  1. Let me know how it works for ya, Candy. I'll prolly order from Peaks first and then try out WSP's bases after that.
  2. Glad to hear it worked out! I noticed on the site it did say it might be a little difficult to unmold, that's why I had some reservations about it.
  3. Looks like SFIC rules the roost That's what I was leaning towards, but I always like to hear what you all think. Thanks for your input!!
  4. Ok, add BCN to that list I had a brainfart and forgot about them. Do they have their own bases, or carry a particular brand?
  5. Hey all, I've been doing some research on bases, and I've narrowed it down to three suppliers to purchase from for my first batch. I'm wanting to start off with some Goats Milk. I've narrowed it down to WSP (which carries Crafter's Choice), Peaks (carries SFIC) and Nature's Garden (has their own bases I believe) I've heard great things about SFIC, and I know some of you have used Crafter's Choice bases but have any of you tried the bases from Natures Garden? Do you recommend them? I tried doing a search and couldn't really find any reviews on them. Thanks all!
  6. Hey, that sounds about right, thanks! Gotta love those "duh" moments
  7. Hey all, I'm getting some supplies in anticipation of my first batch. I'm going to do 1lb batches at a time. I found this mold at Peaks and was wondering if anyone has used it before: http://peakcandle.com/products/Round-Loaf-Soap-Mold__SM1048.aspx I thought it would be perfect since it holds 16oz. But it has two cavities...does that mean it's divided into two 8oz parts? I've never used a soap mold before so I was kind of confused when I saw it had 2 cavities. Call it a brain fart. I'm assuming if each half is 8oz then I can cut the 8oz parts in half to get 4oz bars. Does that make sense? :embarasse Thanks!
  8. Thats crazy! Looks like I'm gonna need to get some UV inhibitor. Thanks for your help!
  9. Well, it's been mostly cloudy all day today and it was never in direct sunlight. It was on a covered porch. As for the dye chips, I got them from Candle Science and they are Reddig Glo. The FO is suspect because I got it from my local candle lady and she had a large bottle of it. She measured out an ounce for me and put it in an empty cleaned out pill bottle So I'm not sure where the FO came from. I may have to send her an email and find out. I didn't know you could put UV inhibitor into the 4630 container wax. I kinda thought it may have had it in there already.
  10. So the strangest thing happened to one of my candles today... I made a batch of three candles (black cherry FO, 1oz pp used with the 4630) Each had a diff wick in them since I'm still testing wicks. I put a wick I hadn't tried before in one. 51-32-18P. I lit it for 30 mins yesterday morning but it smoked something fierce and had a tall flame (wick was trimmed to 1/4") so I snuffed it after 30 mins. I decided to try it again today and the same thing happened after a few mins so I blew it out (brainfart) and took it outside onto the porch table for the smoke to billow for a few mins. I forgot about it being out there and it was out there maybe 20mins or so. When I went outside to get it, it was discolored! I'm not sure how to describe it so I've attached a few pics showing what happened. The other two candles have been fine and there's no discoloration on them at all. Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong?
  11. Thanks! I'll definately take a look
  12. I might try to preheat my jars on my next batch. I've noticed that one out of my 3 had separated from the side of the jar after it had been lit for a while. We'll see what happens!
  13. Definately doing that! You should see all my word documents and spreadsheets
  14. Thank you Camay!! That's just what I needed!:whoohoo:
  15. Hey all, I did a search to see if I could find an answer to my question, and couldn't find anything, so I apologize if there's a thread out there that answers this already... I'm currently using Reddig Glo dye chips, and I was wondering if you could mix two colors of dye chips to get a certain color. Can you do that with the dye chips or can this be done with liquid dye only? Anyone have any advice or suggestions on this? Thanks!!
  16. Yeah, I know the 104 is definately too hot. I had a full MP in an hour, but I couldn't pick up the jar because it was too hot. So I think 104 is probably too big. Even the 73 and 83 are a little hot to the touch, at least I can't hold onto the jar for very long. I'm definately going to give the 52 and 62 another try and see how those feel.
  17. I'm so glad I found this forum! Everyone has been super nice and helpful (including you!). I've definately been bitten by the candle bug. I can't wait to make more. Practice makes perfect
  18. Thanks Leah! I've noticed with the 73 and 83, the top sides of the jar are a little hot to the touch, but as I go lower, the jar isn't as warm. Is it normal for the sides of the jar where the flame is parallel with to be hot like that? Or do I have too big of a wick? I'm definately going to try the 52 and 62 again. I don't think the jar was as hot with those...
  19. Thanks again Stella! My wicks seem to perform the same. I had to pull a wick out and put another in and when I used my "heatgun" to seal the wax around the wick, a bit of the priming melted off but it didnt seem to make a difference. Once the first burn was done, I dipped the wick and reprimed it, and it did just fine when it was relit
  20. Now there's an idea! How tight should I twist it?
  21. Thanks for the advice! This first batch was merely me playing around getting a feel for everything and to see if I'd even like it. I've never poured candles before, and I didn't want to buy expensive jars if I wasn't going to like it. I decided to use the partial vial of FO I had for this first batch since I was mainly playing around. I'm going to take my next batch a little more seriously since I really enjoyed myself. Thanks for all your input!
  22. Thanks Coconut I may try the 52 and 62 again with a different batch. The problem with them on this one was I never got a full MP. This might be because the wick wasn't exactly straight (I got it as close as I could. Still feeling out the wick bar), but even after 2 1/2 hours, it never got a full MP. The 62 was a little better, not as crooked but I never got a full MP with it either after 2 1/2 hrs. Should these wicks get a full MP on a first burn? Or did I give up on them too quickly? I only did one burn on the 52 and 62 then switched the wicks.
  23. Haha ain't that the truth! I'd love to be able to sell some day. I'm just starting so that's a ways down the road for me. Right now I'm just seeing what works for some and what works for others then figure out my way from there Thanks for the input!
  24. The 52 and 62 were going to tunnel so I'm not going to burn them completely. I pulled the wick out of 52 and replaced it with the 83. I'm going to burn the 73 and 83 all the way to the bottom. Those results were just after the first test burn. Thanks for the input
