1. Thank you so much, everyone, for all your help!!!! Will keep you posted on what turns out...:smiley2:
2. I'm using a CD 14 in a 3 inch diameter container. I think the wick maybe okay, because in my last test with a different fragrance, all the wax caught up and all the hang up melted by the end. This tester is starting to follow that same routine. I tryed wicking up and it burned too hot. Wicking down may be a possibility. Of course, unfortunately, maybe this FO just may not work for this wax.....boo.
3. Thank you for pointing that out!!! I have read that page a few times trying to decide which wax to try next, and for some reason it has never clicked that it is 2 waxes and I don't know why I just assumed it was USA added to it. That makes me a liitle better in my frustration with this situation. I don't know why. I may be starting to lose it a little.
4. I've heard great things about CO...I've tried it with the 444 with no success....anywhere from 1 teaspoon- 1 tablespoon. It didn't seem to make a difference in the appearance or scent throw in my experience, but I will definitley keep it around for when I start testing 415.:smiley2: Did it make your candles burn a little differently? Mine seemed to burn a little warmer when I have tried it, and the wicks seemed to mushroom a little more? Maybe it is just how it interacts with 444?
5. Ya, I've read that thread a few times...I don't know what compelled me to still try it...I think now, though I may be reconsidering trying the 415. I think the reason I tried the 444 was because you were supposed to be able to pour it warmer, but after trying to pour at 150, 140, 130, 120, 110, finally got smooth tops at 100. So, I guess it kind of defeated the purpose of buying a wax that was supposed to be poured a little warmer.:rolleyes2 I think I will be ordering 415 very soon. I know I shouldn't let a couple little scents scare me away so easily, but luckly I haven't found "my wax" yet and am still in the test-all stage.
6. If an FO works well in 415, shouldn't it work well in 444, since it is 415 with a little bit of USA? I am genuinely puzzled. For everyone that uses 415, which wicks are you using? I know it it really too early to tell for sure because I have only completed 3 test burns with Sultry Angel, but I haven't reached a FMP yet, and no mushrooming yet. I still have at least 1/8- 1/4 hang up on one side, and thin hang up the rest of the way around. I have completed 9 burn tests with the strawberry rhubarb and got a FMP at the 8th test. After the 9th, got thin hang up all around. These results are following my previous test with a different scent, only difference is that that had HT, and all caught up and melted down fine by the end. I was really hoping I could get these scents to work. Maybe I will only heat the next testers to 175. The confusing part is that they have VERY strong cold throw....like I said, I was scared to light it...then...nothing.
7. The 444 is the 415 with 2% Universal Soy Additive added to it.
8. Thanks! I will try 1 oz and see if it's any better...and only heat to 170-175. Thanks for the help...I will report back!
9. Sorry, we must have been typing at the same time! Now I read the rest of your reply. I wish it was my nose...but no else that has visited has been able to smell it either...
10. Thanks...I'll try both! Would that affect the throw?
11. Hello! I got some oils from Candle Coccoon that are super strong (only supposed to use .5-.6 oz per pound). I did the normal routine, heat the 444 to 185, add FO (a tiny bit more than the recommended amount), stirred for 2 minutes, let cool to 100 (the only way I can get smooth tops with this wax), stirred again and poured. The cold throw was awesome! I poured a tiny bit of the wax (only about 1/8 inch) in a Dixie cup so that I could test the throw in a warmer later. I let the candle cure for 6 days before I lit it and the hot throw was nonexistant! The strange thing is that I burned the Dixie cup wax in the warmer, not even 24 hours later and it filled the entire house with fragrance...so much so that I was kind of scared to light the candle six days later! Since I got insane hot throw from the warmer and not anything from the actual candle, would it mean that the problem is in the wicking? I am using the 8 oz Madison with a 3 in diameter, CD 14, which may end up being too big (1st burn, already 1/4 deep and almost FMP after 3 hours). I also have ECOs and cotton wicks in the drawer. I'm thinking about trying the ECOs...does anyone think the wick change would make a difference in the throw, or see anything else I may be doing that would affect it? Oh ya...This is the second awesome oil I have tried from this company that has had the same results. First one was strawberry rhubarb and this one is Sultry Angel. Thanks so much for any ideas!
12. Thanks so much!! I will stick with the CD 14. You're right...the hang up is gone! Everyone's feedback was extremely helpful and is MUCH appreciated!!! (I'm sorry...I'm very excited...)
13. Thanks! I think I agree. I think the 16 is burning a little too hot. I'll test them both to the end. I'm curious how much the 16 will change as it burns down... I wonder how some can get a full melt pool by the 2nd or 3rd burn and still not be too hot by the end of the candle? Hmmm...thoughts to ponder...
14. Opps! I meant in my previous post that I was using 1.5 oz CS oil, but wanted to try a new Candle Coccoon scent and use .5-.6 oz oil per pound, (amound recommended by them..) if that would change my wick size considerably. Well, I tried the CD 16 in my 3 inch Madison. Here is a picture of the 16 about 1 hour 15 minutes into the 3rd 3 hour burn test. At the end of the 3 hours, I has a FMP that was about 1/2 in deep. Still had that gunk on the sides. Here is also a picture of the CD14 after the 11th burn test. Still have about 1/3 of the candle to burn, but the hang up is melted, but the gunk is still there...although while it is burning, it is clear. The melt pool at 3 hours is right around 1/4 inch. I think the 16 is too hot...or will be once it burns down more, and I think the 14 is okay now, but should a candle really take 10 test burns to get a FMP?
15. Thanks Dana! I'm getting anxious for the 16s to get here....hopefully today! I got them from Candle Coccoon...along with a few samples. If I am using 1.5oz FO now from CS and am wicking with a 14 or 16, and then I use .5 oz or .6 oz FO per pound (recommended by them), would that change my size of wick considerably?
16. Thanks for your response. They haven't made it to the end yet, but they are on the way. I have them burning right now for the 7th test. I agree, I think the 16 may be too hot, but I may try anyway, just to see what happens. That little bit of hang up is starting to melt off now. Thanks again for responding so quickly...I want to continue testing...it's reassuring to know I am on the right track.
17. I hope this photo worked...thanks for the help!!!
18. Hello! I have recently changed wax from 464 to 444 because I just couldn't get the scent throw from the 464 I was looking for. So far I am getting much better throw from the 444,but was wondering if I could get some opinions on my wicking. I am wicking an 8 oz. Madison jar with a 3 inch diameter, and am using 1.5 oz FO. I have tried several sizes of CD wicks, and I have attached a picture of 2 candles wicked with CD 14. I have done 6 3hour burn tests, and there is still a slight hang up on them. On the sixth test, I have finally achieved a full melt pool. It has also began to mushroom a little, and the jar is about as warm as I would like it to get. On one hand I would like to wick up to see if the sides would get a little cleaner, but on the other hand the candle is already starting to mushroom and I don't really want the jar to get much warmer. The melt pool has not been deeper than 1/4 inch, which I like. Oh ya, in the picture, the candle on the left was an experiment with coconut oil, which seems to burn much hotter than the candle on the right without. I prefer without. Well, I guess my question is by looking at the pictures, am I on the right track, or shoud I wick up to a 16? Thanks so much in advance for all responses...everyone here is always so helpful! Opps..I'm having trouble attaching my photo.
19. Do you mind me asking which companies you would recommend for fragrance oil? I have used Candle Science and Peak. I really like both, but an always looking to try something new. I like that Candle Science rates their soy fragrances...It's really helpful..
20. I just saw on Just By Natures website that the 444 wax has an additive added to it which gives it a better scent throw than 464. I thought that the 464 already had a soy additive in it... I'm need to buy more wax and I was wondering if something threw better than the 464. I like how the wax appears, but what I'm really looking for is the best scent throw.:smiley2:
21. Well, I mostly wanted to improve the hot throw. The fragrances I am using are from Candle Science, and most of them have the 3 leaf rating (super strong). I've gotten one to throw pretty well to where it can fill 2 rooms (suprisingly it's one that only has a 2 leaves). So I figure the other ones should be stronger. Like I said before I am using the 464, add 8% FO at 185, let it cool to 130 or so and pour. I've let them cure for about 5 days, then try them out. I'm still trying the ECO wicks, doing most of the testing with ECO 8 and ECO 10. And, this may not really work, but that's kind of another reason I wanted to try the CO...because I read that it makes the wax harder and burn longer. A lot of the time it seems I may need a "half step" between wicks. Some of them are getting melt pools of 3/8 inch deep when I want 1/4. (That's my ECO 10) and my ECO 8s have lots of hang up...which I guess is mostly gone by the time the candle is burned down, so hmmm.... I hope this kind of explains what I am doing..
22. Hi Brenda! Thanks for the help... Is there something I should do to the CO before adding it? Is it supposed to be added as a liquid, or "as is"? When you said I may not get the results I am looking for, did you mean it may not affect the hot throw? I have read that for some people, that it hasn't. My curiosity is just getting the best of me...:rolleyes2
23. I found it! Thanks!! I think I'm going to try it. I bought some last night. At what point do you add it to your wax? I've never used additives before. I'm using 464..I heat it to 185, add fragrance, stir, cool to about 130 and pour. Thanks for the help!
24. I just saw on a website that %3 coconut oil can be added to 464 for better fragrance throw. Is that true? I had never heard that before...
25. Hi Caramel! Thanks... I feel a little better..:smiley2: I agree with you on not knowing what exactly is acceptable...although from what I've been reading...it sounds like your ECO 10 is good to go, no? Your result has been my goal...getting FMP around 3rd test, never burning deeper than 1/4" deep... Most of mine are about 3/8" deep at the end of 3 hours...so close...Are you getting a waxy film in your containers? Even in mine that are burning really hot are leaving a film on the sides all the way down. Seems like it should melt off. Maybe it's a soy-thing? :rolleyes2
