass off, rang my wax supplier, and have also made contact with professional chandlers. It was during one conversation with a professional chandler, she suggested rather than me doing pillar candles, I do container candles. To me it sounds like an option worth exploring. I contacted my wax supplier to see if the wax I had purchased from her would be okay to use in containers, she indicated it would shrink, other than that however it would be fine. Which leads me to a whole new set of problems and questions. I have several wicks here CDN 16, CDN 18, and 5m roll of 30ply cotton medium wick, and a couple of tabbed wicks size unknown. Now I am guessing here, but my Pillar mould is 3" in diameter, and rather than totally waste the wicks I have already, I was going to purchase some glass containers. So first question if I can find here at home to begin with a container that has a 3" diameter top, can I use the CDN 16 or CDN 18 wicks? They are a non tabbed wick. Which leads me to my next question, would it be worthwhile me buying a wick pin. The reading I have done, suggests a hot glue gun and tabbed wicks, I am wary of trying to use a hot glue gun, as I have a Parkinson's like illness, which means my hands shake a lot, and I can see glue going everywhere but where it is supposed too, that and I am scared of burning myself. Is any of the above possible, or am I just dreaming?
  21. Thank you Stella, PMS'ing here atm, so I am a little touchy:tiptoe:. Please don't get me wrong, I am extremely grateful for all help and advice, but in my defense I am a "Newb" to candles, so a lot of what you said "When I referred to a palm wax "blend," you have to understand that there are substances added and manufacturing differences in various palm wax formulas; otherwise we wouldn't have so many choices of pattern, texture and other key, repeatable properties. There ARE certain similarities, like the hardness of palm wax (needle penetration test). The polymorphic nature of palm wax allows it to make huge, showy crystals and patterns all the way to an almost clear, smooth, translucent state whose surface tends to fracture easily, simply by varying the pour temp of the same wax! It has an extremely narrow range of time and temperature between the solid and liquid states - it never really softens in the manner that paraffin and soy do. These are IMPORTANT PROPERTIES of palm wax that affect how it behaves when it is burned in a candle." When testing candles, you do not cut the side to relight it, I don't cut the side to relight I cut the entire unburnt rim off, when I go shopping later this week, I will be buying a BBQ lighter, the reason I have been cutting them back is because atm all I use is a cigarette lighter. "Keep burning your pillars all the way to the bitter end without messing with them and see what they do. You may be surprised..." The reading I have done says that Palm Wax has a memory, and the initial burn should equal the diameter of the candle per hour, as my Pillar is 3" in diameter, I thought I was doing the right thing with three 3 hour burns. The following pics are from a continual burn (Yes I know I am nawti, I went to bed and left it lit) However only one small blowout, no thick edges as per the previous burns, overall I would say I am happy :yay: with how this one ended up burning. It is the same candle as the first ones posted. A lot of it flew straight over this redhead's head. Given time ( I have been making my own candles now for 4 months, and only 1 month with the Palm Wax) I am hoping I will become as knowledgeable about Palm Wax as you are Stella , and I mean that sincerely. Susan
  22. Thanks Eric, the thing that gets me is I am doing as much as research as possible on my own google is my best friend, but there are just some things you cannot find, hence the reason I joined the forum. "And if none of that works, chase your cat around the room for a while. Its good for both of you." I don't have a cat I have a 12yo dog who is too fat and too old to chase anywhere *kicks* Pam in the shins, now I feel better:cheesy2:
  23. lolol second hand shops, well I have a choice of the Salvo's or St Vinnies, I live in Burnie on the NW Coast, the closest half decent shops are a 2 hour drive, and they still wouldn't have what I want, trust me I have tried everywhere here in Tas, as I said it bites the big one as far as shopping goes ....... and for that matter so does the weather, I miss the warmth of WA, but unfortunately this is where my man lives, so I am stuck here.
  24. I see that your candle on the left had a "blowout." ....... That wasn't a "blowout" it's where I cut the candle so I could relight it. The burn on the right is more typical of a 1st test burn of 3 hours ........ It was three 3 hour burns so a total of 9 hours burn time. STOP PICKING ON ME I come here for help, not to be made a fool of https://www.candlemaking.com.au/epages/candlemaking.sf/sec7975a3db51/?ObjectPath=/Shops/candlemaking/Products/wpalmf/SubProducts/wpalmf-1 is where I purchased my wax from, as far as I can tell it is not a blended wax https://www.candlemaking.com.au/epages/candlemaking.sf/sec7975a3db51/?ObjectPath=/Shops/candlemaking/Categories/statements/Palm_Wax_and_RSPO.
  25. lolz Tammy I would if Tassie even had a Good Guy's, my shopping choices (unless I get it freighted in) are Hardley Normals Hardley Normals or Hardley Normals. I so miss living on the mainland of Australia. I am originally from WA, while the east coast thinks it is remote, at least WA had SHOPS!!
