  1. Ok so I just took my first soy making class yesterday so I am totally green to making candles but I want to get this hobby started. I just burned one of the candles I made in class yesterday. The smell was great but after I blew out the candle it smelled like my house was on fire!!! What causes the "smoky" smell?? The wick I assume??? If that is the case, what is a good wick to use to avoid that??? The teacher didn't tell us what kind of wick she gave us, just told us to put it in the candle. I can tell you it looked like it had some kind of metal wire in the middle with rope around it. Any help would be appreciated...I don't really want to give candles as gifts that give off that crazy smell after they put out the candle. Of course I realize that all candles have the "smoke" smell after you put them out....but this one was really really bad!!!! Shirley
