  1. I'm thinking about putting together a case of scent samples and I need some input on containers. I was pondering whether or not I could use the little 5 gram mineral make-up jars (polystyrene) like this:

or the hinged polycon (LDPE) 'sample' containers like this:

I've also seen these listed as Polypropylene at some places.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not either of these can withstand hot wax. I think I like the little make-up jars better...but not if they're going to melt!

  2. Yep, I ran into this last week, too. It seemed pretty legitimate to me at the time, but in hindsite, I probably should have been a little more suspicious. Shortly thereafter, I got an e-mail from my credit union confirming the activation and explaining it a little more.

  3. I've used both a Sizzix and the larger die cutter, The Big Shot, with pretty good luck. I've also used scrapbooking punches with some degree of success. That's probably the best way to get smaller shapes and they come in circles, squares, etc. That material is really thick and your hand can get kinda sore from either method. An Xacto knife is helpful to get it thru it all the way.

I've been wanting to experiment with the whole iron-on thing but have never gotten around to it. Any other tips or pointers on that would be great!!

  4. I hate to ask such a "newbie" question, but my attempts at searching have not led me to the answer. This is my virgin run at CP and I'm sooo not feeling very confident!

I made it on Sunday but haven't been able to get back to it until 2-nite. It's a little soft and a tad bit oily but I think it's a go. So I took it out of the mold, sliced it up and set it in a cardboard flat on some paper towel. Now what?

  5. Yea, sometimes I just can't resist ole LTD. I get really irritated at their shipping policies tho. You order ten things and they'll ship one item per box and you pay shipping on every single item. :angry2:

In that regard, there is another catalog, The Lakeside Collection (http://www.lakeside.com/home.asp) that I *think* is run by the same outfit. They only charge you shipping once and usually ship everything together. They didn't have this item, in particular, but they have about 95% of the same stuff that LTD has at exactly the same prices.

  6. I placed an order with them in March. I got an order confirmation that the order was being processed and should be shipped in 7-10 days. I've heard NOTHING since then. l've sent several e-mails that have not been responded to. I had called them once to find out about mold release and I was very rudely told that they didn't have any. Based on that, I didn't even try to call them about this order. They never charged my cc so I've just written it off. Very disappointing cuz they have some nice molds!

  7. Thanx SD - you answered more than one question in there - even the ones I couldn't really express!!!

And the picture - worth a thousand words!

I'm still not sure about that heat gun, but I definitely DO respect it!!

I took a few pix that I wanted to post in the Gallery - that's how I discovered just how unfriendly Vista can really be. I've been fighting with getting my "device" recognized for a solid week now! UGH!!!

So I'm going to spend the weekend trying new things with wax and maybe even my "friend" the heat gun!!

Thanx again - you're the best!

  8. Since I zap them anyway to get the opening shaped the size and look I want, I just zap the inside too. It also helps me make the flat wax base inside for the tealites to sit on. So it all works out good. Besides I just love playing with my heat gun , so it gives me another excuse to play.

I made my very 1st orb with a metal Saturn last weekend, and it was quite obvious that the heat gun was going to be needed. But unlike you and Donita, I'm a little scared of it. :embarasse Does the melted wax just drip down to the bottom and cool? I made a few forever candles and ended up with wax "drips" on the outer edges - not the look I was going for!!

  9. Just had to chime in from another flatlander! I'm way up north on Lake Michigan close to the WI border. I've used all of these suppliers at one time or another. I've recently had some minor "issues" with NuScents but I'd still buy from them. I've been very pleased with DPS, especially with their sales. Kitty & Kerry at KB are fabulous! Kitty is organizing the ISOCAN thing. Still undecided if I can attend, but I'd sure like to.

Every now & then I ponder the idea of opening a candle supply store since there isn't much around here. A girl can dream...

BTW, I've given up trying to use soy and I've got some EcoSoya 135 and a smaller amt. (maybe 5 lbs.) of CB Adv. to get rid of CHEAP. PM me if interested :smiley2:

  10. I've been reading up on hurricanes and "forever" pillars and noticed some people have had aggravation with palm (the feathering variety, specifically) not releasing very well from their molds. Since I've been a container-candle kinda gal and have absolutely NO pillar making experience, I decided to go ahead and order some of this - it's not terribly expensive. I'll try to keep you posted as to how it works. Keep in mind, however, that when it comes to pillars, I haven't got a clue what I'm doing (yet!).............

  11. Mine came in clear bags but needed to be removed anyway since it's a 2 part mix and I didn't want to keep measuring twice.

That's another question I had...I was afraid to just mix both parts together in one container and *hope* I get even amts. of each when I use them. Is that generally what people do with the 2-part variety? I've only had the "1-part" variety in the past, so (obviously) this is new to me.

  12. I just received some UV absorber and it came in a white paper-like bag. I usually store my powder "stuff" in rubbermaid or dollar-store plastic containers for easier use. Does anyone know if UV absorber needs to be stored in something "opaque" (like the white bag it arrived in)? I got thinking that maybe it would "absorb" the UV rays if it was just sitting around in a more clear jar...and maybe not be as effective later on when I dumped it into some wax (?) :undecided

If I'm being blonde, just let me know! :smiley2:

  13. Just before Xmas I was playing around with this trying to make a lip treatment that works in the squeezable lip gloss tubes from Lotioncrafter. I used the castorlatum at about 3.5% and liked it pretty well. I was shooting for something more Blistex like but it turned out more Vaseline-like, if you know what I mean. It's still very soothing and it comes out of those tubes perfectly.
