  • About You
My name is Janne Nielsen and I'm a 33 year old Danish girl living in London (UK). I love most types of arts & craft that I use to personalise my surroundings and presents for friends and family, but since discovering candlemaking some 5 yrs ago this has become my absolute favourite hobby (candle burning is an absolutely huge part of danish life and it's fantastic to finally make them to my own specification and quality!).

  1. Thanks for the information, that explains it all a bit better! The stearin I received last week was labelled palm oil stearin but the way it behaves/smells I think I'll shop around a bit for next time I need stearin :rolleyes2 . Janne
  2. I make my own mix of paraffin/stearin for my pillars and have always used the same supplier. Only the last order I did was with a different supplier and the stearin I received from them is different from what I'm used to. Does anyone know if there are several types of stearin?? The stearin I'm used to sets up quite "crackly" and the pillars I make with it does burn longer than if I didn't put it in. The pillars I've made with the newly received order seems to be quite a bit softer eventhough I've used the same recipes I always do including the max amount of micro.hard (which I normally don't even use). What is left over of the melted stearin is still sitting in the pot and it has set up looking like a layer of smooth ice crystals (does that make sense?! - I think i've seen candles on the gallery looking like it...) It looks very pretty but it's not the effect I need to create!! Finally, the whole kitchen reeks now and it never used to smell that strong before :lipsrseal. I wondered if the supplier have labelled it wrong or maybe there just are different types of stearin... Any help/info is greatly appreciated...:smiley2: Janne
  3. That's what I thought... But thanks for your answers!
  4. I've just came across a website that mentioned using a 1/2 a bamboo "trunk" which is sanded, stained and then filled with wax for container candles. I immediately got very excited as I have two turned wooden bowls which would look fantastic if used for container candles....only I'm very sceptical about the wood/candles mix... Has anyone got any knowledge on this topic or know if it is possible to make wooden bowls safe to use for containers? TIA J
