  1. Glad your supplies finally arrived. The weather is out of anyone's control.. I know Lonestar and other suppliers affected by the weather DID post some sort of banner on their sites informing their customers of the delays, it happened to me with CandleWic, but I received my colors and all is well ;)

  2. I use both methods - temperature manipulation and seeding. :)

For new folks, here's a link to an old thread from 2006 - back when CT members were testing 464. It has a good post by Jason (of Golden Brands) regarding tempering. It's post #174 on the link below (the entire thread is a wonderful read about people who test...). Jason is the rep for Golden Brands, BTW...

I read that thread a few weeks ago after your recommendation, Stella.

It definitely makes sense, and I temper my wax without even thinking about it too much, it's just the way I do things, and one of the steps I take to produce a candle. It's natural.

I guarantee you the anti tempering folks on this board probably also do it without realizing it :P

  3. Would everyone agree that first burn creates a memory pattern for subsequent burns? Partial meltpools from short term burns are difficult to overcome and often times results in tunnelling and the subsequent failure of the candle. I just have to go with the remark that it makes more sense to use a wax that does not require steps to make it work. If a person is just dead determined to make a wax behave; then tempering is a possible solution if it provides results. Anything is bs if it doesn't provide you with results but it may be anything but bs for the person who gains from the effort. Kudos to anyone who comes on the board in search of answers or positive feedback. That's what a good forum provides. Please leave all cash contributions at the door.

    Steve

I disagree, too. I've burned too many candles for the love of natural light, before I started making my own. I could assure you that short term burns do not have any impact on the quality and/or burn.. and I've never experienced tunneling when doing so.

  4. I've been reading up on how to temper wax (and chocolate) and it seems most people do it one of two ways. For those of you who temper your wax which has worked best for you?

    1) Heating the entire amount of wax to a predetermined temperature, adding FO and or dye, removing the mixture from heat and letting it cool and then reheating and pouring

    or

    2) Seeding - heating a partial amount of wax to a predetermined temperature, removing it from heat and adding in the remainder of the wax to help cool it down then reheating the entire mixture and pouring.

I know the steps are a little more involved than that but I just wanted to see which method most of you use and why? I know it's supposed to help with frosting but do you also find it helps create smoother tops and/or glass adhesion? Are there other benefits as well?

    Thank you!

I've noted smoother tops on my paraffin votives using the method I mentioned.

  5. I didn't know I could melt it back down...I thought that would make the scent go away or something.

Something else I noticed is that my repour (although it is not enough wax) looks like a pool of wax on top of the actual candle. Is this just because I didn't have enough and that's why it is so noticeable??? I hope you understand what I am talking about...lol.

Also, I was noticing some of the pics on here and how beveled the edges are on a lot of the candles. How is this done? Because mine probably wouldn't have looked bad at all if my edges were beveled.

This happens when you don't pour enough :) Happened to me a couple times when I've run low on repours lol

  6. hahaha wow...that statement was made after over a couple weeks of observing and reading the boards! Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone here but they really are not active boards..lol chillax!! candle making is supposed to be therapeudic :P I guess you haven't had your dose today, have you ladies!

  7. Good Luck.. From what I've seen these boards aren't very active :) Being new myself I can't help you here, I just researched and read read read....if you read enough you will know what's out there, and of course we need to test them all ! Everyone's house conditions (climate) are different and from what I've gathered that affects the results. So what's good for some, may not be good for others. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. lol
